>I pray that the world never runs out of dragons.
>I say that in all sincerity, though I have played a part in the death of one great wyrm. For the dragon is the quintessential enemy, the greatest foe, the unconquerable epitome of devastation. The dragon, above all other creatures, even the demons and the devils, evokes images of dark grandeur, of the greatest beast curled asleep on the greatest treasure hoard. They are the ultimate test of the hero and the ultimate fright of the child. They are older than the elves and more akin to the earth than the dwarves. The great dragons are the preternatural beast, the basic element of the beast, that darkest part of our imagination.
>The wizards cannot tell you of their origin, though they believe that a great wizard, a god of wizards, must have played some role in the first spawning of the beast. The elves, with their long fables explaining the creation of every aspect of the world, have many ancient tales concerning the origin of the dragons, but they admit, privately, that they really have no idea of how the dragons came to be.
>My own belief is more simple, and yet, more complicated by far. I believe that dragons appeared in the world immediately after the spawning of the first reasoning race. I do not credit any god of wizards with their creation, but rather, the most basic imagination wrought of unseen fears, of those first reasoning mortals.
>We make the dragons as we make the gods, because we need them, because, somewhere deep in our hearts, we recognize that a world without them is a world not worth living in.
>There are so many people in the land who want an answer, a definitive answer, for everything in life, and even for everything after life. They study and they test, and because those few find the answers for some simple questions, they assume that there are answers to be had for every question. What was the world like before there were people? Was there nothing but darkness before the sun and the stars? Was there anything at all? What were we, each of us, before we were born? And what, most importantly of all, shall we be after we die?
>Out of compassion, I hope that those questioners never find that which they seek.

Looking for a novel and I can't remember the name. Haven't read it, but remember the synopsis - somehow (maybe wormhole?) people visit the future and find the Earth destroyed or depopulated with a single survivor in stasis on the moon.

>One self-proclaimed prophet came through Ten-Towns denying the possibility of an afterlife, claiming that those people who had died and were raised by priests, had, in fact, never died, and that their claims of experiences beyond the grave were an elaborate trick played on them by their own hearts, a ruse to ease the path to nothingness. For that is all there was, he said, an emptiness, a nothingness.
>Never in my life have I ever heard one begging so desperately for someone to prove him wrong.
>This is kind of what I believe right now… although, I do not want to be proved wrong…
>For what are we left with if there remains no mystery? What hope might we find if we know all of the answers?
>What is it within us, then, that so desperately wants to deny magic and to unravel mystery? Fear, I presume, based on the many uncertainties of life and the greatest uncertainty of death. Put those fears aside, I say, and live free of them, for if we just step back and watch the truth of the world, we will find that there is indeed magic all about us, unexplainable by numbers and formulas. What is the passion evoked by the stirring speech of the commander before the desperate battle, if not magic? What is the peace that an infant might know in its mother’s arms, if not magic? What is love, if not magic?
>No, I would not want to live in a world without dragons, as I would not want to live in a world without magic, for that is a world without mystery, and that is a world without faith.
>And that, I fear, for any reasoning, conscious being, would be the cruelest trick of all.

Just finished this, God what a book. Ordered urth and excited to read it. Plenty of things I must've missed tho. Was baldanders lead to design that 'perfect' humanity described by malrubius? Or what was he trying to achieve? What did Severian see in that mirror? I always theorized it to be an angel, but I have no real proof. Also, on the mirrors, since I didn't fully grasp exactly what they did. I assume the mirror lead to the corridors of time, allowing Hethor and Jonas to time travel and fetch creatures from other universes etc. but I'm not sure. Any nice anon who can spoonfeed my smooth brain?

Bait, but it blows my mind how there are literally people out there who instantly label anything they can't understand completely on the first read as pretentious. This goes for both Malazan AND BotNS, but for different reasons. No wonder those people typically never escape YA fiction to read classics; the average classic is way tougher to understand than any (most) complicated fantasy series, if only because they expect the reader to have at least some foundational knowledge about their topic and culture rather than creating one from the ground up and relating it to the reader in bite-sized chunks.

I've read the entire Morgaine cycle (4 books) and I felt really blueballed at the end. Morgaine and Vanye never do anything other than a single chaste kiss, and then the story stops. I find that CJ Cherryh has a writing problem where her stories don't end, they stop. There's no real conclusion, they just ride off into the sunset midway through an adventure and then there's no more pages to the book and you're left holding your dick in your hands wondering what the hell just happened. Fortress series is the same way. Her prose is generally excellent, as are her grasps of characterization and psychology, but after reading three entirely separate series of hers, I am wholly sick of this inability to provide conclusions AT ALL, let alone satisfying ones.

It's not difficult to read in terms of its language or the content of individual scenes, it just doesn't give you a lot of exposition to ease into the setting, so bigger questions about what is going on, or how things work in the setting, take a while for you to work out on your own. I find a lot of people who drop Malazan expect books to be more prompt and direct about explaining things to the audience, but Malazan doesn't bother.

