That feel when you commit suicide because you know you haven't any talent.

>that feel when you think you have a revolutionary and radical idea in your field and a brilliant thesis to write and then you realize some guy did it 60 years before you and would kick your ass up and down the room in his old man breeches with his pipe still in his smug fucking mouth

If you've read enough, you'd see just how much writers copy each other. It's actually more noticeable in nonfictional settings, because its quite obvious how much peoples' ideas are never completely original.

Why hasn't Franzen committed suicide, then?

Franzen is too cool to commit suicide. Unless he wanted to join his friend Dave, but I don't think he does. He wants to live.

Franzen is actually pretty far from cool. He doesn't even reside on the same continent as cool.

Here's a question for you, /lit/, something I've been wondering and is relevant to this thread.

I heard of a guy -who I'm pretty sure was a writer- who left in his suicide note that he was "tired of all the buttoning and unbuttoning". He was talking about buttoning his shirt in the morning and unbuttoning it again in the evening, and all the relentless daily tasks of life.

I don't particularly agree, I think many treasures are hidden in daily survival. But I can't recall his name, and I'm not 100% sure he was a writer, but maybe....and I remember that thing about his note, definitely....
