I unknowingly trashed a short story I read to a group where the author was present. He got visibly sad and I had to explain that it was only a personal preference since I'm on the spectrum and thus find stories with deeper themes convoluted and hard to understand. It wasn't even a deep story, it was some shitty reminiscence about some dog he had as a kid that choked on an hard boiled egg and died.
