Worldbuilding is a trap, anything more than "I thought it would be cool if..." is excessive

Worldbuilding starts to suck when you're so focused on one thing there's inconsistencies. Don't tell me "there's an energy crisis so people have to live in dense shitholes" and "people all run VR systems on the cheap" in one chapter.

I mean, Tolkien's stuff had a lot of excessive shit with whole histories and languages but it's basically "Middle Ages with wizards and orcs". The idea has to come first, anything else is just cleanup for inconsistencies

>it's like 1980s Britain but on a space station with robots
>it's America sometime in the early 21st century but high school girls fight to the death in latex bodysuits
>it's a world where people still send messages by pigeon but people have electric appliances

It's fun to write. That's why I do it.