For example, you will have, at best, a vague idea of how magic works for several books before you get anything close to a lore dump on it, only to later have that understanding pulled out form under you later.

what are some fantasy books with actual nice romance?
it's impossible to google this question because recommendations are trashy romance or really gay shit, and neither is what I mean
the Morgaine Cycle but with a satisfying romance arc would have ruled. surely something like that exists.

Dennis L. McKiernan's "Faery" series (5 books) is founded entirely on a more mature - though not subversively edgy or anything - retelling of classic fairy tales involving princes and princesses and suchlike. I would have loved to have kept them in my library but for the fact that McKiernan has this intensely obnoxious tendency to sprinkle gratuitous foreign - or fictional - languages throughout the text at every opportunity to replace a common word like say "oui" or "nest ce pas" or his horrendous conlangs in the Iron Tower: "my buccoes". He also has this tic of constantly phrasing sentences in "adverb-noun-verb" format like "Onward they rode", oftentimes in multiple instances in the same paragraph. These phony folksy archaicisms are so damned exasperating that no matter how good the books are I can't ever imagine reading them again. I'd only recommend him if you can tolerate that sort of spiel because I can't.

Lois McMaster Bujold is also pretty famous for writing effective romances in her fantasy novels.

The Changespell series by Doranna Durgin features a female horse falling in love with her rider after she's forcibly transformed into a human during a spell gone wrong.

You might also enjoy Orson Scott Card's "Enchantment", which involves a sort of isekai from 20th century America into 9th century Kievan Rus' in a retelling of Sleeping Beauty.

The Fionavar Tapestry certainly has a way with romantic relationships though they are quite bizarre.

It's a decent series. The first 6 are from ok to really good with a couple highly entertaining,l. The mystery is wrapped up in the 6th one. The 7th is boring slop, but he is advancing in age, so it's understandable.

QRD - a statue of an alien is found on Iapetus. Humanity hasn't found any lmao up to that point, so it's shocking. A mission is organized and flown with the purpose of finding the makers of the statue. They find other monuments in different solar systems. The mystery has a satisfying answer.

If you are into COMFY AF space adventure stories without leftist propaganda, you will like the series.

Back in the day I used to read a lot of fantasy. I want to start some thing new. Recommendations appreciated. Here's what I liked and didn't like before:

LotR - fantastic
Wheel of Tine - my second favourite, read it 5 times over to cover
Softwar - really cool, think I stopped after the third trilogy
The Runelords - great concept, becomes entertaining if you stick with it
D&D - several good standalones
ASOIAF - pretty good
Earthsea - enjoyable if you stick with it
Dresden Files - didn't think I'd like it, but I did. Stopped after 6 or 7 of them.
Discworld - funny and unique

Belgariad - boring trash for children
Sword of Truth - derivative and very meh
Malazan - absurdly incoherent trash that's needlessly convoluted. I'm not convinced the people who say they like it are actually real.

I tried the following in the last couple of months:
Kingkiller - didn't like the style or the settings. It was too un-fantasy for me.
Cosmere - I read 2 of them and although they were ok, I didn't like the magic systems and something about Samderson's style is off putting to me. I will not read more.
Prince of Nothing - convoluted and pretentious garbage on par with Malazan

I have the following bought and on my to-read list:
Black Comoany
First Law
Forgotten Warrior

What would you say? Any of those suitable for me? Something else to recommend maybe?

Honestly he doesn't have a single bad book, just a few that are weaker than the others. The best place to start is probably his Drenai series with Legend, but if you want something shorter than Rigante is a good place and if you want a standalone there's plenty of those too such as Dark Moon or Echoes of the Great Song. He's got some that are more historical thaothers like his Greek or Troy series as well and those that riff on myths like stuff about King Arthur and Jon Shannow set in a post-apocalyptic setting and is more of a western. He's even got two present day setting novels, one of which was published after his death.

The Well of Stars (its direct sequel) is one of the best sci-fi novels I have ever touched. I would strongly suggest finding a copy of the short story "Mere" before reading Well of Stars.
If you wish to continue reading beyond, I would read "The Greatship", a short story collection, and then hold off on the Memory of Sky trilogy. The trilogy and Dragons of Marrow seem to set up the finale moreso than being their own thing.

Vaguely, but not in a shitty way. It isn’t just ‘fantasy aztecs’.
The main culture definitely has meso ‘vibes’ but a lot of the substance includes Roman, Chinese, and Renaissance Euro influence among others. Inca too.
The gist:
>Main character is a noble who grew up in exile with his father, who didn’t really bother to drill in him the extremely violent and arcane social order of the empire they live in.
>Said empire, based in a metropolis called Osrakum, has a God-Emperor.
>Since the Emperor is dying the nobles are all summoned back home, including protagonist’s dad.
So the main deal - especially in book one - is our relatively ‘normal’ (by our standards) main character getting dragged to Osrakum and having to adapt to and learn to navigate the very dangerous / byzantine imperial society he’s been insulated from all this time.
High points are:
>good worldbuilding
>dinosaurs
>interesting theology / metaphysics
>good characters (though not as many as other, better series)
>really interesting social dynamics and ensuing political / body horror
None of this is a spoiler, all of these points are evident pretty quick. Just not how deep the rabbit holes go.
As discussed above the objectively evil, horribly decadent and nightmarishly violent nobility are ok with homosexuality so if you consider that an issue I might not read it.
Doesn’t come up much but apparently it’s what the review people obsess over.

