"The Pool Of The Black One." It's really cool because the pirate ship actually leaves the map and sails to some alien land. Also I think the particular monsters in this story are fun, they have an alien intelligence that's delightfully sinister.

Also, Conan kills a guy in cold blood in this story, and that's pretty neat.

Same destination, different path; tends to happen when you're penpals. Howard liked the ancient stuff that has uncertain beginnings, letting him fill in the blanks with sinister monsters while contemplating the vastness of time. Lovecraft did the same, but liked to explore the greater implications. I do like Howard's more introspective works, even if he doesn't quite nail the execution, stories like Mirror's of Tuzun Thune and The Striking of the Gong. His horror is entertaining though. My favorite is Valley of the Lost.

Hour of the Dragon is a novel and re-uses/re-works parts from many of the short stories. A bit weak or disjointed in some parts (vampires) but still good though.
Xaltotun is one of the better Conan antagonists imo

I love how Conan just fucking hates wizards, magicians, and sorcerers and the STORIES hate them too. Every last one of them is a scheming, creepy, vicious asshole in all of Howard's stories. You are left at the end of every story completely understanding why Conan hates magic, and frankly, Howard exactly understands the kind of spiteful asshole who would b e driven to study magic in the first place. Both De Camp and Lin Carter are kind of weird. They did a lot to push Sword and Sorcery but were very clearly making a living off of other people's back. If you're that concerned though I'd recommend you get the Del Ray versions which release the stories in the order of and how REH wrote them.
