Death of the Author, /lit/. Thoughts?

Overreaching bullshit.

Suicide.

I'm cool with it, and agree to it with some point. There's merit to understanding a text both in a vacuum and in light of authorial and societal context. Personally, the first makes things more interesting.

Sometimes I read a book, and go
"Wow, what if I didn't know who this author was."
Like those quotes that are anonymous that would be ruined if you had any inside knowledge about the person who had said it.

>> No.2439887

would make a good name for a movie about a grad student who snaps and kidnaps the writer they're doing their dissertation on

>> No.2439889

Ehhh, too ideological in its presentation, for starters.
I agree with the overall point, but I don't think it's valid as an authoritative statement about criticism because in the end the essay itself is nihilistic about the presence of authority outside of a text. So at one and the same time it's denying the presence of an author while clearly being the work of an author who is arguing that his view is correct. Maybe that's a stupid way of looking at it, but it's what occurred to me over time when thinking about it.

You're absolutely right behemoth, it is a very stupid way of looking at it.

I majored in a social science in college. When I took English electives I mopped the floor with the English majors, because they don't have any actual knowledge and pretty much everyone learns how to analyze a text if they've taken any subject in the humanities or social sciences.

When History students took classes in my major as electives the same thing happened to us. Oh well, might not have been the highest rung on the ladder but at least I wasn't the lowest.

How does this ladder look, I wonder.

Give me ten more years of college I could probably figure it out. Not that that would be time well spent.

What Barthes is saying is
if you read a sentence in a book that said : "i like purple".
And the author says : " i never wrote "i like purple" in my book".

Who will you believe, the author or the text?
If you want the reign of the reader, you need the author (the one who's supposed to have the only authority on the book) to die.

Btw i'm french, my english is horrible.
