It is well known that at best, author will peaked in the first novel, some are in the second, and rarely in the third, which gives a notion that trilogy is publisher talmudic tactic for moneymaking because of how forced they are

Continuing my journey through the Forgotten Realms books. Just started reading Shadowdale in the Avatars series. It's grim bros. I'm not even half way in and I've totally tuned out. Some of these FR books are so fucking bad I sometimes wonder how FR took off like it did. The Drizzt stuff and Finders stone were both really good, but everything else has been pretty bad so far. At least you can usually tell which ones are going to be bad pretty quickly so I can just chuck the shit ones on audiobook while I grind in games.

I'm happy with a fun adventure with decent characters. Lots of these books have atrocious character writing. They don't have to be deep but they need at least some personality. Finders stone had good characters, I could imagine them in my head easily. Alias, Olive Ruskettle, Akabar, Dragonbait, Giogioni Wyvernspur. All great characters. The characters in Shadowdale aren't even introduced we are just dropped into their bodies and expected to care about them.

23854432

Just finished The Pariah and like I said last week I will write my review of it (including dei aspect) and you WILL read my effortpost (1/2)
>
The entire book theme was literally displayed on the title: a pariah, outcast, someone that didn't belong in society and the story revolves around that theme which lead to protagonist loneliness, alineation, etc, and throughout his journey, protagonist met bunch of people who present themselves as a father figure, mother figure, young sister/older brother sibling-type figure, a friend and mentor.
That's an enjoyable part indeed, taking a different approach for fantastical novel which hooked the reader greatly for its plot point alone, sadly it was also the one that probably filtering most of the reader once the theme was slowly retreated to the background and eventually leaving the protagonist purposeless in his journey, up until some time later he caught up with his own fate or destiny, that has something to do with prophecy, and love.
I bought this book in used condition, and after 300 pages or so, after the protagonist, Alwyn, escaped the pit mine and joining the covenant army, the book itself felt like a brand new, as if the previous owner dropped it midway, never flipped the rest, and decided to sell it instead. I can see why, because I myself got bored after the protagonist reached the 'enlightenment' phase and joining this schizo lady with vision of scourge (basically somekind of apocalyptic event). Speaking of schizoid, the protagonist was also schizoid to a certain degree where he listened to voices talking to him during some critical events throughout the novel, that's another plus point for me.
Regarding the protagonist, I have a love-hate relationship with this guy. Alwyn is a simp. At first he present himself as intellectual, a thinking man, observant, and cautious, but as the story progressed and he met this strong female captain soldier woman called evadine, he began to simp for her (but still act cold to her like a chud) to the point where it will be tiring for the reader whenever the scene of him with evadine was presented in the book, but knowing that every single character was somewhat share the same opinion of Alwyn stupidity, I believe that his decline of character is important for the plot so I'll hold this one.
What else? I dont like to talk about plot that much so lets get back to the theme and worldbuilding.
The pariah is a low fantasy, which mean the worldbuilding is not going to be something big or ambitious or too fantastical, you can pretty much visualizing a medieval age setting for this with a theme revolving around religion, culture, beliefs, etc. It did btw, since in book religion plays an important lore in this story, HOWEVER, I naturally wished that it would ascend to theological discussion (especially with a more intimate first person perspective), but it doesnt, sadly, and instead it shifted to military fantasy for the rest of the series

>> No.23854437

>>23854432
>2/2
Evendoe the worldbuild was tight and fairly small, it was a messed up one, bunch of small thing that nobody would bother to remember was thrown throughout 500 pages of this book, I would advise to dont bother paying attention until the puzzle solve itself later in the story.
The prose was surprisingly good, something that I wouldn't expect from a first person fantasy novel in current day. The fighting scene was described really well and evocative, cant say the same for the inconsistent flow and pacing. Also there's bunch of usage of foreboding without rewarding outcome, That's for technical review
My verdict for The Pariah would be 3/5. Its good at some point, enjoyable, but the shifting theme would probably caused a disturbance for its reader. I prefer if this novel taking a path of alwyn playing assassin creed, hunting down some people who are responsible for the downfall of his outlaw band and father figure death, or looking for treasure before joining the military afterwards. But of course nothing happened.
>So how about the DEI aspect in this novel, anon? This novel was released in 2021, there's no way its DEI free right
Yep, there's DEI in this novel, most likely on the 'E' one.
Author preserve women soo much in here, that he lends a hand to save a one specific woman from Alwyn blade (who was also one of his own target) because he couldn't endure a single woman die in a horrible way in his novel.
I usually have a softer side for things like this, for it is a fantasy, a make believe thing. But I would get irritated once it was so obvious that it was there, attached itself in the story.
The treatment of women in this novel was somewhat ridiculous, they often presented as a victim but never enemies, even like I said, the long time nemesis of protagonist suddenly a victim as well (also pregnant, as cherry on top) despite half of this novel filled with his scheming on how to kill her, the traitor. A single chapter shorten that things out that makes protagonist softening himself and decided to not hunt her again.
There's a scene where a girl named Ayin wants to get roiped by a chud whose name I forget but he was also on protagonist killing list, and singlehandedly, Ayin cut his balls off and sometime later the strong captain woman evadine hugged her calling her sister for doing brave and powerful thing like that, I shed my tears in that scene
Well yeah, even the entire figure of evadine herself was taking the big portion of DEI aspect in this novel, and then there's also this gay knight who become alwyn mentor, apparently his father (a king) didn't care if his son is a faggot but he despise him for being a faggot to a commoner. Powerful isnt it?
That's for my review. I'm currently ordering shadow and claw for my next fantasy reading, I dont know if I should read the sequel: The Martyr, and apparently author newest, upcoming novel is in the same universe as this one? I'll wait for fellow anon review instead, that's all

