Just finished a few early Conan stories by Howard, and that was the first thing of his I ever read. The writing has no right to be this clean and concise, I fucking love it. Bonus points to The God in the Bowl, I wish more boring 600 page books had "then Conan kills or maims everyone in the room" as a whodunnit mystery resolution.

His writing is sublime, each passage is crisp and brimming with visceral language and emotion. I am saddened by people thinking of pulp as tripe when some of the best pulp had some of the finest, emotive writing I've ever read through. Howard is especially masterful. I have his books in a collection and cherish them. Every man who's soul hungers should read through Conan at least once. Some passages of meditation within those works have left an imprint in me unlike anything else.

Navola - Paolo Bacigalupi (2024)

Navola is from beginning to end, Davico's retelling of his origin story. He was born as the son of a banker who led the most powerful family in the city. He's at least somewhat of an unreliable narrator because he lies, tells you he lied, and also says he'd never lie to you. Davico is among the least agentic protagonists I've read. As often accompanies a lack of agency, his life is filled with angst and suffering. All the other characters are better and compensate for him, though I think Bacigalupi went too far with his characterization of him as a son unworthy of the greatness of his forebears. None of it goes unused by the narrative, but I wonder whether it was worth the cost to have such an uninspiring and anguished protagonist. This may be the sort of book that is meant to be contrasted with later ones.

The vast majority takes place in the city of Navola, which is readily comparable to Florence in the time of the Medici. The map is similar and there's often words that are more or less Italian, the meaning of which are usually made evident by their context. I remain ambivalent about this practice because it both adds and detracts from the reading experience. Everywhere else can easily be related to a historical analogue as well.

A singular fantastical element, a dragon's eye seeking a bond, is arguably all that separates this from clearly being secondary world historical fiction. In terms of a plot, there isn't really much of one. There's familicide, political maneuvering, in-depth discussions about trade and geopolitics, slaughtering traitors, and much else. What Davico really wants you to know though is how his day to day life was. Which is him trying to improve himself to be worthy, indulging his actual interest of communing with nature, being a pawn, and having tense situations with his adopted sister. There are a few sex scenes and one in particular is of considerable duration and graphically described in explicit detail.

There's no clear sense of purpose or meaning to anything that happens. I don't believe that in of itself is the message, but it could be. Maybe the following books will clarify matters. Perhaps related to this is how Navola is being called literary fantasy, which is questionable, though the writing is nice and flowed well. However, it does have a lot of exposition both early and late in the story.

Navola is Bacigalupi's first fantasy novel. He usually writes science fiction. It doesn't read like anything else I've read from him, which is most of what he's written. That has its benefits and disappointments. Despite my concerns I'll read the next book whenever it releases, if only because so much of my overall assessment depends on them. If there isn't another one, then that's unfortunate because I don't think this stands alone. As has been the case with all of his novels, I wanted to like it far more than I did, which continues to be troubling.

Why not both? Paladin of souls is a stand alone sequel with Ista as the protagonist, and expands more on some of the Gods (particularly the Father and the Bastard).
Also, the Penric series is legitimately excellent. Theyre novellas, but i think we're up to 12 of them now so there's plenty to sink your teeth into.

I founf the Vorkisogan books to be a little dated however, very 80's upper middle class sci fi if that makes and sense. It also devolves into quite a bit of femcoomerism.

Alternatively, ayys send nanites to harvest or destroy any available copper and aluminium on the surface that shows up. Electricity = gone. 23666209

I finished reading Django Wexler's most recent trilogy, Burning Blade & Silver Eye, comprised of three novels: Ashes of the Sun, Blood of the Chosen, and Emperor of Ruin. Here's my condensed thoughts on it.

So, this is marketed as fantasy, but it smacks of sci-fi in a lot of ways. There's supernatural powers, but they are funneled into technological developments like genetic engineering, flying cars, blaster rifles, etc. The story takes place in the remnants of an empire once ruled by an elder race known as the Chosen, now ruled over by a human republic and an order of, well, basically like Jedi Knights but with more spectacular and flashy powers. They even have an iconic weapon that is just a handle with a magic blade that comes out of it.

