Lacan is very good in his original French, you're going to miss out a bit on his wit and puns if you settle for a translation. His work itself is also enlightening and he's excptionally well read. I suggest you familiarizing yourself with Freud, as stated above, is a VERY good idea.

from my experience the terrible caricature of freud most people have is actually much closer to what lacan was actually like
