The attachment to wealth is a huge temptation and stumbling block to faith for those who don't use it for it's proper purpose. There are kings, emperors, and princes who a canonized saints. Even Joseph of Arimathea was a rich man and a member of the Sanhedrin. He risked his position and reputation by asking Pontius Pilate for Jesus' body and laying the body of our Saviour in his own tomb.

His words are not stupid. His words give life, hope, comfort, and salvation. "Heaven and Earth shall pass away, but My words shall never pass away." [Matthew 24:35] Even with your extreme example there are saints who lived like that too. There are saints who are called Fools-for-Christ, who lived lives of total poverty, homelessness, and secretly had pious lives, but feigned insanity to hide their spiritual gifts God gave them. A contemporary example is St. Gabriel of Georgia. Another not so modern example is Saint Xenia of St. Petersburg.

Intelligence and materialism are not the same thing. Education is not required to inherit wealth or do immoral things for money, let alone intelligence. Working people, not rich people, are molded to think that the purpose of their intelligence is to serve the state or enrich your employer, the business owning rich people.

People born into unencumbered property and income-producing assets never need to work or seek work, often inherit businesses that employ large amounts of people and also run for political office.
