In my opinion the most important aspect of fiction, including fantasy and sci-fi, is the human element. Once you get past the gods and armies, the Iliad is ultimately a story about a man who is scared to die. The Odyssey is about a man trying to reunite with his wife. I feel like modern fantasy and sci-fi are too preoccupied with worldbuilding and giant battles to remember this. Does anyone agree or disagree?

Not really, we get a few details but nothing I would consider particularly extensive. To be fair they're both dead civilizations, but Letheras was the only culture that really felt developed in my opinion.

Anyone reading books from current year? Most releases this year seem to be sequels to things I haven't read yet, and this was one of the only debuts I found.
>>23683937
ASOIAF features between 5-10 characters that are among my favorite characters in all of fantasy. /sffg/ gave me the impression that Sanderson had a bad case of worldbuilding autism, but I found Sazed's arc in Mistborn series 1 to be highly compelling and emotional.
I like the Odyssey but I also fine ancient literature to be more impersonal. The themes are there, but as Harold Bloom would say, Shakespeare invented human emotions. I'm more invested in the protagonists of a Jules Verne or H.G. Wells novel than I am in pre-Shakespeare mythological heroes that are written in a way that we only get a small glimpse of their psyche.

because american "publishers" don't think he's going to sell well.

the only vance stuff sold in america by american publishers are Tor's Dying Earth omnibus paperback and Emphyrio, which is in the LoA's sci-fi novels anthology.

Shame because I think Vance could be big bucks if they tried selling him again. The used market for him is ravenous and even buying fucking shitty old paperbacks for his stuff gets expensive.

At least there's Spatterlight Press that's kept his work in print but they're a print on demand house in Poland? I can get any Vance book in hardcover from them via Amazon but it's 25 bucks. Paperbacks are 15-20.

The only other easy to find older Vance books are the Caldwall trilogy, The Demon Princes collections by SFBC/Tor, and Planet of Adventure collection by Tor. I think Vance has been recognized as a genuinely great writer and it baffles me why he's not been elevated at all. Like, a Library of America set of Vance would sell like hotcakes. Fucking Gollancz editions of anything by Vance is expensive on the second-hand market. There's clearly a high demand.

I'd love to get me a hardcover Lyonesse set but the fucking books are expensive.

Every woman even from the start is batshit crazy. And the whole series is one long dick tease. You might think its pretty cool if you read it as a kid like I did, but with perspective it's so devoid of substance. I guess the long length intrigues people but there is so much pointless travel and filler from place to place, which is the real reason why it's so long. Wow they stop at another inn, wow they stop at another inn, etc. I don't really get why people would invest the time into reading it these days, maybe just to say they did which I guess is as valid a reason as any if you have been reading fantasy for a while. But if you're new and want to read pop fantasy then you should much rather look at stormlight or song of ice and fire and get what you probably actually want instead.

oh right, collectors ruined the market for the Fantasy Masterwork line and I see almost all the books in it going for 20+ dollars. The SF Masterworks line isn't as bad, is it? I don't know Gollancz's rep too well but I've never spent more than 10 bucks on a book.

They seem like a decent way to collect more modern copies of these classics, provided one doesn't get scalped. I saw some copy of SF Masterworks Day of the Triffids go for 30+ on ebay. There's also their Golden Age Masterworks like that made a John Carter Collection that's like 20+ bucks. Not sure if that's worth it because a hundred John Carter Anthologies exist for cheaper.

Actually,do the gollancz editions get priced higher because they appeal to consoomers? I just liked being able to get a recent-ish printed copy of Lord of Light. I'd like a neat edition of this book but the '70s SFBC hardcover goes for like 80 bucks and the original hardcover run goes for even more expensive. Any Vance books are more ridiculous.

Why does science fiction not focus more on space ships?
Space battles are great. They are awe inspiring, they look great on screen, they sound amazing, but when I read them in a book they're kind of boring. Why is that?
Why does a battle scene between two sorcerers seem more interesting in a book than a battle between space ships? Even a sea battle between sea-faring ships like cruisers reads as more interesting. Why?

Is this the reason why Sci Fi usually boils down to the same factional and personal relationships as other genres?

Try the Warhammer Crime or Warhammer Horror imprints. I'm a simp for Fehervari where combat is short, brutal, and not at all heroic. Fire Caste is basically space Apocalypse Now, and you get much more creeping dread and hanging out with people while things happen (its not uneventful) on the way to the battles.

Warhammer Crime for 40K is basically a hive city detective noir imprint and is one of the biggest sources of day to day characterization of the imperium. Its the only book where you'll see a character experience the universal thinly cut meat with bread and a secret sauce that defines urbanized life.

