You'll probably get better answers from /co/, but I've enjoyed Persepolis, Habibi, Maggie the Mechanic, and Heartbreak Soup.

Anything by the Hernandez brothers, really.

>seconding this, because I hate when people try to fake an air of legitimacy by calling comics anything but.

At any rate, it's not very well known, but Moonshadow is really good. It follows the entire life of a boy whose mother was fucking nuts and whose father was a space alien or a god, I forget which. But the art is really good, the story is awesome. Pic related.

It's worth judging people over whether or not they enjoyed and appreciated this.

Read Bodyworld. Its book-form is fucking brilliantly presented, but you can also read it all online here:

It's brilliant. Trust me.

That.

Seriously, Moonshadow is one of the greatest comics ever written, I wish it weren't so expensive because it's something that needs to be owned.

Other than that, Cerebus (specifically the High Society arc), Starman by Robinson, Daytripper by Gabriel Ba, anything by Craig Thompson/Chris Ware/Daniel Clowes, I Kill Giants, etc.

Also, Enigma by Milligan should be mandatory reading.

I personally loved Maus and Persepolis, but those are really like intro level. If anyone's read graphic novels, they've read those.

It doesn't have "artwork" in the purely visual sense. It's not written in the literature sense of it either. It's a graphic novel, the greatest achievement is not in the drawings or the literary text, but it's merit relies on the visual narrative in itself. Did you read the manual?