I've yet to find a pastiche that really captures the spirit of the originals, despite how formulaic—and thus presumably easy to imitate—they can be. A typical Howard story is cringy as fuck in a lot of ways but it's delivered with such earnestness and conviction that the cringiness is somehow transmuted to awesomeness. Howard really believed in Conan(and Kane, and the rest) on some level. His characters stood for something deeply meaningful to a very troubled young writer, and this quality exists in a strange yet brilliant symbiosis with the pulpy subject matter of the individual stories. The pastiches can't replicate that.

>> No.23854558

>>23854549
I liked a few of them over the years. Reread Emerald Lotus when it got a rerelease and it was pretty solid. But Howard just had a way with prose you can't replicate. Conan's not just some buff dude fighting monsters and fucking harlots. The way REH composed the stories is almost song like.

Then there is Villain's Code, which has likeable characters but is otherwise the sloppiest sloppy slop imaginable and is written at a weirdly juvenile reading level(though not nearly as bad as that Kaiju Preservation Society excerpt posted earlier). If these recommendations sound lukewarm, well, capeshit just doesn't seem to have much going on when it comes to actual books for original properties.

I read Nature of predators and I really liked the premise even if the execution was fairly bad. It's about mankind finding other sentient life but they're all evolved from prey animal, so mankind's predator characteristics and omnivory makes the aliens scared of us (at first). Then I was told that if I liked that I should look at Deathworlders. I also liked that premise a lot. It sort of makes us into kryptonians, with our world being very inhospitable compared to other sentient cradle worlds, so we're smaller and a lot stronger than they are. The prose, however, was very poor and the plot wasn't all that well planned.

Would you know anything along these lines? I like the ideas of multiple alien species and how humanity would interact and possibly integrate with them, especially these that have a twist on mankind being just "normal" or "average". Like some default user class in a game. I like the idea that mankind is special somehow. Any recs appreciated.

Hi all, /wg/ native here. I'd like to shill my recently-released scifi technothriller for a moment because I'm incredibly proud of what I accomplish in terms of plot, the twist, and world building. Here's the dust jacket:
>The cataclysmic event known as the "Deathfall" happened with little warning before drowning Earth and leaving Humanity on the brink of extinction. Those that survived turned to self-augmentation and mechanization in order to reclaim that which was lost under the dark waves. Humanity found a new foothold, and with it new dangers.

>Arivia is a twenty-something user of a cyborg frame. Her life is simple, safe, and fulfilling. At least, until one fateful job sees Arivia's entire world turned upside-down and herself thrust into a harrowing journey into the deep to discover the truth behind the Deathfall.

I'm more than happy to send out teaser or even full PDF copies if you can't afford/don't want to buy anything. Just email me (michael.d.cinder AT gmail) and I'll set you up!

I suggest not using the verb "shill" even ironically on 4chan as it makes your work look unserious and you insecure. I think it's better to come off overconfident than unprofessional/unassertive which is the aura you give off when you say you're "shilling" your book. Why do you need to "shill" it? Can't you just promote/advertise it like every other respectable author?

Also, I know that Amazon allows you to add a sample chapter that anyone can access. I suggest doing that so you can simply share the link and we don't need to email you, as most of us won't bother. We might bother to click an Amazon link though.

Whichever one of you dorks recommended this trilogy could have warned me what a chore it is to read. I enjoyed BotNS, so the idea of a megalopolis locked into history and traditions so old no one understands why anything is the way it is, really appealed to me. Fuck though, I'm almost done the first book and it has yet to "grab" me. The prose is nice, the very British witticisms are cute, but the dialogue, oh my heart, the dialogue. Prunesquallor and Steerpike are the only characters whose lines aren't nails on a chalkboard. I understand it's a creative decision. Picasso made his paintings look like they do on purpose, doesn't mean it's not gobbledygook.

I understand Peake was a poet and artist besides a novelist, but he will spend ten paragraphs describing a view from a window and it's... pretty, I guess. Maybe I'm just a brainlet, am I missing something? I don't drop series often, but I don't think it's worth reading two more of these.

