Finally, here it is, fresh off the press!

TAR Issue #12!

http://www.theaprilreader.org/march2012.html

In this issue you'll be able to read about a farmer's persistant struggle with a rock, one young girl's upbringing with her mudwrestlermom in England and a story about a lovers kiss between two young girls.

We have also added a 10 dollar poetry prize. Be sure to read the winner poem by Maja Topic.

What's also new for this issue is the ability to donate money via Paypal. The April Reader guarantees that this money will only go toward increasing the prize pool for the Authors.

What is TAR?
The April Reader strives to inspire the members of the next generation of artists. This is what makes TAR serious about not only publishing, but also constantly improving what is released.
The April Reader is currently published on 4chan and Reddit.

Disaster averted! Once I saw the title, I knew it'd be OK and not "bloody, bloody Yank High Tea, bloody". Decent read. The author did a good job balancing what the reader sees versus what the kid does. Only significant gripe was the dialogue in the final scene was more clunky than jarring.

Also, mfw some of the lasses would probably try the vaginal claw, which is illegal.

I can see why it won. In many ways, it is a parable. In the middle of the story is the farmer who wants nothing more than to plant his field (work) but the enormous rock brings the religious folk and the students to the site, which hinder his working even more than the rock actually did.

There's a lot of significance in the photo the farmer saves toward the end: it's a kid enjoying the only ear of good corn he grew that year. In many respects, seeing that enjoyment is the farmer's religion and his scholarship. By covering up the rock he rids his farm of the only really "remarkable thing" about him, and everyone loses interest and goes away. He is not interested in mere fame, because he doesn't see it as work, and it doesn't satisfy him personally, because he doesn't see that he, himself, planted satisfaction on anyone's face--except for the photo.

It's a good story, mang.

Here is my opinion on why The Stone in the Field won.

It's really well-written. Every word has weight and thought. The author doesnt seem to have a single unnecessary word in there.

The story is fun, like rural folklore. It has a certain narrative style. You can almost hear the narrator talking to you.

Its formatted well and lends to a fast reading.
The prose is quite simple but yet descriptive.

You can see that someone have put hours of work into this text.

Window Recovery - 5/10, boring, plodding. Last two lines are good.

Unrequited Dualism - 8/10, knows its voice, good imagery, good sense of diction. Adore the 'when our cradle was cave' stanza.
Passing by a Churchyard - 6/10, obviously a poet who prefers romantics and their predecessors. Well-written, but doesn't how know to spell subtlety.

TAR posts notification of its releases on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, /lit/ and its website. Added to this is what was already mentioned: we post on the first of the month, every month, always.

We're not quiet lions about our releases, and while we're open to all suggestions, we editors generally adhere to the motto "work smarter, not harder." We'll discuss a possible mailing list, but having it in addition to all the aforementioned notifications seems a bit unnecessary, in my eyes.

A mailing list would be easy to make and could incorporate all published authors along with various interested persons. It would actually make mailing duties simpler rather than more difficult if used properly.

there goes my credibility. although i appreciate interpretation because it spawns (however deluded) meaning and helps to refine personal values; i find dichotomy to be an essential beast that is naked and capable of sustaining itself amidst the cruelest of tempestuous atmospheres. without a cloak for warmth, at that.. it's a struggle we come to surpass with each innovative utterance. i don't think the human is a coward, considering expression and vulnerability are inextricable. once an intention is released and left independent to fend against misunderstanding and (in most cases) repugnance, we are likely to abandon what we originally strove to defend. the *bravest* are those who remain faithfully concentrated despite criticism. the rest convince themselves that they are dead and pursue validation elsewhere. insecure thieves that leech their nourishment out of foreign soil, eventually coming to entirely despise their history.

Yes, we should. There have been a slight stop in communication due to Prole leaving. We will hopefully get back on track for the next issue.

Also I would not like to call it a rejection, rather that you did not get selected.

This time I felt that we had some quite good texts that didn't make it, Cue, Caricatures were two such texts of the top of my head.

Just because you did not make it, its necessarily doesnt mean your text is bad for that matter.

You think they're just overlooking all the great poems that they got and publishing the crap, right? That makes no fucking sense.

LOVE'S DROWSINESS STILL LASTS
A mix between play and prose. An existential discussion between a former professor and a kid?
Smoking in third dialogue line.
Mixture of french-english.
Arty fucking Rimbaud?
Cmon, this is high-brow wannabe shit. 3/10
Rather not see this published.

