Posting again to see if anyone has read this yet. The Mercy of Gods. The official blurb pretty much spoils the plot of the entire book, but I guess the fun is really the worldbuilding and the plot hardly matters because it's the setup for a future series.

So Robert E. Howard and Lovecraft were friends or part of a writing group. In Conan, he was faced with Horrors and he won and my friends whole take is the way I’m incorporating it isn’t pure cosmic horror because the characters aren’t affected enough.

For example I have a woman afflicted by the Goddess of Freedom and she has lost all moral and mortal ties to everything except her daughter who she raped a drunk noble to get. They have a tether of humanity left with these powers. So for you would you have a problem with the tether?

The MC is ultimately afflicted as well with a gods power, but he has the mentality of trying to do good on his way out. It’s isn’t like Lovecraft but it isn’t as hopeful as Conan so, yeah.

As for Dark Souls being peak, Elden Ring is essentially Dark Souls Extra and the formula has run its fucking course because they ruined the DLC with a lack of a story minus the “I really want to fuck my brother” stuff since they had three fucking lines for it. I read "Tales of the Dying Earth" and I really like its mixing of pseudo-medieval elements with futuristic or odd elements. It reminds me of Simon Stålenhag's "Tales from the Loop" and nostalgia for weird or unusual structures and buildings, which I saw in my childhood. Also I like all Cugel's unexpected turns in his wandering in "Cugel's saga", really like a kaleidoscope of vivid landscapes and adventures.

Any books with such elements, excepting the other books in Dying Earth genre? And I don't mean any post-apocaliptic fantasy, but rather author's talent to create specific nostalgia, atmosphere and perception of his world with help of "out of place" and "out-of-the-way" structures.

Usually this is more male focused concept but you can allow her female qualities to be front and center while still making her strong in some way (she doesn't need to pick up an axe and fight)

Could be something to read for inspiration. With the disclaimer, of course, that since I haven't finished the book I don't know if it gets suddenly retarded in the end or something.
An aristocratic character like that would have knowledge and skills that not every unwashed barbarian would. She would have received an education, she would know how things like politics, business, diplomacy and spycraft work, at least on a basic level. She would be literate, while the vulgar might not be. She could know multiple languages. And she might have experience using her looks and femininity to get what she wants, and the meathead might be dumb enough to fall for it, at least initially. Lastly, she herself has been raised to be a political token to be traded for diplomatic favors so she could convince him to hold on to her for ransom or something, or promise him things like money, land and titles if he helps her get her way (with no intention of ever holding on to her word, but chad the cimmerian just might be naive enough to believe her).
Basically, it's her social manipulation skills vs his physical dominance.
As for why doesn't the guy just immediately rape her, maybe he just hates aristocracy enough that he doesn't want to admit he's attracted to her. He has pride, you know. And maybe he's cognizant enough to know she's more valuable as an untouched virgin (she's probably not but he doesn't need to know)
You could put them into situations where they have to write letters and negotiate with foreign powers and un-barbariany things like that.

I actually have a pretty good reason for him to help her. When he was young his love interest was killed by her abusive father, and he feels like it was his fault for failing to protect her. He sees protecting the aristocrat as a second chance.

I looked up the artist and I think she just paints that way. For the record, I don't think it's a great looking cover, but my issue with it is more with the composition being boring.
The anime girl on the cover is just supposed to be a literal anime girl IRL. A genetwist, a designer baby.
Half of the text characterizing her is about how punchable she is. The other half is male-gazey stuff about how her butt wobbles in zero gravity.

I figured he might be a fan of those games but now I'm wondering if it's just one of those cases where an AI ends up randomly stealing stuff from existing works and the author doesn't bother with changing the names. It seems such a weird way to pay homage. There's also other stuff "borrowed" from elsewhere like the Belters who seem to be just 1:1 taken from the Expanse novels.

I read the whole series 4 or 5 times. For me they are great and peak at The Silver Spike. Books of South are interesting too but I understand why some people hate. I like them, specially Bleak Seasons, but She is the Darkness and Water Sleeps are the low points of the whole series for me. Soldiers Live is good, I know it has some cheap nostalgia moments but after so many years with those guys you cannot tear up a little, it feels like a good farewell for everybody.

