23463128 No.23463128 [Reply] [Original]

Can anyone please recommend some books like Between Two Fires? Haven't been able to read since finishing it a couple weeks ago. Nothing i've picked up has filled the void.

>> No.23463143

do what I am currently doing: allow the void to exist so between two fires gets its due respect. begin reading again only once you've properly processed it.

His Black Tongue - M Luthi is fairly similar
there's a collections called Howls From the Dark Ages with an intro but no story by Buehlman; it's overall decent, some very good stories couple of duds

A little apples to oranges, but The Fisherman By John Langan. Has a nice mixture of historical fiction and apocalyptic horror.

People recommended The Stand by Stephen King but I haven't read that yet so I dunno

Vermis, by Plastiboo. Very atmospheric guide to a Dark Souls like dungeon crawler video game that doesn't exist. The art is phenomenal, definitely check it out!

not true but it's a problem they're pushed into the forefront. You still got CS lewis, Lovecrafts circle, Ray bradberry, and I wouldn't call hemmingway apart of either side. I mean Ernst Junger, Spengler, Tolkien, ezra pound, hesse, jung, F fitzgerald, McCarthy, and I don't know if you can stomach it the people that are centrist to not that political to begin with. If you think one of them here is somehow a "shitlib" like anyone contemporary now you're insane even shitlibs like orwell and huxley are pretty marginally different from those today and are actually hated by those today.

Book is nauseatingly shit. Couldn't even make it past the first page.

>> No.23468280

>>23466313
Same. Shelved at page 80 or so because...

• No attempt to render dialogue as anything but modern-sounding. Lots of modern slang that rips me out of the book.

• MC is just another Conan type. Too comic bookish.

• Extended 'fight scenes' very annoying. Shit's boring. Violence happens fast and brutally IRL, I like authors who work within that instead of describing an anime battle with words.

• Plot caught lacking. "Now we're going this way!" type story telling.

Damn I wanted to give that book a try but I recognize these points of critique too well, they always make fantasy unreadable.
Does anyone disagree with this anon? The setting did sound neat...

>> No.23468570

>>23468559
Same anon as made the comment you replied to, so no help with a 2nd opinion on Two Fires.

But if you haven't read Throne of Bones by McNaughton, or Mask of the Sorcerer by Schweitzer, they're ultra dank horror/fantasy tales. Jelly of anybody reading them for the first time.

It was those 2 authors that soured me to Two Fires by comparison, once I tried to read it earlier this spring.

Thanks mate I'll check them out.
Would probably have judged them by the cover if I came across them otherwise, desu.

I was going to order a second-hand copy on the basis of what I've read above, but you've convincingly made it sound utter shit. Shame, because the blurb sounds great.

>> No.23468868

>>23468280
These criticisms are just as trite as the book itself. Between Two Fires is dogshit because it has terrible prose and the subject matter is puerile. It's a books for tweens. Good literature doesn't need "non-comic bookish fight scenes" or "good story telling". This place has gone to hell, I miss when people at least pretended to like serious literature and gate kept dogshit genre fiction like this.
For the record, Conan an entirely higher caliber than trash.
