I feel like I need some companion book to truly understand what's going on. Is there any?

The Alan Moore introduction makes some sense of it, it's likely one man's personal kabbalah and inner psychodrama. In that sense, I don't think it can be understood or applied to your own experience. Since it is clearly esoteric, start by taking events at face value, saying what happened out loud to yourself, and seeing what comes to mind. Take the experience of reading it as the message of it. Other analyses would require keys to the symbolism or bring in too much outside conjecture, which I think isn't conductive to interpreting this kind of novel.

I don't know. There are some parts that I think resonate with me. I am very familiar with the biggest philosophical currents through history. The theme about the sexes is interesting, I'm at the part where they meet the guy from lichstorm, where the sexes are pure.

Only Lindsay's notebook would do you any good. If you read The Devil's Tor, near the end it explains a bit of the Gnosticism.
