Iron Gold, Red Rising Saga #4 - Pierce Brown (2018)

Ten years at war have passed and little remains as it was, not only for the characters, but for the readers and author as well. The first trilogy was entirely the story of Darrow. It is no longer. He is now one viewpoint among four, all told from the first person perspective. Lyria is a Red disillusioned by broken promises and the trauma she's endured. Ephraim, a Gray, is a disaffected former member of the Sons of Ares who has turned to a life of crime. Lysander, the Gold exile, wanders through space without much purpose, until an opportunity arrives. How much each of these new viewpoints matter is arguable, though it seems inarguable to me to say that Darrow's narrative remains dominant. The new viewpoints are a welcome addition that I appreciate. I hope that it remains this way for the rest of the series. If this had remained solely Darrow's story I would've enjoyed it much less

Only ~40% of those who rated the third book rated this one, it's even less for /sffg/, and it's the lowest rated book in the series. It may be that many were satisfied with what they got from the first trilogy and didn't need any more. It also suggests that quite a few weren't pleased with the direction that Brown chose for the second trilogy, which is understandable, as much of it feels like a new series rather than a continuation. The first trilogy was about aspiration, revenge, and revolution. Despite all the terrible things that happened, there was optimism, confidence, and competence. Everything was much simpler then, including the characters and narrative. This second trilogy seems to be about the opposite in several ways. Those who want to continue to fully and blindly support Darrow may be disappointed or upset. After considering the reception that doing similarly in other series has received, it seems evident that turning against reader expectations for a character is a risky gamble.

For me the most interesting questions though are why these changes happened and whether I should accept them for for what they are. I wonder how much these changes are because Brown became better at writing, was unsatisfied with what he had written, and because this was the natural evolution of the characters and story. What's presented here definitely wants me to take it seriously, which isn't how I felt about the previous books, but I don't know that I should because that means I'd have to judge it in a different way. I don't know that Brown can quite live up to being judged seriously, though perhaps the following books may change my mind. I believe this transition to be a good thing, at least in terms of my preferences. The characters are more developed, the plot is more complex, everything seems more meaningful, and interesting narrative choices are made. However, it's also much less fun and ridiculousness I enjoyed is gone. It's unfortunate when technical improvement leaves readers behind.

They move at light speed so can zip into the particle accelerators, then troll some guy with numbers in his eyes, at seemingly the speed of light.

Also because Li is retarded, they could have just given every human an embolism simultaneously.

Or block out light on the planet by expanding to 3 dimensions.

Or defend against the threats of the dark forest.

Or stabilise their own solar system forever.

According to Li, a race of beings advanced enough to create deus ex machina machines are terrified of anything.

I am in the middle of a long fantasy series. 9 books are the main story, and 7 books are "side" books.
They go like this: 3 main > 3 side > 3 main > 4 side > 3 main
Technically, they are all sequels to each other.
I completed 6 main and went back to reading the sides I skipped. But it's literally torture reading them. The author tried too hard to push strong female characters. I want to drop them and go back to the main story, but doing so would mean I would miss important details on the main story.

are you retarded? darrow is one of only three people in this book that has their head screwed on straight. if you read this book and somehow came away thinking that darrow is a conflicted character then youre a fucking retard. he isnt conflicted, hes AFFlicted by his responsibilities that demand such inhuman sacrifices.

darrow is if not inspired by, then at the very least subconciously influenced by letoII and paul. the god of liberation cannot stand beside those he frees. the price of liberty is blood, and darrow spends it well because he's a fucking g.

Yes, I agree with you that some of the inspirations for Darrow are Paul and Leto. One of the primary differences is perspective and a difference in values. Every Dune book after the first shows that Paul isn't a hero and that most everything about his rise to power was propaganda. In the end, Paul ends up as almost nothing at all, wandering into the desert to die because of what he had done and what he saw of the future. The books show that genocide and war are bad. They don't glorify it at all nor worship him. Leto being a "god emperor" is a joke at best, especially considering his utterly humiliating death. Great books and characters, but certainly not anyone admirable, and they don't have to be.

For Iron Gold, the titular Iron Gold, Romulus Au Raa, commits ceremonial suicide. That's ridiculous and outside of the Rim it's rightly considered so. Darrow himself was going to commit suicide as well to blow some Golds up, merely as a pawn of the Son of Ares. Of course, it has its supporters, such as those who'd see Japanese ritual suicide as truly amazing. For Darrow, he explicitly states that his invasion of Mercury was a extremely idiotic strategic blunder and not worth the sacrifices it cost in the slightest. A lot of the book clearly presents Darrow as a great revolutionary, but once he's become the establishment he's much less useful. He completely fails to keep his impulses in check and knows it. He continually makes terrible decisions and his allies even tell him that, but he doesn't care. He doesn't spend blood well. Yes, the sociopathic and narcissistic model has its proponents here, primarily in those who see Xianxia webnovels with utterly amoral protagonists as the ideal. To a lesser extent this applies to the Bakkerposters as well. Overall, Iron Gold shows how compromised Darrow has become and that he's mostly propaganda, as was always intended. Darrow even says he's lost the boy he was. The Iron Rain was a mistake and the Senate acted correctly. The Senate made mistakes, but that wasn't one of them.