The story follows two siblings, a brother, Gyre, and his younger sister, Maya, who are initially opposed to one another due to being tragically and traumatically separated in early childhood. Maya was raised by the Twilight Order (the Jedi guys) on account of having the same vanishingly rare powers they do, which is the reason they abducted her as a toddler. Gyre was permanently maimed in that abduction, and swore vengeance against the Order, leading to him joining a variety of would-be rebels against the republic. They start off as enemies in book 1, but by book 2 they're cooperating (tenuously), and in book 3 they are steadfast allies united against a common foe.

I feel like I was teased with a dramatic brother vs sister fated conflict plot but it never really pans out. The larger background conflict involving the elder races and their 400 year old war is what really drives the plot and over the course of the novels is what supplants the personal conflicts. The world building behind it is pretty decent, though I found the plot twists rather easy to predict.

This is the second series by Wexler that I have read, and so now I can confidently say that he definitely likes lesbians, and seems to feature gratuitous lesbian sex in as many novels as possible. I felt it was wildly out of place in the Shadow Campaigns, but less so in this series, except that he redoubled his efforts at inclusion by making 2/3 characters homosexual or bisexual. That's not an exaggeration, either. Maya's group in book 1 is composed of 4 people, 3/4 are gay, including Maya. While there are male homosexuals, none of them have intimate scenes, while virtually EVERY lesbian couple among the named cast do have intimate scenes.

To be sure, there's some hetero content as well. Gyre is straight, and has multiple lovers, but man one of them tests your patience. Kit is a character I haven't mentioned so far, because I'd rather not remember her. I think 90% of her dialogue is raunchy innuendo. I'm no prude, but it gets very tiresome when it's not well written and often is used to spoil the mood of a scene.

Also, the series ends rather abruptly, without much care given to exploring various characters' lives. It just stops, like this review.

The lesbian drama in Shadow Campaigns is a big negative factor for me in wanting to reread it. It's sad, because I felt that The Thousand Names was really solid Napoleonic fantasy. I was willing to pick up this series because I was sort of hoping Wexler got the lesbian fetish out of his system with Shadow Campaigns, but clearly he was just getting warmed up. I kept with it because the rest of it was solidly written. In short, it's what the kids today call "safe horny". Wexler can't commit to writing lesbian smut even though I get the impression that's what he really wants to do as an author.

I kept getting this feeling that Warcraft 3 was inspired by Gotrek and Felix. The dates are close 1999 release of the first Gotrek and Felix stories and 2002 Warcraft 3 release. The chain lightning spells, the grotesque undead monsters, the burly dwarves and civilized humans. It's far more enjoyable than any of the Warcraft books I've read so far.

Of course I dig some more and found out that the Gotrek & Felix author also wrote some Warcraft books haha.

Humanity has regressed so much that the casual adventure novels of a 20 year old kid in Texas that he wrote for "weird fiction" garbage rags have better prose, creativity, characterization and soul than a single modern fantasy book written since Tolkien.

People online will ask "what new sword and sorcery fantasy books are out there?" And you see people recommending silly trash like Kings of the Wyld and Blacktongue Thief (both garbage books). It's sad how far the genre has fallen.

How have we lost that pure spark of masculinity and magic? Men who appreciate the poetry of good prose. Who study history. Who write stories that stir their hearts and tell tales of mighty men crushing their enemies and loving the most beautiful women in the land. To write something so true and pure of the masculine spirit is unimaginable to the modern writer.

There's pretty much no detail though. It's just implied sex, not vaguely described sex. And then you have one character that constantly snoops on everyone else's love life and makes really crass comments about it the next morning. Without fail, happens every time. It's so formulaic. He book ends every single intimate scene with some emotional foreplay, fades to black, then has his sex commentary character come out to waggle her eyebrows and deliver crude innuendo.

If he's going to insist on this half-assed way of writing sex I at least wish he'd get better at writing foreplay. Or find a way to do the "morning after" scene that didn't reduce sexual congress to the level of a fart joke.

Pretty fucking pozzed. The very first book of his Blood Song series was absolute kino and this was done on purpose to deceive the reader. After that it went straight from based to pozzed, think of gay shit, lesbian shit, stong wahmen etc. Even disregarding all the pozzed shit, the story itself, world building, magic and fanfasy aspect were poorly executed. The first book was a good introduction to magic and the world but the later books didn't continue developing any of it. Ryan just stopped at the introduction and instead spent all his efforts on pozz.
The following series about dragons or something was even worse. The mc was some poc and the world felt like something straight out of liberal dystopia.