Before 2015, the yearly Newfag Summer event was disaster season we had to weather, but eventually the newfags integrated into the 4chan medium without retaining their excessive redditisms. Unfortunately, we've been in an ongoing Newfag Summer without reprieve for the past NINE YEARS, thanks to the cancerous effect of twitter and the 2016 election cycle which mindbroke the entire world and every media corporation funding shills online in it. When 4chan was split into real 4chan and 4channel (with the accompanying separation of image hosing from i.4cdn to is2.4chan) this website lost all hope of recovery.

I am convinced that every single Bakkerdenier is so out of some insecurity or some sense of masculine crisis. They read the gratuitous male on male rape scenes where the alpha warrior, with fire and violence, take what is rightfully his, and they shiver, for they instinctively know their own role in such a predicament. But instead of attempting some sort of physical or psychological masculine change, they will instead choose to take the female route of prattle and attempts to slander. So they sit there on their dainty little hips, typing up some real meanie words on the keyboard with their lithe fingers, with a big dumb smile on their clean-shaven faces, in some pathetic resistance against having their unsullied butts raped by a greater, by their ubermensch, but that won't stop what's coming. Pathetic, really

I recently read all 6 Old Kingdom books + the short stories. Here's my shit opinions: (Don't read if avoiding any spoilers but I'll try and be concise
Sabriel - Very rough with a deus ex machina ending. The premise is interesting and the characters well-written which is what keeps ya reading
Lirael - This is most people's favorite book, and I can see why. It's over 700 pages so there's lots to sink your teeth into. The Library of the Clayr is arguably the most interesting place in the Old Kingdom. Definitely a stand-out
Abhorsen - Finishes up the series very well. There's several very off-putting otherworldly encounters and the last-minute saves actually work this time. Definitely should finish the series if you've come this far.
The Creature in the Case - This is book #3.5 which bridges Abhorsen and Goldenhand. This book is pure fucking ADRENALINE. Nix never wrote such a pure action story set in the Old Kingdom before or since. A must read even if you aren't interested in the rest of the series.
Clariel - this is book #4 but it's a prequel set 600 years in the past. For the first 1/3 or so it's kind of a slice-of-life showcasing the culture of the Old Kingdom, and I kind of like that. The last 2/3 are a character case of Clariel, how she is an outcast and her ensuing downfall. I really liked this book and it might be my favorite of the whole series just in terms of pure comfiness.
Goldenhand - Book #5 set directly right after The Creature in the Case. I won't say alot about this book but it really is very superficial and I didn't enjoy it at all. Not sure what Nix was going for or why he wrote such a mediocre book after having so much time to sit and think up a decent story. So far this is most current of the Old Kingdom books (as far as chronologically)
Terciel and Elinor - This is book #6, set a generation before Sabriel, and is about her parents and how they met. This one is a mixture of every book that came before it. Slice of life, lore, relationships, magic, Abhorsens, journeys into Death, and Mogget. If you've made it this far, why not? It's worth a read
The rest of the Old Kingdom books are short stories. There's Dr. Crake Crosses the Wall which you can read on the Old Kingdom website for free. It's pretty good. There's To Hold A Bridge which is in a short story collection of the same name. The whole collection was surprisingly good and also include a short story set in the Shade's Children universe which is also worth a read if you're into YA science fiction. Would recommend. There's also a little known short story published in the 15th Anniversary Edition of Sabriel called One Wyverly Summer. In this story Sabriel battles a free magic creature that strays too close to Wyverly School while she is a student there. Very rote and doesn't flesh out any lore or anything but might as well eh? I'm hoping Nix will write another Old Kingdom book set after Goldenhand that doesn't suck.
Enjoy Redwall anon

Seconding Thomas Covenant. The 2nd and Final Chronicles get so into the heads of certain characters is actually kind of un-real (like the last itself hehe)

the Zones of Though books are amazing. Read A Deepness in the Sky and you'll understand

I'm currently reading The Hollow Lands (Dancers at the End of Time book 2) by Michael More Cock.

Terry Goodkind was one of those obnoxious atheist ultra-libertarian objectivists who are so high on their own materialist farts they can't accept escapist fairy tales for their own sake, it has to has a material practical purpose (i.e. propaganda) which ironically makes it little different than the genre of "Socialist Realism" that infected the Soviet world. I mean seriously, the entire book series is a longwinded screed about Ayn Rand's politics that has magic and goblins in it.

Its just fun to read, i want see what happens next, i like all the characters and tgey have a good gang vibe, the romance isnt over the top and is only mentioned every now and then, i also like how the characters get older as the books go on and can follow what they are up to, for whats its worth i am a casual reader though so i dont make graphs of the lore or timelines, i read and have a great time, dont want it to be over
