How exactly did he survive without having any kind of full-time job?

He published a few short stories, did some shadow writing, but how does that afford rent, clothing, food, utilities, transport etc?

His grandpa was rich, and then he married a jewess with a good job. He was offered a full-time job writing, but he would have had to move to Chicago, which he categorically refused to do.

No, he moved to NY with his wife for a period, and was disgusted by all the miscegenation.

Fairly sure a lot of his income came from his wife's hat shop or mummy subbed him.

1. Family inheritance allowed him to live a comfortable middle-class lifestyle. Still he complained (and tried to kill himself) because his family lost the ancestral family estate.

2. He married a rich Jewess.

Rich white person lived in an age when they still did lines of credit against families. We take things like Mastercard or visa for granted, but that didn't exist so wire transfers and cash was it, and cash was dangerous.

He lived off his family and his wife's.

Also consumerism wasn't a thing, so he wasn't browsing stores buying useless cheap shit. Drip draining his funds. People bought what they needed for the most part.

I'm guessing he was like the prototypical Reviewbrah, with a little fandom, and then large fandom that paid his way for him since his particular eccentricities appealed to a lot of folx.

You didn't need a full time job back then
You just needed to do a job for a certain season and then spend the rest of the year leeching off your friends and family and not eating so much