Do I not like science fiction? some I have read:

>The foundation. Non-characters. Slog to finish it.
>Dune. Dropped after the second.
>Do androids dream of electric sheeps. Fine.
>Red Rising series. My favorite so far.
>Enders game. Dropped on the second.
>The expanse. Dnf.
I always end up dropping long series. I read the first book but lose interest in the sequels. I am so tired of plots that revolve around investigating old civilizations' ruins.

I like characters first, plot second. If I don't connect with the characters, I lose interest.
I have read Ursula K. has good characterization. I don't know where to start with her works. Which do you guys recommend?

You'd be better off picking a different genre than sci-fi, then. Sci-fi is all about plot / setting / concept. Characters are an afterthought, and if they're good, it's not usually on purpose.

Warcraft began as a Warhammer videogame that was hastily redesigned into its own thing partway through development after a disagreement resulted in the devs losing rights to the Warhammer IP. It still had a lot of Warhammer in its DNA when Warcraft 3 was made, though Warcraft 3 was also the turning point when it started really developing its identity as something more than a generic Warhammer knockoff.

There are collected forms of the Elric series, and I understand you're asking specifically for Elric. However I think the best collection is the Millenium collection of the Eternal Champions series. You get the entire spread of Elric in two volumes: Elric of Melnibone and Stormbringer. You also get so much more context and a great encapsulation of the entire sequence which most people disregard for the sake of focusing on that wonderfully Byronic prince. I especially love Von Bek.

I shall now link first the collection of Millenium printed works, then a separate one that is just the Elric series in publishing order, including its myriad reprints.

I know you said you dislike long series, so I'll drop Vorkosigan first just to get it out of the way. It is a saga but its very much following a set of characters you come to love despite or because of their flaws.

For more one and done works you could read Player of Games without reading any other Culture novel. One man being forced to commit cultural warfare against an alien race over sheer moral superiority and his own internal struggle as he comes to understand the other race more and more as he simultaneously destroys it. John Steakley's Armor is an intensely psychological look at a heroic man who uses power armor. Cherryh's oeuvre is very character focused, I'd start with something like Rim Runners.

Ursula K is a bit cattycornered for what you want particularly. She does focus on characters but its because the characters themselves represent the plot. The Lathe of Heaven does explore Orr as exploring unintended consequences of the well-wisher, and I'd recommend starting there if you want something New Wave but not in space. The Left hand of Darkness also looks at characters to explore themes of gender and society, and I'd recommend starting there or with Dispossessed to get something with a little more space-age to it.

Yeah I've heard the starting point with le Guin, if one axes Earthsea from the list are basically

>the Hainish cycle from the beginning or start from Left Hand.

>The Dispossessed if you're up for something really odd

>The Lathe of Heaven if you just want to explore something not in space but 100% New Wave.

I haven't quite bitten down on le Guin yet but I hear she's been co-opted by lefties and commies so I'm not sure how good her work is.

Anyways, /sffg/ what's a good area to start with in terms of good sci-fi/fantasy for the late 90s-21st century. I've heard Ian Banks, Alastair Reynolds, and Adrian Tchaikovsky a ton. Same with Egan, Liu, Chiang, Mieville, and Vandermeer.

He definitely has the ‘whacky zany wizard shenanigans archetype’ and that might grate, but him being gay isn’t used to have him constantly slobbering over cock. First was just ok, second was actually pretty good, third was a shittier rehash of the first. I had to force myself through it and haven't yet felt compelled to continue on after that one. She writes in an imo extremely forced style with overly wordy and flowery sentences just for the sake of it. There's barely any real characterization of the characters and they all feel like simple cardboard cutouts. I get that it's intended for a younger audience and it definitely shows. As someone not blinded by nostalgia and reading them as an adult who's read a lot of other fantasy I couldn't get into it. Not necessarily a xianxia or a novel since they are mostly bad to be honest.

What I liked is that the protagonist is ruthless without being some edgelord, while not being a Mary Sue, he has clear advantages but that stop here.

So, recently, I have been reading the Barsoom series from Edgar Rice Burroughs and I couldn't help but notice the similarities and paralellisms between the Character of John Carter and some older conceptions of Hernan Cortrs.

