Breon Mitchell is what I read, and it was excellent in my opinion. My copy has the same cover as the OP pic. Mitchell actually includes a whole foreword about why the Muir translation is ass and how he remained faithful to Kafka's original style and phrasing, etc.

I'll be honest, I find the Muir translation quite dry. Their translation of The Metamorphosis is honestly one of the most diffiicult reads, despite its short length and subject matter, simply because of how boring the prose was.
Oddly, their translation of In The Penal Colony was very gripping. Maybe it's time for me to reread the short stories as an adult to be sure, before condemning their translations of all his work

It's basically just a representation of a confused world and the anxieties that stem from an endless bureaucratic system that is guiding K's life, seemingly without rhyme or reason, and the frustrations that it causes.
It's meant to be read more as a moral story rather than a traiditonal narrative, like much of Kafka's work, which if you haven't read I'd recommend his short stories. They're basically fables of the modern age, that follow dream logic instead of real world logic.
