Wouldn't it be better if everyone on the planet just learned one language from birth?

Sure, you could have your pet linga franca in your homecountry, but I think it would make for a more free and connected world if everyone learned English from birth.

Because most non-english speaking businessmen must learn it.

English is the #1 language for business transactions and well as most international politics. It is the dominant language even if some have more speakers.

I chose english because the most powerful nation on earth speaks english and because of the pervasiveness of the english language in other cultures (like new technologies, brand-names etc).

Also because of English's uniquely diverse origins and history, which lead it to have the largest vocabulary (i think somewhere over a million words now, according to Google).

If you can think of a better language I'm all ears. I just don't think artificial languages like Esperanto can work in this way.

We are entering the era of the global society, tackling global problems; climate change, space exploration, dwindling fuel resources, global terrorism, serious technological progression, more and more interconnected economies, people can communicate/entertain/inform instantly from across the world etc.

I think the time is coming for a global language, but whether it establishes itself or not is a different story.

Personally I hope it will, and if it does English will become a far richer language for it.

>> No.2412521

The phonetic structure of English is totally bullshit, didn't you know?

It is also the international language for science. I found it funny that they were using it very liberally at the trilateral Iran-Afghanistan-Pakistan summit. In other words, you forget diplomacy.

Also, English is the most spoken language in the world. Those statistics for most-spoken language you're looking at don't count second languages as part of the statistic. If you could first, second and third languages, English is the most spoken language in the world and it still grows every year.

I'm not American, I've never set foot in the United States, but it's an objective fact that the US has the world's largest economy.

I know you love hating America, don't jump so spontaneously to voice your cheap, smirking opinions on America/Americans/Capitalism.

I do this all the time, and retards like you undermine my position and the debate itself.

Don't get your panties in a twist.
I live in the US and happen to like it but even you have to admit that tagging it "the most powerful country on earth" in 2012 and thus making it the basis of your argument about having english as the only language is a bit retarded.

it's not the basis, it forms part of the basis which includes several points. Read it again, baby.

And economically, culturally (and arguably politically) America still has the loudest voice in the world. Also, the most common language in the EU is English too.

I know people are going to call me a crass imperialist, but the need for a global language increases everyday and I think English, since the failure of Esperanto, has the most convincing argument.

spelling is completely different from the other 'rules' of a language, since spelling is a social construct whereas the rules are based on biological parameters.

that said, most spelling systems that i'm aware of follow regular spelling-to-sound correspondences; french and spanish are two examples. i've heard that Serbo-Croatian is also this way.
