Blood Meridian was the first McCarthy book I read back in Sophmore year of highschool. It was pretty good.

That's pretty young to read such a violent book. I read American Psycho in Grade 12 and BM when I was like 21.

Hey there partner. You can rape, kill, scalp, rob, and torture anyone you like. We only have one rule here: don't be racist to our black friend

I think it was more like the murderous rapist scalphunter was just looking for an excuse to kill someone, the nigger stuff was just an excuse.

you mean the evil child rapist was also portrayed as a racist?

But he also made a point of saving black johnson with the dakotas (I know it was because their fates were tied together by the fortune teller).

The point is that, even though it's historically accurate with the racism, it still has a prominent anti-racist message. That's the thing about subversive art, it starts as subtle. The simpsons were "joking" when they would take jabs at conservatism in the 90's. Now they're overt. South Park was "joking" about all the gay jokes. Now Trey Parker is out of the closet. Sarah Silverman and all jews were "joking" about all their anti-christian jokes. Now they don't hide it. Its just odd how racism is the one line they can't cross in this book.

Blood meridian does not have a prominent anti racist message. You are a rightoid culture warrior who saw that there was a black man in the story and started seething. Sad!

I read this recently after liking No Country for Old Men a lot. I came across a video essay about Blood Meridian and everyone talked about brutal and violent it was, but except for that one scene with the Indian child, there wasn't really anything crazy in there, certainly nothing worse than I've seen in other movies or books, but it's revered as this dark and unreadibly violent psychic assault for some reason.

We don't actually know that. Everyone in that scene is referred to as "the man" so it could be the missing girl who is in the latrine all murdered up and the man who says "I wouldn't go in there" could be the man (kid).

Your saying when the judge was waiting for the kid in the outhouse and embraced him nakedly, it meant that from then on the kid was going to become a child rapist?
