In terms of the book, it's because pleasure numbs-your mind and makes you worship Crystalman, who insulated the light of muspel with a thick layer of pain precisely so you would not seek it out.

Following pleasure is easy. You are, in fact, probably dependent upon it. When you seek pleasure, you are just mindlessly following the Will.

The book itself alludes to the problem with pure pleasure. Crystalman's forest in the second to last scene of the book is pretty and comfy but above all it is completely sterile and motionless besides trees and water, there are no bugs there which Maskull encountered so frequently earlier in the book. And of course Applain is so enchanting and beautiful that Maskull loses his sense of self-worth in its sight.

Yes. The world is waiting for my dissertation on how David Goggins and Nyanamoli Thero embody the themes of this book.

All pain and pleasure are two sides of the same coin of a meaningless chasing after the wind. in the face of duty. To seek out pain for the sake of pain -- or pleasure for the sake of pleasure -- is NOT the way.

There is no why. Hedonism is plainly wrong and refuted by every philosophy/religion that came after it.

*gets his head smashed in*
Lindsay leaves it open whether Spadevil's face would have contorted into the crystalman grin. Also, his main gist is that the men of Sant gain pleasure by denying pleasure.

You cannot help but suffer pain when you actively seek for something as painful as the light of Muspel.
