What makes it genuinely juvenile is the sense of detachment from real anatomy: at one point, watching a group of women at a distance, Severian says bizarrely, ‘One could see from the way these women held themselves that their thighs were as full as the udders of milch cows.’ Their thighs were full? Of what!?