Both Cortes and Carter got into a new world, were sorrounded by hostile individualds that they rallied together in order to defeat bigger enemies, a barbaric religion that demanded constant sacrifices for an idol and taught them the ways of compassion, love and honor, thus earning great renown and the affections of several women.

In some older portrayals of Cortes (Including his own Cartas de Relacion), he's shown to be daring, ambitous and stern, yet heroic, honorable and insanely lucky, much like Carter. Plus, now that I write it down the last name of both sound kinda similar.

Has anyone drawn similar comparisons to this one? is there some literature behind this?

In any case, it would be interesting to further look into the archetype of hero that Carter represents, and see if his portrayal is, in fact, informed by the stories of conquistadors.

But you know what? I never really got around to reading the novels. I read the first Horus Heresy and The Founding (Dan Abnett). the amount of crying in the thread after just one short OP was funny, especially since I never even responded to the thread (funnies was lots of projection of me being a failed author)
but I think the thread was deleted, RR doesn't want people to know how fake the reviews are and how much authors game the system

another problem is that low star reviews get fake reported and their automatic report review process is shit (I got a review with spoilers removed, even though there was a warning that review contains spoilers, meanwhile reviews with spoilers with no warning get left alone if they are positive)

ironically amazon and goodreads have better, more honest reviews (just mentally filter all the PC pissfits from soibois and all women reviews)

No, they just committed cultural suicide under Mao and their literature never recovered. They've had to start over from nothing. The censorship regime in China also prevents any real exploration of ideas, so stories are confined to vapid nonsense. Xianxia and Wuxia shit gets made because it has flavors of "traditional" Chinese culture mixed in with it, but only in the most superficial sense. It's basically China doing minstrel shows of their own culture because they have no direct connection to it.

I am ashamed to confess that I, an avid reader and fan of Conan (comic books), have never read Conan in prose, but I will, immediately after posting this, go on my bookseller and buy everything he has of Robert E. Howard.

Now, about the humanity having regressed viewpoint. I often am surrounded by art created a long time ago. The other day, for instance, I had in my hands a very old edition of Gibbon's The Decline and Fall, and I was seized by the following thought: can you imagine the work the man needed to perform to finish his masterpiece? Now, look at where we are now: info is all over the place, books are cheap.
This considered, think about what sort of books are being produced about, say, the same topic Gibbon wrote so eloquently and abundantly about...250 years ago. Look at the calibre of things produced/authored/thought about today, compare it to same things produced a long time ago?
It is correct to believe that the massification of information has not enlarged the with nor deepen the depth of the average person's intelligence.

Off i go to order some Robert E. Howard novels.

If you're looking at more SciFi methods, ayys (or the inhabitants themselves) erecting an orbital solar shield to reduce insolation and being unable to remove it/vastly underestimating the speed of the cooling chain reaction that resulted. Or a rogue planet being captured by the star and increasing the orbital distance of the planet in question (and fuck up the orbits of every other planet in that system too).

If you want to be boring about it and copy Earth, just the natural change in orbital distance of the planet, or a set of massive volcanic eruptions that pump enough ash and sulfur into the atmosphere as to drop mean global temps.

In the English realm, Romance sits at the top and DOUBLES the sales of sci-fi and fantasy, the second highest grossing genre.

Why the fuck basically all superhero web-novels immediately degenerate into alien wizard politics??? Fuck, the "hero" saves exactly zero people from supervillains, he immediately fucks off from Earth to hang out among alien wizard politicians. Are there ANY superhero novels where there's actually masked superheros against supervillains, without alien invasions, demon invasions, LitRPG, alien politics, etc?

Asimov read Gibbons and thought about psychology and the cyclical nature of empire and came up with some interesting space adventures with the dullest prose this side of Chalk. Fun stuff for a quick read, interesting showcase of mid-century sci-fi and how it was trying to transition from the pulp age.

it took me ages to finish bester's novel about some rich dude who wanted something done. shit, I can't even remember the plot already, and I read sometime this year: can only remember the use of different fonts.

now the other one was great.

what about Stand on Zanzibar? Earth Abides? any well-grounded opinions on these? I own most of the sci masterworks collections (bougt the whole of it for dirt cheap from a bookstore who was a week away from closing).
