Thoughts on Twain?

The great American writer. He did more to shape American humor and folklore and culture than any other writer in America.

>Humor
Hes underrated in that regard. He is actually a very funny person.

His sketch on chambermaids is hilarious.

His jokes about religion were basically just hokum bullshit joking about greedy boisterous preachers and moralizing old ladies. He wrote a positive dramatization of Joan of Arc and the only time he really actively tore down a particular religion was Mormonism, which was already being picked apart and shit on not just by him but by literally everyone because it's fucking Mormonism.

I found his essay On The Art of Lying pretty disturbing. In high school, I enjoyed his work, but were I to return to it now, I don't know what I would think about it.

That's because that was the narrative of the subverts of the time. See H.L. Mencken, On Being an American. There is always an angle and always a narrative for that angle.

Also, see A High-Toned Old Christian Woman by Wallace Stevens. That general arc of time had several subvert narratives running. The "hokum" was one of them.
