23944414 No.23944414 [Reply] [Original]

So my parents gifted me his book 12 rules for a life.

I’ve read it and it was a mid self-improvement book.

I didn’t who this Jordan Peterson was.

I’ve search him on YTB and Reddit and either people hate him because his a fascist masculiniste, only says basic things and his a hypocrite or people cite him as a anti-woke intellectual (not the same as the alpha/sigma cult) who tells the true liberal won’t hear plus he’s a doctor in psychology so he has a sort of legitimacy when he talks about human behavior.

Of course it isn’t black and white ie there’s nuances.

Now I come to /lit/ to see your opinions on his book and his person.

PS : Apparently there is a sequel to his 12 rules for a life. If you’ve read it would you recommend me or his just intellectual masturbation.

He didn't become famous for the book (it's a shit book anyway). He became famous for debating some midwit leftists and using his experience in clinical psychology to debunk some of the more retarded woke talking points - like how gender is a social construct, or how social power dynamics are an artificial system that can be dismantled etc. He had some really good points there.

Unfortunately he then became embroiled in the far-right daddy replacement grift, started talking about shit he has NO idea about like environmental issues and theology, and got hooked on benzos. Lost all his credibility with anyone with an IQ over 90.

Basically his self-improvement shit can be boiled down to "take responsibility for yourself, and then for others and you will live a fulfilling and rewarding life". It's a no-duh kind of statement but one that needs to be made nonetheless

His views on trans people are materialist which is at total odds with his views regarding religion. If you're willing to fixate on cultural narratives regarding Biblical events and the concept of a hyper-reality, as in his debate with Dawkins, then you should bring the same kind of philosophical machinery alongside when it comes to other issues too. If the narrative of an Exodus takes on a kind of truth because of intersubjective agreement and its diffusion throughout culture, then so does the trans narrative of "being born in the wrong body".

>>23944414
See above. The problem is that JP is duplicitous. He completely switches his philosophical camp when going from offensive to defensive positions.

This video also covers some of his more recent behavior.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qroZWO5aQEM

I'm sympathetic to people to who are recently exposed to JP. He does seem very intelligent and thoughtful, because he is, but only selectively. Once you monitor him for a while, you start to see inconsistencies that don't reflect ignorance but reflect something more sinister.

People aren't against the concept of "cleaning your room", for one example. They're against the concept that getting your house in order should be some kind of mandatory prerequisite for changing things beyond your immediate environment. Defenders like to downplay JP here but his earlier interviews show where he's coming from. From his BigThink interview:
>"If you can’t even clean up your own room, who the hell are you to give advice to the world?"
>"My sense is that if you want to change the world, you start with yourself and work outward because you build your competence that way. I don’t know how you can go out and protest the structure of the entire economic system if you can’t keep your room organized."
The obvious counterargument is that there may be forces outside one's room that make cleaning it very difficult. Alternatively, that cleaning it might involve participation in a system that a person is morally or religiously opposed to. JP's argument totally lacks nuance because he's trying to delegitimize political organization among the youth who he sees as radical.

He also spent years rallying against postmodernism or postmodern neo-Marxism (which is always loosely defined, in stark contrast to the man who wants every single term defined perfectly regarding religious discussion), yet now believes in the notion of constructed truth, hyperreality, and seems to feel these are as important as physical truths. Like wtf JP?

It's because he's pretentious and insincere.
He doesn't want (You) to have a better life and he doesn't want people to believe in God like people imagine him to. And if he did he wouldn't be paraded around by the dinosaur media. He doesn't even believe in God himself. He wants people to support wars for his own financial gain so he can do abuse anxiety medications, steers people to humanistic justifications for spiritual concerns, and has intense meltdowns over people he claims to pity rather than being gentle with them.
All of this to say none of his advice should matter to you at all. Get your truth from a good tree. All of Peterson's fruit is clearly bad.

It wasn't necessarily that he was popular that drew me to him originally. It was that he was one of the few who were actually interested in talking about or helping men. And not from the current zeitgeist of knuckling-dragging sub-human alpha/beta-meme Andrew-Tate auto-fellatio machoism incel culture war crap. In the beginning it seemed like he actually wanted to help men. Especially when he would break down in tears, saying he got a thank you or letter about how his insights helped some random guy. I think there is an extremely overlooked problem in society right now with regards to men and their issues. In that, any issues is outright ignored, silenced, humiliated, or told to be stoic and shut-up. He was slowly pushing in that direction of recognizing men's issues and problems. Then, I believe he got shamed away from it, be it from family, or outside influence, and he started skewing towards women's issues and the empathy changed towards them and away from men. Telling men to just to "man up" essentially and "take responsibility" despite the overlook of societal problems of men falling behind in almost every metric, financially, educationally, health-wise and suicidality and mental health. As well as medication abuse, which JP fell into himself, but that insight is lost on him because he became a rich little shit and he got his now, so fuck everyone else. But no, gotta change the spotlight and baby women again because, something, something patriarchy, men have all the power in modern society, especially the average man. (Which they don't)