Why is this site so unbelieviably racists. Cmon It's 2024 and not a single asian or african novel. How is shit like this allowed? Wouldn't you expect someone over the last 10 years of an explosion in popularity of xianxia, wuxia and litrpg that someone wouldn't go, "hey maybe we shouldn't exclude all these new voices?" But I guess either noone said that or they were ignored (much more likely).

There's some that get memed on for just disliking certain aspects of their writing like Aaron Dembski-Bowden, or Gav Thorpe who gets some hate because he hates certain factions yet still gets to write for the Eldar. Horus Heresy is uneven but Robert Raith is a rising star of the BL.

I personally dislike Graham McNeill because his prose is absolute literalist trash that can't convey anything more deep than a robotic description of exactly what each character is doing or thinking. However he delivers B-movie schlock and that has a lot of fans. Warhammer tops out at genre fiction that apes either a genre or specific works but placed into grimdark. Ciaphas Cain is just Flashman, Warhammer Crime is just noir, but its still fun.

Just finished the Gormenghast trilogy.
The whole thing felt extremely slow and meandered all over the place.
Entire pages could be dedicated to describing a single piece of architecture that a character walks past in five seconds and then never sees again.
Random castle kitchen assistants with no spoken lines have tangents where their entire family lineage is explained and are then forgotten about for the rest of the book.
Random shit happens in a way that makes me feel like the author wrote whatever shit popped into his head that day with zero plan for the overall story. So much shit is repeated and repeated and repeated and the plot moves at the speed of continental drift

I loved it.
The descriptions of people and places were so rich and lush. You can feel the atmosphere of the place and turns what is essentially a soap opera about a small cast of characters living in a fuckhuge castle megastructure into the book equivalent of a juicy glazed Christmas ham.
Can anybody recommend something similar? Something that hits the same vibes?

Sword Art Online did it better. It's a fantasy story where the lovers got together in the middle of the story. That was the main reason I started paying more attention to it.

Probably also explains why the main awards have become so stale too. The anti-hugo campaign of ages ago was pretty stupid but they've become so insular in response, it's just the same authors who tour the con circuit every time they have a new book out now.
Could also be an issue of the votes coming from con members, the modern con audience just isn't reading anywhere near as widely as the ones from the early years of the awards.

I admittedly haven't read as much fantasy as I'd like to, so there may be an example of this in a book somewhere, but in your personal opinion, is it possible to have a High Fantasy world, where magic is commonplace, but difficult enough to master that you can still have men and women who rely purely on martial prowess be effective in the story, yet also not have the magic be to convoluted to make its practice impractical and redundant?
>tl;dr can a fantasy story have magic and swords in equal measure, without one overshadowing the other?

You can take care of that with world building. Race 'A' has a natural resistance to magic or there are artifacts left over from some ancient civilization that can dispel it, and so on and so forth.

I agree, and to springboard off of this answer, I feel like a way to avoid convulsions in this idea is that the race with the natural resistance should be just that, specifically resistant to the magic, not immune, so that a caster of high enough power or a group of weaker casters aren't immediately outmatched by one random from the race, meanwhile the artifacts that can dispel magic should be few and far between
it's a balancing act of ensuring no one has an end-all-be-all trump card to any given situation but if a character moves a situation to their advantage, they can come out on top

>men who rely purely on martial prowess be effective in the story
Unrealistic in a high magic setting. Every single reason that they are effective requires a limitation of magic. Stacking enough to make it happen turns it into a low magic setting. Best case scenario, it's a technological limitation - wizards simply aren't advanced yet to outmode fighter types entirely at this point in time, but if they develop enough they will.

If you give a fighter a magic sword or magic strength augmentation then they're just a swordwizard of some kind, stop pretending they're not relying on magic to pull off superhuman deeds. At least xianxia shit is honest about this and just calls everyone relevant a cultivator. A wizard could cultivate his body magic to cast really powerful FIST spells.

The Mercy of Gods - James S.A. Corey

Really disappointing read. Reads like a shitty litrpg imitation of the expanse with zero interesting characters or ideas. Half the book is shitty internal monologue of random characters ‘processing their trauma’ which was the worst part of the expanse (think of the worst naomi chapters ad nauseum), plus some shitty cryptic stream-of-consciousness from the new protomolecule stand-in (which is so unoriginal that many people are guessing this is a stealth sequel/prequel to the expanse). The rest of the book is the totally threadbare litrpg plot, some pointless and forced sexual intrigue, plus some of that ‘competency porn’ style bullshit from the new male lead (ala Andy Weir), but he’s not even competent, actually just mildly intuitive when every other character is dumb as rocks. There’s also absolutely zero attempt to actually write an ending, this is clearly meant to just be part 1 of a new series with zero consideration of it actually working as a self-contained book.

