Except there was a lot more going on in the book, and the characterization of Holden is very complex. For example Holden is dishonest about his emotions and does not admit them to himself or the reader. When something makes him sad or upset he will say "that BORED me," or "I just didn't feel like it," exactly like, you know, a teenage boy.
It's a pretty accurate and touching account of not-yet-grown-up psychology, but it also shows that hypocritical behavior of the adult world. Holden hates everything, but this does not refute all of his observations he makes.

The main issue that most people who didn't like Catcher in the Rye had is that they couldn't relate to Holden Caulfield. That's okay. When I first read it, I didn't like it either, although I recognized some of the stylistic elements that distinguish it and understood why it was a great book -- but I couldn't stand it.
Then I read it again a few years later. I loved it. I absolutely adored it. It's one of my favorite books by far.
You can't just read the book and like it, you have to feel like it.
