Well maybe because someone who deals with being gay also realises some of the other fucked up mental barriers that are common today in western society in the process of "accepting" being gay. Intelligence is not a fix "amount" or such a thing.
While most gays are nearly "forced" to overthink many things "normal" people aren't, being gay isn't making you brighter but being normal gives you the possibility to accept everything the way it is without a reason to think about it. As I said it just gives you the possibility, most people however don't use it, or at least I hope that most people don't use it.