>> No.23946161

JP’s early lectures and his first book helped me get my life back on track when it was all fucked up. Sometimes you need simple advice like “stand up straight” and “take responsibility for your actions” It sounds simple and obvious but there are times when you need to hear it and if you’re not fortunate enough to have family or friends who can provide that, it’s good that it comes from somewhere. His ability to put together the great thinkers of the past’s thoughts and ideas and put them in a way that’s easy to understand and implement was invaluable to me.

However, after he got hooked on benzos and his daughter had free rein over him, everything he’s put out since have been shallow, reprehensible cash grabs and he’s reduced himself to a charlatan. If you watch his content, almost everything prior to ~2020 has something you can grab from it and use in your life that will improve it. He should have retired from the public eye after he got clean but mikhaelas whorish, attention seeking behavior and his own want for money pushed him to milk his followers constantly.

Peterson will touch a nerve by simply pointing out something that is blatantly ignored in the way an ideological group frames an issue. He exposes ideological blind spots in a simple and straightforward way; this leads to the fellow travelers of whichever idea is being discussed having a breakdown and exposing themselves. He's valuable as a media personality if even for that reason alone.

>Peterson: it would be productive to involve men in the conversation about violence against women in a way that doesn't label masculinity as inherently negative
>Libtard: so you're saying in order to make men care about rape women have to be returned to the status of men's property
>Peterson: the rise of identitarianism is linked to reactionary politics that sublimate personal resentment into collectivistic extremism
>Chud: so you're saying white people don't have group interests and therefore shouldn't exist
>Peterson: transgender ideology specifically targets a group of people likely to be confused and open to mental pathologies via social contagion--we shouldn't give hormones to children let alone surgically mutilate minors
>Tranny: so you're literal nazi saying we're a disease and we should be exterminated like one
>Peterson: anonymity increases the likelihood of pathological behavior so perhaps one way to alleviate the negative repercussions of its overall influence would be to segregate accounts on these specific widely used social media websites--it's definitely better than secret and selective control of the public narrative as it exists now

Boomers trying to retool Jungianism into self-help programs all keep making the same mistake. Despite all Jung's idiosyncrasies, he was a trained psychiatrist, an actual medical doctor. He didn't have a degree in Liberal Arts word salad like Peterson, and guys like him that came before: James Hollis, Robert Moore and etc who used Jung's works to sell their self-help books. That means they keep misreading him on a conceptual level, like with Jungian archetypes, which are analytical tools, and not behavioral templates YOU are required to emulate to “sort your life out”.

Peterson took a doctor prescribed medication. At the time it was being handed out like candy for pretty much anything because it was seen as harmless (you can easily find celebrities on late night talk shows joking about taking them). It is now rarely prescribed due to the fact it creates physical dependancy even at low doses over short periods of time and causes extreme withdrawal symptoms (up to and including death). Having an adverse reaction to a prescribed drug doesn't make someone a drug addict. There is no evidence he abused the medication (i.e. his experience became so common that the drug is hardly prescribed now).

When he initially sought treatment in Canada they wanted to give him SSRIs and misdiagnosed him. He took the initiative to research treatment options and went to Russia where a programme specifically developed for medication withdraw was available.

Immediately after his treatment he finished and published his second worldwide bestselling book. Within months he had organized and gone on an international lecture tour. He also published multiple articles and made some media appearances. He has also set up an accredited online university that will offer free degrees, organized a think tank to combat the hegemony of shit like the WEF, created an online interview series with hundreds of episodes etc...

The narrative that there was a character defining downward spiral into drug addiction is doesn't bare up to reality. I'm honestly embaressed so many people have been holding onto it for half a decade now. Imagine being so pathetically delusional that you parrot the same easily disproved ad homs in an autistic echo chamber for years on end thinking they land; in that time Peterson has gone on to much success.

Jordan Peterson's concern is that the advance of the more radical progressive left, with things like wokeism, critical race theory, feminism, etc., will make normal white men (normal is not gay) seek collectivist and tribalist ideologies as a form of self-defense. He particularly fears the consequences for minorities such as Jews.
To try to avoid this, he acts on two fronts. The first is to combat the most extreme forms of this insane progressivism. The second is by placating normal white men with individualistic ideas, because he is terrified that these young people will begin to discover the power of tribalism.

