Let's discuss Faust. . . Can you sell your soul and in return get whatever you want?

The entire point of the Faust legend is that it's not worth it. Faust sells his soul for endless power, lifelong youth, and vast knowledge, but fritters it all away doing trivial things, and in the end he gets dragged to Hell.

Faust is an illustration of the famous line from the Gospels: "What does it profit a man, to gain the whole world, but lose his soul?"

Of course Goethe's Faust misses the point of this, probably because Goethe wasn't much of a Christian. Marlowe's play is the more faithful version of the story.

Tell me that you read Faust without reading me that you read Faust.
He doesn't sell his soul, he just makes a wager with the devil that if the devil will cure him of the depression of not understanding the world, through worldly means, then he will be the devils servant for eternity. Meanwhile while he is alive the devil is his servant. (actually it is a but more complicated than this but you guys won't ever read Faust so it really doesn't matter)

I prefer Daniel Webster style on the idea where the person is competing with the devil to prevent losing his soul.
