Moon is a fine movie, but it's nowhere near the caliber of the movies on that list.

Well I'm sorry for contaminating this fine board with the plebeian filth of film.

I don't care what kind of movie you like. The OP asked for the Greatest science fiction films

Why no Star Wars/ Why no Star Trek IV The Voyage Home?

Because we've clearly strayed into sci-fi

>> No.2452716

How good is Solaris (1972)?

>> No.2452721

Robocop. very prescient and entertaining.

>>2452713
I have no idea what you mean to indicate by "because we've clearly strayed into sci-fi," but I assume you're joking, because Star Trek IV the Voyage Home is a pile of shitty nonsense.

I'd like to amend my list, though, to include Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

It was moody and strange. Ever see his Stalker? A bit easier to take imo.

Though I prefer his earlier film, Ivan's Childhood

I once watched a Harlan Ellison monologue about the differences he wanted people to see in the genre.
Serious works of science fiction vs mere "sci-fi" The shlock, or "a pile of shitty nonsense" as you label Star Trek IV to be.
Most people would lump ST with those schlocky Matrix films. (I like them both) Your likes and dislikes shouldn't subdivide more genres for the rest of us though. Why then you'd be no better than Margaret Atwood and her "speculative fiction"

Also. Who's going to mention Dune?

>> No.2452747

>>2452716
It's more of a psychological drama than a science fiction film. And it depends, if you liked other films from Tarkovsky then you'll probably like this one too.

Stalker is probably his best.

I mean Solaris is easier to take than Stalker. There is one scene where a character drives down a really long tunnel, seemingly nothing happening... Don't fast forward.

And I watched Ivan while a bit sleepy. So damn good.

Hackers was the best film of the 90s and you all know it.

Also, Stalker. Tarkovsky put long scenes like the railway scene (or the driving scene in Solaris) into his films to all of the idiots would leave the theatre.

Alphaville is, according to wikipedia, a sci-fi movie, although it's just sort of a weird noir with sci-fi elements.
Obligatory Metropolis reference.
Gattaca is a good one.
Alien 1 and 2 are pretty great.
American Astronaut by Cory McAbee is nowhere near any of these other movies, but it's fun.

Moon tells a story about how men handle isolation, surrealistic social situations, and how they deal with being betrayed - not only by the men behind the station, but also by the original Sam.

The fun thing with the sci-fi genre is it doesn't necessarily have to be futuristic, or even action/event oriented. Here's three for best sci-fi dealing with time travel. All three had incredibly coherent and tight plots and theories surrounding the sci-fi concept:

The Time Traveller's Wife
Los Cronocrimines (sp?)
Back to the Future Trilogy

Are you implying it's obscure or something? It's a good movie, won awards, and gets mentioned a lot online. Does not having Transformers 2 in my top 10 make me a hipster, too?