>> No.23947857

"Wokeism" (which I would like to add is poorly by defined) and Critical theory aren't radical leftism, they are almost entitely driven by Corporate/Academic interest and is almost entirely unrelated to Marxist sentiments contrary to Peterson's characterizations.

Again, watch Zizek's debate with Peterson (or better yet just read Zizek).

>He is terrified that these young people will begin to discove the power of tribalism

Yes, yes, but all of this occurred in his Sequel Arc. The original Peterson was a mostly endearing and sincere character (and he hadn't yet sold out). Then he had his benzo breakdown in 2020 and came back from that somewhat broken. The deal he signed with the Devil (Ben Shapiro) in 2022 only made things worse.

Intellectually Peterson was always a very stimulating guy, but the new Peterson is boring, shallow and predictable, which is best illustrated by his bizarre fixation starting a couple of years ago on "troll-demons" and viewing literally every single psychological phenomenon through the frame of Big Five personality traits.

Peterson is a dork who's morbidly afraid of women and doesn't really know how to behave/project masculinity around them, if you can read between the lines it's all over his books.

He was simping for his wife in highschool, but she rejected him and only settled for him years later when she was 29 after a string of other relationships, while Peterson was working hard to become a tenured academic and patiently waited around for her in the friendzone. As for his daughter, it's obvious they have some sort of very unhealthy quasi-incestuous dynamic going on, which was laid bare in particular during his benzo-coma saga — when he was wasting away while she became this outwardly sexualized Instagram influencer turbowhore with an eye on his estate. It was like a Dorian Gray/portrait story unfolding IRL.

All in all, it's very clear that Peterson is not in control of women in his life and family. Considering this, I really can't imagine how anyone could take any sort of life advice from him, especially on how a man is supposed to act.

You are just reiterating what I already said. You are so incensed by this nonsense that you failed to even attempt to sincerely comprehend what I wrote and assumed that I automatically disagree with you (I don't). This is, in large, part of why I can't stand Peterson. He teaches very impressionable people to, instead of genuinely engaging with the philosophy they oppose, act like a
bitter ans obstinate dickhead constantly scanning his peers for enemies amd who refuses to acknowledge even a modicum of nuance.
>firmly rooted in critical theory
The projects of someone like Adorno, Foucault, (or even fucking Debord who is a genuine Marxist) have quite lierally nothing to do with the bluehaired identity politics pushers. In fact if you actually read them (these Postmodern-Neo-Marxists as you would call them) you will find that they, explicitly through their own theories, do infact disagree at large with this sort of behavior. (Again, watch the debate with Zizek. Pererson flat out admits that he hasn't read Marx or any of the "PostModernists").
>Marxism
Like Peterson, you haven't read or sincerely engaged with Marx at all. In fact, I would dare say that you don't actually even know what Marxism is. The philosophical theory and lineage of Marx is much more complex and nuanced (and splintered) than the sort neutered and hyper commercialized "fight the power man, topple the system" Meme-Socialism you see peddled around mainstream sources. The "Woke" have no cohesive ideology (or aim of systemic change) it's just a vague conceptual buzzword that could be applied to anything.
>Zizek is completely irrelevant to the legacy of Marxism in american academia and popular culture.
He is quite literally one of the most influential mainstream philosophers of at least the last 20 years.

Well for one, Peterson was asked to extrapolate a bit and clarify his stance but instead gave an entirely nebulous answer with no further elaboration.

While a religion can be predicated on both axioms and presumptions, Peterson's vague definition almost entirely ignores the inherently communal nature of religion. You could apply his definition to any sort of adherent to Metaphysics. Having faith or belief in Axioms does not necessarily directly correlate to being a religious adherent.

His entire work/thesis relies on shifting definitions and abnormal interpretations of otherwise commonly understood terms to be viable. When Peterson is talking about "God", "truth", "religion" he's not using these words and terms as they're expected to be by his immediate audience or anyone listening in from the outside. Then when someone does finally pick up on this, and asks to clarify, Peterson deflects so that his worldview cannot be made as an argument and so that he can always claim to be taken out of context when criticized

Direction brain politics has caused people to view postmodernism as innately leftist when it exists outside such dichotomies. In fact, once you abandon the importance of an underlying objective reality, then you can create the most maximally hierarchical system ontologically possible, if you desire. You can of course create the most incredibly flat system, too. All these things are possible once you open your eyes to the full breadth of the plane of potentiality. The characteristic nature of postmodernism is that it exists as a philosophy of rebellion against centralized power structures, as these structures always seek to redefine objective reality in their own way, establishing institutions devoted to their legitimization. Right-wingers, now that they're outside the mainstream political center, find themselves making identical critiques to postmodernists.
