I was at a party a while back discussing book choices in a heated sort of way with this dicky guy. Out of nowhere he says 'What did you just go to the penguin classics section or something'

I can't stop thinking about it it's like I'm listening to only radio music rather than discovering the lesser known gems. Is this true with books? (What triggered his reaction were mentions of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky) I know I shouldn't care but I do

>> No.2436683

Lol that is some ultimate hipster shit right there. The penguin classics are too mainstream? Wtf lol.

>> No.2436685

Also OP, admit that Penguin publishes the nicest books to actually look at

If I were told that I could only own Penguin books I would probably be okay with it

>> No.2436692

Maybe you should be able to justify your choices for How Come Dosty and Tolsty Are So Good And Important To Read (Or HCDTASGAITR as we say in the trade).

Like did you even talk about Dosty's influence on 19th and 20th C philosophical thought? The mastery with which he deals with particular social and philosophical concepts?

You should be able to realize the significance of a great novel simply by reading it. Fyodor Mikhailovich and Lev Nikolaievich certainly manage to evoke that feeling.

I doubt OP's actually reading D&T directly. It's difficult to discuss that feel in a meaningful way when you're already removed from the work in question by a translator.

Hell no! Penguin classics have like the worst print, blank spots, varying thickness and faintness.

Everyman's Library are the best printers.

>> No.2436730

Obscurity does not mean quality but serious study or even serious appreciation for literature will eventually lead you to some obscure places...it's a process that you just have to be curious to endure...like if you read Dostoyevsky, why not try other Russian writers? Once you've moved away from Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy, the russian scene gets obscure relatively fast....the positive aspect in all this is intellectual curiosity, the desire to see what is over the next horizon...it's not always hipster elitism

I was saying it somewhat in jest, but it probably would have helped you. His French philosophers will be influenced one way or another by 19th Century Russian literature. Unless he's talking about real old philosophers, but I somehow doubt that.

There was a really good reading list for a lecture course, but can't find the bookmark. These are fairly good though for talking about the above:

If someone told me that Tolstoy and Dostoevsky were their favorite authors, I would be pretty suspicious. It's not that the well-known greats, like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky are bad, it's just that literature offers so much more and those two seem like a very default answer. Honestly, I'd be happier if the person named off writers that I hated, at least she would be taking a stand. I guess it is about obscurity to some extent.
