Not just diet, the vast majority of the book is about endurance running and the like, but there are segments talking about the effects of diet and nutrition in Christopher McDougall's Born to Run.

One of the early chapters in A Tale of Two Cities has a scene where a wine cask is dropped on a Paris street and the people go crazy drinking it off of the ground and whatnot. It's very descriptive.
