What the fuck makes Arthur Schopenhauer so fucking smart?

I frankly can't see any reason for humanity even remembering the likes of him, or any of his ilk.

If just one of you limp-cocked, acne-riddled philosophy students could answer me that I'd stop beating you up.

I know it's a troll or meta or whatever but this quote made me start reading him. Heraclitus' idea of the world as Becoming always seemed to me like the most interesting thing ever to come out of Greek philosophy, but no one seemed to pay attention to it. I couldn't find anybody talking about it. Just so happens most of my favourite philosophers are Heracliteans, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Heidegger, even Spengler.

"The vanity of existence is revealed in the whole form existence assumes: in the infiniteness of time and space contrasted with the finiteness of the individual in both; in the fleeting present as the sole form in which actuality exists; in the contingency and relativity of all things; in continual becoming without being; in continual desire without satisfaction; in the continual frustration of striving of which life consists."

-- Arthur Schopenhauer, "On The Vanity Of Existence"

I visited his grave while I was in Germany last month.

Apparently, he was a huge asshole.

have you even read On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason? Of course you don't, dumbfuck. Well, the first part of the book, when hi critiques some of the most important philosophers of occidental culture there's a part where he explains a misinterpretation of Aristotle's "cause" and "principle of knowledge" by Descartes and Spinoza. Reading only that part you would realize how many times Schoppy intellectually beats your ass.

This tradition of philosophy, the one of Heralitus juxtaposed against Parmenides, is the truest tradition of philosophy. It's the core of Plato and Nietzsche's philosophy. What university do you go to?

My favourite part of "I don't get it" threads is the "I don't get it so it's wrong/stupid/shit" part.

I love it when Schopenhauer just starts spouting random insults against Hegel and the Idealists in the middle of his arguments.

I can't tell if you're ripping on me for stating the obvious, damnit. I'm a self-admitted dilettante, attending university next year, though for a history degree, not philosophy. Pretty sure academic/institutional philosophy in North America is completely analytic and Russell-y, which leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I made that post in earnest though. Sorry if it looked like I was being pretentious or tryhard. I was genuinely excited when I saw him mention "becoming without being", because it was the first time I saw someone acknowledge Heraclitus' view of reality. Of course I found Nietzsche later and was even happier.

or you could have avoided the mess by not using a slow-witted joke like "__ say's hi."

>>2339427
read more Nietzsche. He bashes on Shopenhauer, Socrates, Kant, etc. And not just their arguments, but their looks and stuff too.

>>2339433
i wasn't ripping. i was actually applauding you for stumbling on philosophy in the 'true' tradition, rather than the argumentative-reasoning on "issues" and individual philosophic problems contemporary scholars call philosophy today.

being closed-minded isn't a flaw. on the contrary: it's a blessing, if anything can be called such a thing.