3/10, won’t be reading the sequel, even though I loved the expanse.

dafyd's only quality is that he is the sole character who doesn't spend the entire series crying or being retarded which is a pretty shitty way to write a protagonist. the protomemecule still wanting to fuck him after swapping bodies was truly bizarre and stinks of tv show nonsense
>people are guessing this is a stealth sequel/prequel to the expanse
i think it's absolutely an expanse sequel, there's a line about genetic similarities between the fivefold enemy and the captured anjinn humans and anjinn is obviously one of the planets cut off at the end of the expanse
i'll probably read the sequel the same way i eventually read this one, skipping all the gay interpersonal drama scenes because they literally added nothing

Hey you know those novellas Scott Lynch has said he's going to publish any day now for years?
They're actually happening for real!

https://scottlynch.us/updates.html

Also a new short story.

>Grimdark Magazine is celebrating ten years of phantasmagorical grit, and I was invited to be a contributor for the anniversary issue in October. After a bit of discussion, we decided to seize the opportunity to do something really special.
>I'm delighted to report that "Locke Lamora and the Bottled Serpent" will be a two-part extravaganza bridging the October 2024 and January 2025 issues of GDM.
>In this tale from Locke's teenage years, our nervous, hormonal, romantically-confused hero spends a few months working as a bar-back in one of Camorr's most brutal Right People taverns. This is one of Father Chains' endless series of training and personal enrichment schemes; as per usual, it's full of fuckery, and as per usual, Locke is expected to work it all out himself. His only real ally of the moment is the aging mercenary Mazoc Saba, a man addicted to risking his own life in a gambling spectacle involving poisoned wine.
>As Locke's troubles boil over, so do Mazoc Saba's debts, and when you publicly flaunt your obligations to the one and only Capa Barsavi, Barsavi reaches out to publicly remind you of them...

Shallan is passable female character in the first two books, but the moment her personality spilts in 3rd and 4th she becomes non-character. Which makes sense in-universe but comletely boring to read about.
Thats the problem for Kaladin as well. He is solid character concept, but mentall illness coming back again and again and again while being realistic, actively undermines the reading experience.
Making characters flawed in terms of mental health was interesting concept in theory but compeltely fucked up the characters in practice.

Picrel was surprisingly enjoyable as a trilogy. It invoked "modern nerd references" just the right amount, and the core concept was peak semi-hard - or "chode" - sci-fi. Author manages to deal with his inability to write characters with noticeably different voices by openly writing the same character slightly altered, and the pacing and plot structure were engaging.

It was the equivalent of Five Guys, but I went in expecting McDonald's and was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't even really R*ddit once you got past the first 50 pages or so, where there's a particularly r/atheism plot point that is quickly jettisoned and forgotten without being overly important.

It's no Gene Wolfe or GGK, but sometimes you want fast food, and this provided me a fun pallete cleanser between heavier stuff. Also, I think the first was self-published, which is always cool to see succeed.

He will never finish his series because his goal was never really to write a good story. What he really wanted was to become a public philosopher and a new literary icon. Everything about him screams that he is a pretentious narcissist, from his seething rage at those who sincerely mistake his work for children's literature to his mental breakdowns in the face of the slightest criticism of his philosophical views. As soon as he realized he was never going to be the next Daniel Dennett or Cormac McCarthy, he ditched Second Apocalypse to save face. Sure, he could set up a Patreon and self-publish his books now that his relationship with his publisher has completely disintegrated, but that would be completely below what his deluded mind thinks he deserves.

COPE
BAKKER SURPASSED TOLKIEN
>Then the madness fell away. Once again it was the pure thunder of the charge. The strange camaraderie of men bent to a single, fatal purpose. Hummocks, scrub, and the bones of the Vulgar Holy War’s dead rushed beneath. The wind bled through chain links, tousled Thunyeri braids and Tydonni crests. Bright banners slapped against the sky. The heathen, wicked and foul, drew closer, ever closer. One last storm of arrows, these ones almost horizontal to the ground, punching against shield and armour. Some were struck from their saddles. Tongue tips were bitten off in the concussion of the fall. The unhorsed arched across the turf, screamed and swatted at the sky. Wounded mounts danced in frothing circles nearby. The rest thundered on, over grasses, through patches of blooming milkwort waving in the wind. They couched their lances, twenty thousand men draped in great mail hauberks over thick felt, with coifs across their faces and helms that swept down to their cheeks, riding chargers caparisoned in mail or iron plates. The fear dissolved into drunken speed, into the momentum, became so mingled with exhilaration as to be indistinguishable from it. They were addicted to the charge, the Men of the Tusk. Everything focused into the glittering tip of a lance. The target nearer, nearer … The rumble of hooves and drums drowned their kinsmen’s song. They crashed through a thin screen of sumac … Saw eyes whiten in sudden terror. Then impact. The jarring splinter of wood as lances speared through shield, through armour. Suddenly the ground became still and solid beneath them, and the air rang with wails and shouts. Hands drew sword and axe. Everywhere figures grappled and hacked. Horses reared. Blades pitched blood into the sky. And the Kianene fell, undone by their ferocity, crumpling beneath northern hands, dying beneath pale faces and merciless blue eyes. The heathen recoiled from the slaughter—and fled.