I've only read some of Dark Age, but so far all the utter disasters could've been avoided if Darrow hadn't acted on his own. The Storm Gods disaster seems to have been another bad decision, at least in terms of not committing genocide and having your allies be even more angry with you. Then there's the continuing trend of having to kill your allies, in this case, Orion.

In terms of the risky gamble, another example would be how at the end of the Game of Thrones TV series Daenerys just kills everyone and then is killed. .

Who else has their "head screwed on straight"?

I'm not going to argue with you. Most of it would be subjective interpretation of themes and motivations and blah blah but there is one thing you are objectively wrong on.

The storm god disaster was literally caused by Orion, after darrow trusted her to follow the plan. Yknow, Darrow not acting on his own? They were supposed to cause a storm that would knock out comms and make air travel dangerous.. They were not supposed to kill millions of civilians.. There's even a line beforehand about how most civilians would be able to avoid the danger (assuming they didn't go beyond first horizon). So this is just you, yes, making shit up...

If youre not willing to acknowledge that you got that wrong, then your reciews are worthless. So far as I can tell you rely heavily on interpretation, and regularly discount the face value of the books you review.

I mean for fucks sake this line?
>Iron Gold shows how compromised Darrow has become and that he's mostly propaganda, as was always intended
Is fucking absurd. Time and time again in Iron Gold we are subjected to Darrows internal monologue wherein it is explicitly shown time and time and time again that the only conflict in his character is that he cannot be both a liberator and a father. The Reaper is not compromised. And the fact that you wrote that sentence would have been enough to demonstrate how poorly you comprehend the books you read, let alone everything else.

That other anon was right, I thought he was exagerating but no. Your """reviews""" are SHIT.

>>23381314
okay but what you said happened literally didnt happen, get over it lmao.

>> No.23381451

>>23381403
Yes, Darrow putting Orion in that position was a mistake. He even says that she wouldn't have passed the psych exam unless the examiner had allowed for those results. When starting the Storm Gods up it's said that there's a 40% (2 million in 5 million) chance that they just explode and kill everyone. Darrow took that chance. He's reckless and assumes that things will just work out, most of the time anway. He's assumes that they'll just all die as well sometimes too.. He knew that there was a very high chance that Orion would go out of control. That's why there was a literally a kill switch. He used it without much hesitation at all because he was already mentally prepared to do so because he knew it was a likely outcome. Ultimately, the commander is responsible for everything they order others to do. That's how it works. If someone fails then that's the fault of leadership for assigning the wrong person. So, yes, Orion literally did it, but the fault is Darrow's. If you want argue that officers bear no responsibility for the actions of their subordinate then that's a different matter. Good luck finding military examples where that's not the case. I'm only responding to this because as you say, it's objective and you're wrong about whose responsibility it is.

I believe you entirely misunderstand what I mean by "compromised". That's about ideology. I didn't write anything about personal conflicts.

Just finished Dark Age. It's so much better. Easily the best of the series thus far. This second part is shaping up to be the closest I've read to A Song of Ice and Fire in space. Hopefully the the remaining two maintain this level of quality. I should have my full thoughts ready by the next thread.

I knew you'd like it, curious your thoughts on the Abomination seeing as that's a somewhat controversial plot point between readers. As for Lightbringer I wouldn't say it has the same incredible heights Dark Age had but its consistency is very solid with one of the series best duels (and imo in recent scifi & fantasy) and if you're an Atlas fan like I am you're in for a real treat.

I read the Foundation Trilogy a few months ago, maybe late last year.
It's very, very full of itself and self-congratulatory in a pseudointellectual fashion, meant to make midwits feel really smart when the comprehension of the transparently telegraphed plot twists settle in. It's written in a style halfway between the monosyllabic single-digit IQ style of Ernest Hemingway and the comically outdated high-falutin' technojargon of autistic silver age SF fans. It's enjoyable enough, but it's rather underwhelming, like a Michael Crichton techno-thriller without the thrills. If you treat it as essentially children's literature like The Wizard of Oz, you'll like it well enough.

