I just started Ivanhoe and this picture is on the cover, which seems to depict Brian de Bois-Guilbert, a Norman Templar. Not to be indelicate but, why is he black? Am I missing something? Aren't the Normans white skinned? Is "the Normans" more like a faction that can be joined? But why, then, does heritage seem to also be so important to so many character

The official description of the painting is "At the siege of the castle of Torquilstone the beautiful Rebecca, daughter of Isaac the Jew, is abducted by the Norman Templar, Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert." Why would it describe her as being abducted by the guy in the background rather than the dude who is literally holding her?