I'm beginning to think the Eye of Argon isn't that well structure.
Like the first chapter is only 500 words, and first paragraph is 100 words of purple prose that essentially only establishes that the story takes place in Norgolian Empire. What else am I supposed to take away from this:

>The weather beaten trail wound ahead into the dust racked climes of the baren land which dominates large portions of the Norgolian empire. Age worn hoof prints smothered by the sifting sands of time shone dully against the dust splattered crust of earth. The tireless sun cast its parching rays of incandescense from overhead, half way through its daily revolution. Small rodents scampered about, occupying themselves in the daily accomplishments of their dismal lives. Dust sprayed over three heaving mounts in blinding clouds, while they bore the burdonsome cargoes of their struggling overseers.

Then again, GRRM writes even lengthier purple prose about food and people defend it.

Here is a premise I came up with the other day for a science fiction story.

In the near future, a french billionaire purchases a rocket. He has cancer and has decided to immortalize himself as the first person to die on a celestial body other than earth. He masks the mission as a joyride around the moon, but changes the coordinates for a direct impact with the sea of tranquility, and he succeeds.

Several things happen as consequence.

Immediately after the crash, a retro-futuristic alien spaceship appears orbiting the moon.

CERN scientist and similar research bodies are utterly baffled as the data suddenly indicates fundamental physics have changed radically without impacting the macroscopic world.

Deep Space imagery taken before and after the moon crash now show clear indicators of intelligent life across the galaxy.

Humanity is now faced with proof that the universe is an anthropocentric simulation. Off-world human death was the trigger for the next stage, but it was planned to happen much earlier in our technological development. Due to sheer happenstance we avoided the trigger for nearly a century and now the simulation is struggling to bridge the scrip.

>who can't hit a woman
They aren't women, in one piece the newkama are gender nonconforming and ivankov can essentially change their body to look like whatever.
Sanji intuits this in less than a panel and decides that he can hit them.
And even if they were women, of course a chivalric code would be tied to a traditional notion of woman, that doesn't surprise anyone.

Your premise is factually incorrect. Based on the level of your research, you shouldn't call it science fiction.

I'm glad you googled "oldest forum" and think you know shit. I've only ever heard newfags echo the "asian shithole ・ hobby" meme.
If you actually used usenet you would know that the "posts" are just emails and formatting depends on ones newreader, usually just a pager and a single image, hence not competing for screen space with other posts.

I read Tesh's novel, and it was in no way deserving of the award. The prose style is purely mediocre, verging on terrible when she tries to describe action. Genuinely embarrassing that this won -- but at least she's not Scalzi!

Why is the Realm of the Elderlings series so highly praised? I just finished the first book and it was a slog to get through. I thought it was going to be ASOIAF-lite but the characters all feel fake. When they talk it’s like I can hear the author talking through them. Then I went back to reading Harry Turteldove and his autism makes everyone feel so real, even the aliens. I’m worried it may be unconscious misogyny not giving the female author a fair chance.
Back to Assassin’s Apprentice, the world building also felt very generic. Unlike GRRM where the characters all have long lineages and rich family history, the deepest it goes in AA is
>X’s dad was from the royal race, Y’s mom was a forest woman, Z’s mom was a wild woman, theta’s dad was from the pirate race, etc
The “assassinations” didn’t feel particularly clever either. The author tries to make it seem like 4d chess is being played but it doesn’t read that way. The magic system is also boring and the main character is a beta who gets mindbroken by his instructor.
I’m going to give Royal Assassin a try as soon as I finish Turtledove’s Worldwar series.

I agree. Having a bunch of different POVs is often a red flag. Having such a wide scope without any central emotional conflict makes it much harder to stay invested, I think I dropped Malazan and Bakker's book series several times before finishing the first book. The Witcher series is somewhat pulpy but its condensed story makes it way more readable and enjoyable than 90% of the books that get recommended here.

It depends on the story but I usually prefer having a clearly defined main character and reading their thoughts. There are only a few exceptions where having a massive cast doesn't bog down the pace.
