I read his Complete Cosmicomics, the first book of three was so fucking electrifying for the mind. Like talking to the old regular at the pub telling tall tales, but he's actually God.

The other two books, eh.

But the whole thing is on my re-read list.

if we could engineer a person with Calvino's love of life and Eco's erudition it would probably be the greatest writer the last 500 years have seen

yeah but his erudition focused on the earthy worldy stuff unlike Eco who wanted to push the plot to its limits (without being concerned with the actual "stuffing" that makes a world)
e.g. OP's book has 3 or 4 chapters that merit reading again and again and the rest are meh because the "glue" is not strong enough to bind them together; Eco had prime quality glue, only that the rest was like the mosquito in the amber (glue)
but what do i kno rite?

Calvino removed external contexts as much as he could, boiled everything down to what we have in common and used the tools of literature to their full extent to explore that. Eco never boiled anything down, everything is really complex and we don't really matter but there is still a good story in it and it is really complex. Eco requires erudition in what ever he is writing about, Calvino requires erudition in literature and all of its tools and devices.

Both are good and both are probably beyond you.

In his later works Pynchon never quite managed to reach the narrative verve that he did in V.. GR and AtD come close and at times exceed V. but overall fall short. Youthful folly has its advantages.