I guess A Pitiless Rain will never happen, and maybe this is for the best since the last short stories are pretty bad, still. After everything that happens in Soldiers Live the title alone piqued my curiosity.

This book was written by the same guy who wrote Tigana. I didn't finish Tigana. It just got kind of boring. This book seems to be going the same route. I'm a little over 1/5th of the way into the book, and they only just now introduced a fantasy element. The 1/5th of the book is dedicated to politics, world building, internal thoughts about what the characters are feeling and sensing. And expressing attraction to women. Not even like sex scenes. But just thinking about the beauty and sensuality of women.

The first few chapters of the book are just world building politics. You don't even get introduced to the main character until you're a number of long chapters in. Everything before him, is just the long form version of "the neighboring kingdom underwent a succession, and they're unstable". Which probably didn't need to be played out on the pages. It could have just been a summary in the main character's tale. And he could have started his story a lot sooner, so we can get introduced to some magic sooner, and get to substantial events sooner.

I'm hoping that now because the main character is finally starting his journey, that the book will get better. But I'm also not very hopeful, because the author only seems to be interested in politics and women. The fantasy aspect is very small, and the adventure aspect is very small. This guy wants to write ancient themed political dramas, but merely uses the fantasy label to sell books.

The main characters of Serpentwar are a lot more flawed than the cast of Riftwar. They're still fundamentally good people, just not the kind of stereotypical heroic princes and whatnot you're familiar with from Magician and its sequels. The conflict in the first book is a lot more down to earth and tied to the immediate experiences of the characters, which I found really compelling to read for the first time. Later in the Serpentwar Saga, Feist does his usual thing in escalating the stakes until the conflict becomes this abstract war of good vs evil on a cosmic scale, but for the first like 2 books there's lots of human-centric drama and conflict that is refreshing to read from him.

The overall plot of the first book smacks of "military fantasy" (Glen Cook, Steve Erikson, etc), and the second is like "fantasy wolf of wall street" for lack of a better descriptor, with the military fantasy stuff taking more of a back seat.

Also, this saga is a lot more "gritty" than Riftwar. It's not just the characters being more flawed, the violence seems more graphic and there's a lot more sex, particularly in book 2.

The MC lives in a country that controls all sources of information and have lied about its past. The state was formed hundreds of years ago by genocides and fear, but citizens now think it was formed by all different groups coming together to form a powerful state for all. The story starts with the MC getting hired for a government job where he has to help fight the rebels, but no one knows that there are rebels to begin with. I've been trying to go through Wingchell Chun's recommendations on the Atomic Rockets site, seems to be as good a way as any to find the hidden gems. But it's a bit of a roller coaster. He seems to be more concerned with the scientific accuracy in these books than the themes or the literary merits. If the space physics and the radiators are correct then he doesn't care if the rest of the book is monkeys raping babies by Heinrich Himmler written in trochaic tetrameter. Which is fine, I guess, scientific accuracy is what his site is about.

There's some really weird stuff there, not all of it is good, but almost none of it leaves me cold.
The last one I read was the Devon Eriksen book (see my semi-review above) I liked it even if the author is a weirdo. Another one I liked was Semper Mars by Ian Douglas but that's from the 90s which I guess makes it "old". Raven's Peace by Glynn Stewart was typical wokeslop with pronouns and all that it implies but otherwise not the worst thing I've read.

I've been trying out the whole western haremlit thing after never touching it until a few months ago. Paladin of the Sigil happened to be the first (besides a one off book I read) and it's a pretty strong read for the most part, though I'd say book 3 is the weakest one and 2's pacing wasn't that good for its first half or more. The harem expands but it never gets so big that it overwhelms the story and the plotline is actually pretty solid throughout with a rather competent and powerful main villain. The world building isn't half bad either.

At the moment I'm finishing up Fostering Faust which starts as something a bit more unique, but I feel like it got worse in each subsequent novel and 3 is the biggest step down of the bunch.

I might at least try some others at some point to hopefully find something on Paladin's level or better because my book options are pretty lackluster these days.