ROMANS 16:18
short piece about poverty.
Subtle reference (the title) to perhaps the financial crisis and a
questioning of faith? Godfearing people in food lines, while
big cats on wall street fill their bellys?
The text isn't too obvious which leave space for the readers own interpretation.
Author writes like the situation is a common happening, which in turn lends it self for a more believable setting. It might be.
Short length. 7/10
Definitely for TAR.

THE CURSE OF
MEDUSA
7/10 Good length, use of own language, nice similes and
methaphors.

Nonlinear structure but still manages to keep the reader in check.

The narrative stutter at some points.

The author apparently is an elementary teacher in Chicago I wonder if he actually have lived through this.

THE STONE IN
THE FIELD
Winner. The author has a clear line of thought from first to last line. Short sentences with vivid descriptions. A fun story and plot with minor twists - and in the end the question of the photo. The farmer is likeable as well as believable.

>> No.2457350

THE HEAT AND
THE DARK
A southern landscape where two girls walk from some kind
of religious ceremony? The sweaty night atmosphere is tangible. Simple yet delicate writing.
The dialogue feels alive and childish, inquiring and explorative, I guess its on purpose since the characters seem like kids.
Would like it to be included.
7/10

Concept behind Love's Drowsiness was a 'story' coming out of a shameless mess of references (as an awful lot of contemporary blogosphere fiction, ala Muumuu House, has become); hence the constant quoting of Rimbaud and Homer and the superficial allusions to the events of the Odyssey and the early life of the poet. A bit sloppy, but I certainly don't hold any sort of 'high-brow wannabe' mindset.

Feedback is appreciated regardless.

How is that?

>> No.2458691

So I've finally gotten around to reading this issue. First of all, I'd like to say thanks to TAR for bringing back the links in the table of contents. It makes browsing the issue a lot easier.

I thought The Stone in the Field was all right. The prose seemed pretty clumsy in the beginning, but it drew me in quickly and I didn't notice the prose again. I like the idea of the piece, and it was actually okay/good by non-TAR standards.

I think Love's Drowsiness could have beaten it, though. If only the author had done better on the blind man's section. That was some awkward as fuck dialogue.

>> No.2458703

>>2458691
More on the dialogue, actually. It was so bad because it was obviously the author putting his own words in the old man's mouth. They didn't belong there, and it ruined the character and the story he told.

>moar reading

>> No.2458732

>>2458703
But didn't you feel love's drowsiness was horribly melodramatic? It struck me as trying desperately to pose thematically to cover up for basically poor writing

>> No.2458746

>>2458732
I would definitely say that the old man's story was horribly melodramatic. Not so much the rest of it, though.

I just finished Medusa. There are parts that I like and parts that I don't. I feel ambivalent about it. The Medusa herself and all that was good, but the church scene didn't catch me as well as that. I don't much care for the way the neighborhood was written.

The quality in this issue is definitely pretty good. Nothing under a 5/10 so far.

>> No.2458765

The Heat and the Dark is my favorite so far. The writing doesn't take me out of the story and it was interesting and believable. And it didn't have that obviously-trying-to-say-something-deep aspect to it that a lot of the other pieces had. I liked it quite a bit.

Me Mam kind of bored me. But I felt sympathetic with the narrator and the prose wasn't bad. Still a solid piece, if a little too long.

Over all this was a good issue for prose. I'll read the poetry now, but I can't promise to comment on it.

>> No.2458899

The first thing I have to say about the poetry is that you should go back to having only one poem per page. It looks cluttered and the poems have no space to breathe. You never start a new story on the page the previous one ended on. Why do it with poetry? And why start now? I strongly believe it should be changed back.

TAR doesn't have the same kind of author/reader community as on /lit/. I'm not saying all of the people who read TAR are also the authors, but the core readership who built TAR up to what it is was. Very little advertising has been done on reddit, hence there are less submissions being sent hence there are less people interested in TAR.

My opinion is you might even have to start a separate reddit version of TAR, build it up to the point where it is good, and then merge it with TAR to form a larger conglomerate. It is very difficult to grab good authors if you don't have megabucks

I thought it was douchebaggery or jackwankery in its highest form. The flow was good then bad the faggy then herp derp. A poem needs to flow well or it's like taking a butt plug out too fast, or in too fast, either way a waterfall of hit is headed your way if you don't watch how you shove that butt plug in. Now the church yard poem though obvious and emo bitch misses his mom type deal it still flows the best and it doesn't have to try hard with its vocabulary to work.
