yesterday i went to /soc/ and asked them to read poetry for me.

welcome is everything remotely lit-related (and nearly everything is lit-related)! feel free to request or publish your own ideas, read or quote stuff, sing or just express your thoughts.

>> No.2402831

might have gone wrong because i asked them to read german poetry, but might as well be caused by them being busy rubbing their genitalia, so i figured out this might be a better place for this kind of stuff. lets see if it works!

not waving but drowning - stevie smith

>> No.2402923

>>2402917

sounds like there is an airstream near your microphone, its almost as loud as your voice, so difficult to understand.

this is the text:

Stevie Smith - Not Waving But Drowning

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

i guess you are a native french speaker. even with the translation its hard for me to figure it out.. why did you choose this one?

>> No.2402934

>>2402929
Not native but nearly so. I wanted to read something by Beckett because I am a fan of his and I know he translated most of his works himself, though I had never read this poem in particular before tonight. I read it once in my head and enjoyed it immediately.

[German] Der Mensch

Matthias Claudius

Empfangen und genähret
Vom Weibe wunderbar,
Kömmt er und sieht und höret
Und nimmt des Trugs nicht wahr;

Gelüstet und begehret
Und bringt sein Tränlein dar;
Verachtet und verehret,
Hat Freude und Gefahr;
Glaubt, zweifelt, wähnt und lehret,
Hält nichts und alles wahr;
Erbauet und zerstöret
Und quält sich immerdar;
Schläft, wachet, wächst und zehret;
Trägt braun und graues Haar.
Und alles dieses währet,
Wenns hoch kommt achtzig Jahr.
Dann legt er sich zu seinen Vätern nieder,
Und er kömmt nimmer wieder.

My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.

could somebody do this one? It's Wordsworth.

dulce et decorum est -wilfred owen

http://vocaroo.com/i/s01xOZplfKKn

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime . . .
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, –
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

Rose has a great taste in books anyway, judging by one of the comments in her video.
