Ya, I know you'll blast me for exhibiting autism to the 9000th degree here, but I fucking hate this question—for a few reasons.

My main problem is that you have to fucking tell them what it's about. I hate having to come up with a summary on the fly. If they don't know you very well, then they'll form judgemetns about you based on the content of the book, and how you describe it. Should I be critical? Should I feign a high degree of fascination with the content, so that they'll think I'm massively into such-and-such, even though I'm fairly indifferent? Or do I downplay that aspect of the book so as to avoid the impression that it's a passion of mine? Should I act critical? FUUUUUU so many questions.

There's also the fact that, most of the time, they're just asking the question mechanically. They don't really care. Chances are, they don't really ever read themselves (this being true for most people I know), so it's not like they're gonna be like, "OH FUCK, TEXT ME DAT ISBN!"

In certain cases, what you're reading is a well-known classic. It always sounds pretentious to name-drop a classic, so I find myself feigning a tone of disinterest ... dunno why exactly, seems to sound less pretentious than naming the work in some authoritative manner.