Ive finished Crossroads of Twilight. Currently on New Spring. My ratings so far out of 5 (2.5/5 is ok, 3 is good, 2 is bad etc):
Eye of the World: 2
The Great Hunt: 3
The Dragon Reborn: 2.5
The Shadow Rising: 3.5 (I absolutely loved the flashback and still think about it often)
Fires of Heaven: 3
Lord of Chaos: 2.5
A Crown of Swords: 2.5
The Path of Daggers: 2.5
Winters Heart: 1.5
Crossroads of Twilight: 1
I’m too committed to stop now. I really like some characters, but I feel like all the female characters are a different variation of one person and it drives me insane. I just hope the end is worth it, because I do like this series, even if it’s really slow. It feels like all the books are edging my mental cock towards the massive orgasm that is supposed to be the last battle. In "Demon in White," the third book in the "Suneater" series, humanity lives tens of thousands of year in the future. The current empire formed after it waged war, know as the Foundation War, with the Mericanii, a civilization of human-fused machines.

Turns out the Mericanii was the former United States. The last president was Julian (((Felsenburgh))), a business man who promised cures to "injustice and inequality" using artificial intelligence. His planned work, and he got rich. After his death, however, the machines seized power and enslaved humanity.

After the war, humanity removed all Mericanii knowledge and technology from the societal psyche. Any mention of its history or use of its technology is a capital offense.

tl;dr: America's last president was a Jew businesman whose artifical intelligence led to the decimation of Earth and removal of the United States from history.

Well that was a fun read. I’m glad he’s back to making comfy time-travel isekai instead of post-apocalyptic slop. Although the author is a libtard with a hate-boner for Germans (he’s been hanging out with Harry Turtledove I guess), his portrayal of modern-day people interacting and culture-clashing with ancients is top-notch. Although it has the usual Stirling problems like flawless main-characters and gratuitous plot armor, I’ll devour an alt-history novel set in the Roman Empire any day.

>In an isolated valley stands the lone Mount Niatas, worshipped by the people as a god. Faith and stability are tested when Niatas comes under an assault of quakes that shatter its skin and crack it down the centre, their cause unknown. A druid and a blacksmith guide a mighty Goliath to the peak where with chains and divine strength he holds the two sides of the god-mountain together. Yet the solution is temporary, and the tremors continue. A quest to dispel the evil within - whatever it may be - begins.

I'm not NOT interested but some parts are vague or poorly expressed. Is the Goliath going on the adventure? What's the heroes real objective? What is actually so bad about the mountain splitting apart? Is there something bad in their threatening to come lose? Is their conflict on either side? Perhaps a cold war esque tension that leads each side to blame and fear the other? Is this kind of thing happening anywhere else? What is the hero's personal stake in all this? Beyond the giant holding the mountain together it's not really a story so much as it's a .... blurb.

I didn't really care about the rape (even if it felt like it came out of the blue)
I dropped it because the prose was unbearably bad and it just seemed to devolve into generic fantasy with literal elves and shit after the promising start.
Is there a point where he learns to write and it becomes actually good?

>are there any notable series with a driven, ambitious protag rising through military/leadership ranks
I haven't even read them but aren't the Honor Harrington series supposed to be exactly that?
I also remember Piers Anthony's Space Tyrant though it had less of a military focus.

There's nothing scientific about FTL, it's one of the least plausible tropes of sci-fi.
>boring
You don't have to find it interesting for it to be a fantasy.

I was talking about sci-fi military wank à la Warhammer.

Nta, but warhammer does have good military science fiction/fantasy(?) ranging from the bad to good. Ciaphas Cain and Gaunts Ghosts are generally quite above average

>Do you think Kellhus was a virgin before he went to the Three Seas?
No. He was selectef to be a Father and fathered Koringhus.
>Do you think Dunyain have non-procreative sex just so they can learn to suppress the unique carnal pleasure it provides?
No. Well, maybe. The Whale Mothers are always available.
One scary thing to realize is that the Whale Mothers must have been selected for their intellect as well as their fertility. So they were conscious and aware of their role as rape-hog axolotl tanks all along.

ESL here. Do you need to be white and a native speaker to enjoy Sanderson's Way of Kings?
I don't get why the internet is so crazy about it.
It's garbage.

Dropped it, and I'm reading The Dying Earth right now. The book is fine, just a bit disappointed it's a bunch of short stories instead of a full-length novel.

Basically SDL is used for input and random tedious stuff only. The actual game. if I actually use SDL, requires me to write all of the raw opengl by hand? And there is no free portability (3 main desktop os + mobile + console), I need to write OpenGL ES in a very portable way to achieve it. Unless I wait for SDL3 or something. Or unless I write a basic 2D games, then I can use the built-in SDL rendering. Is that correct?

I want to leave godot, but the best portable alternative (SDL) seems crazy for me. Should I acclimate by making games with pygame first? I read it's just an SDL wrapper with extra convenience.