The Abomination is definitely a questionable addition, if only because of the age. It's the sort of ridiculousness that I can go along with though. I feel like it's taboo more for authorial reasons than universe reasons. It would entirely change the setting if it were commonplace. My initial reaction was that it's hilarious. I can understand why it'd be controversial though since it's a slippery slope. There's a lot of stuff like that seems to have been added in just for fun. The Figment (she needed a upgrade to stay relevant I suppose), Fa, and some other stuff. I didn't think that Cassisus was dead, but that was certainly bit of a deus ex machina way to reintroduce him, which was fine. Atlas is one of the more interesting characters, so that's nice to hear. In terms of controversial, from a brief look there seems to be a lot more Lysander hate than I would've expected. Maybe he does a lot more in Light Bringer, the weapon better play a role, because as it is, it seems entirely unwarranted to me. I see him as another viewpoint with equal weight. That being said I'm impartial to all the viewpoints at this point. As long as it's fun and entertaining, I don't really care which wins in the end, as I think either way would be interesting.

>Minerva Wakes
Read this, very nice little portal fantasy, tightly written but I feel it could have used a bit more fleshing out to the fantasy characters who mostly take a sidestep to the family plot, though it is a good one.
>Birthgrave
Sort of weird, it's meant to feel like a sword and sorcery novel but at the end the plot twist is that the main character is an alien from another planet when humans from earth (who are more human than the humans of the planet they're on) beam her up to their saucer.
also the "motherhood" aspect is totally downplayed until the final book, when The mother and son - the two of which who are generally emotionally detached and callous to everyone around them - decide they love each other romantically and have sex, which may or may not be based depending on your preference.
>Gypsies
Very underwhelming multiverse thriller. The character relationships are handled quite decently, but the plot doesn't really go anywhere. It reminds me of some shitty horror books I read, but not genuinely bad, just bland.
>The Forgotten Beasts of Eld
Actual kino, solid 9/10 book. I've said this before, it feels like Lord Dunsany but actually good.
>Frostflower and Thorn
This adventure is much, much smaller scale than the blurb implies, it feels more like an episode of Xena Warrior Princess or Star Trek TNG (but fantasy) than an independent story, except there isnt actually anything else.

I want to write a fantasy epic. Can’t go into details because I’ve shared a lot of my work here before and I am a bit worried about this coming back to bite me if I ever get off my ass and finish the story.
My idea for the conclusion is it all is that after the [big bad] is defeated, his apprentice/second in command/maybe even son(?) comes to kill Protag years later. The protagonist knew this person years ago, back when they weren’t as set on this road. He feels pity that things have turned out this way, and challenges the guy to a fight. The protagonist has him outclasses, yet lets the guy win anyways, and he’s smart enough to tell that Protag let him win. Angered and having the Protag at sword point, he demands a fair fight. The protagonist refuses, tells him if wants to continue down this path he’ll have to learn what it’s like to kill people without honor. The dude is furious and kills him.
The end. But there would be clues and character development over the course of the story to make readers discuss whether the killer went on to be the new big bad, or if he ended up changing his ways out of remorse for killing Protag.
Thoughts?

There is no meaningful distinction between magic and technology and therefore likewise between Fantasy and Science Fiction, therefore I am totally indifferent as to whether the stereotypical trappings of one appear in the context of the other. All I ask is internal consistency. I don't want to see a 1950s space age moon colony utopia with rayguns and teleportation kingdom appearing 2/3 of the way into a medieval fantasy story with dragons and wizards, but this doesn't mean I won't tolerate necromancers and elves and dinosaurs in 1800s steampunk wild west America assuming these things are established from the get-go. Furthermore I have no problems with guns in a medieval fantasy setting as long as it's not multiverse hopping faggots whose technology suddenly stops working due to magic contrivances against iron or electronics or whathaveyou.

I was thinking about writing a scifi-fantasy story about people in a medieval period with aliens posing as literal gods amongst them. The ayys found a planet with a human colony and had it moved, decimating their history and understanding of how they got there. Now they do shit like have to file a request to their 'gods' to go to war among other things, and kings can receive threatening letters from their gods, telling them to stop stirring up shit. Maybe throw in some "magical artifacts" that give people powers, but they're really just insane technologies that humans can't comprehend how they work so it's the same effect. Genetic mutations? Could do some shit with that too.

Now, why is this happening? Because they're the equivalent of type 2 or 3 civilization alien teenagers/young adults that ran off and are doing the equivalent of cowtipping/ant farming with type 0 civilizations and/or are in some illegal type 0 civilization cockfighting ring. I thought it might be funny to even have an ending where they get busted and the humans are just entirely baffled at what's going on around them watching their 'gods' get arrested and sent to space prison. Or maybe it's something like Sand Kings where they bite off more than they can chew and get overrun and the story ends with the humans, now viewing themselves as space wizards, ending with them making a threat to destroy the worlds of the aliens that fucked with them.

You have to intentionally seek out others who have the same interest as you. It'll start as one-on-one conversations, but it can grow with time and effort. If you aren't interested in doing that, you'll have to take what you can get.

there really aren't any, almost everything in china goes through either websites like Jinjiang Literature City or magazine serialization. They don't have the same structure of publishing industry as the west.
