If you have more space, consider finding some Reader's Digest editions of classics. They are all hardcovers and usually contain either watercolor or pencil illustrations. They go for $1-2 in my local area, so maybe things might be similar for you.

some of the books they pick for the collection are blatant pandering to consumerist nerds like their Star Wars and Indiana Jones compilations, with obnoxious cover art clearly meant to sit on a shelf next to a Funko Pop instead of being read
the ones the dude has of Greek mythology, Scandinavian mythology, Irish folk tales, and Chinese mythology are all mint. The Greek one in particular looks like they look a vintage pre-digital printing and rebound it, it's weirdly high-quality. Same with B&N's version of The Godfather.

2) There is absolutely no reason why a book has to be abused during its reading. It is completely within your power to read a book, put it back on the shelf, and have it appear as though it had not been read. Conversely, it is possible to buy a used book at Value Village and put it on your shelf, having pretended it was read.

yeah the only redeeming feature of The Flood were the invented storylines by the author to pad out the narrative. specifically two narratives, one following the Marines as they make a base and try to hold out (while the master chief is off actually advancing the plot); and the other following Zamamee the elite who is trying to kill the master chief or whatever. Recently moved out for the first time and across country, but got rear ended like 10 minutes after starting the drive and it fucked up my trunk so I had to leave basically all my books aside from what I already had in the backseat. Had a good few Franklin Library books and a ton of random shit, since this is /lit/ and not /a/ I won't bitch about the comics or manga I had to leave too, but this is what I got after basically starting over. Paradise Lost, Clockwork Orange, and Fear and Loathing I packed with some of the manga I did end up taking but the rest I basically got new when I moved out here. There's like 3 used bookstores within 30 minutes of my new place so it's been nice trying to rebuild muh collection. Eventually when my mom visits she's gonna bring all the stuff I had to leave behind but until then I'm happy with what I got.

>> No.23265371

>>23265303
Yes. It's neat. For quality Johnson's actual writings on the Scottish trip are nicer. Overall it's probably not worth the read. It's more of a 'drop into' book whenever you want a taste of The Georgian Literary scene. There were some notable things, though:
Boswell's strong defence of slavery is amusing.
Johnson's profound terror of death, and his grim last years are sad.
His summation of his view's on life, near death, by quoting the Milton Satan's views on the sun (my favourite): 'How I hate thy Beams'.
Amongst their close clique their is is concurrence that life is mostly unpleasant and, offered the chance to live theirs again, would refuse. For me noteworthy was some random middle-class lady saying this. It's a good reminder that we shouldn't catastrophise about how shit life is. Others have felt it too, and plenty of the hum drum at that, whose declamations certainly don't merit memorialising.

My favourite though, which I still giggle over, is some random's comic lyric about another. I don't even remember the lines, but the original is an Irish poet asking whether one day his native city will be remembered as his birth place. Something like 'will they remember which from thee springs?' To which the satire runs: they will, for 'over on yonder tree his carcass swings'.

Read any of the Giorgio Vasari?

I confess to not being huge on the Renaissance, but I'm curious about this particular one: is it just autistic artsy stuff (not so interesting to me) or more of a tour de force In search of lost time stlye thing that summarises an epoch?

I had an abridged version before so I’ve read some of them. It’s probably not for you as it is extensively focused on artists and their art in a brief way. Often it is fairly dry but a good look at the renaissance art. It is a seminal text in art history which is the main reason for Vasari’s Lives’ lasting fame. That era was a fascinating time IMO. I’ve read Burckhardt, Pater, and some others over the last year, and Cellini’s autobiography is one of my favorite books so I wanted to fill in some of the blanks with Vasari when it comes to art. It definitely isn’t a book you read cover to cover though. Even though it’s dry and Vasari has his biases it provides an impressive overview of art in the renaissance and how those guys lived their lives and how their careers progressed. Many of them are short ~10 page bios

Thanks. Pity it doesn't sound like something I'd like; don't suppose you'd know anything like that? I mean, it could be a modern history, but I mean something like how Casanova's autobiography really gives you the feel of how the 18th century was actually lived.

I love Everyman too, btw; literally just bought that new Byron (I've read some of his poetry already).

Yeah I love Casanova’s book too. He makes Venice seems like such an isolated exotic place: gondolas across the water, masks, the feel of secrecy and secret societies, etc. Casanova is known for his love intrigues but I found his wit, daring and intelligence to be the main draw. It’s easy to see how he got women. With those types of books I’ve always loved comparing the economics for how much various things cost relative to current times.

It might be outdated but maybe look into Burckhardt’s table of contents. It is a much bigger overview of society, culture, politics, etc. I’d also love recommendations as there is a ton out there so I’m not really sure where to go. Have you ever read Cellini? His personality turns some readers away but as an author he is one of a kind, no character like him. As an artist in the renaissance he gives a good feel of how things were for an artist and the politics of the time

Good enough. You know what a clusterfuck 40K universe is. Read Horus Rising by Dan Abnett. It's the first book of the Horus Heresy (in 30K), which narrates the event that basically shaped 40K. It's a long series that a lot of writers contributed to (top two shelves of the earlier image) and there are good ones and bad ones and also ones that you can wholly skip (almost no one reads the entire thing anyway). You can look up whatever term or character online that sounds new to you, though since you don't know too much about 40K I would advise you to not get too spoiled on major characters/events. Half the fun is contrasting 30K and 40K and the other half is finding out what happened to whom in detail. If you like Horus Rising, go ahead and read the second and third entries. They conclude one storyline that the rest of the books branch off of. After that it's a free for all on what you pick. There are tons of guides online by which to choose better written/story-essential books in the Horus Heresy, or you can just select some of the oft-recommended titles from the 40K era.

Like you said, don't expect excellent writing, but it is indeed an entertaining setting to get immersed in.

I’m a different anon, but you should really read Pepys if you’re into diaries. His petty bourgeois lifestyle makes a really nice counterpoint to the manic romanticism of someone like Cellini, although he really did live through some amazing things (plague, fire, restoration) and was also a serial philanderer. Whenever I see someone with an Apple watch I think of Pepys, an early adopter of the pocketwatch, so entranced that he just stares at it for entire carriage rides.

Yeah, Pepys (and Evelyn) are on my radar. It seems the former greatly outshines the latter so I’m assuming Pepys is the better place to start. I think what’s held me off is that I’m not too knowledgeable nor interested in that period of English history. That will probably change though as I never thought I’d be interested in 18th century Venice

I’m reading Cardano’s book now and it’s strange, not a typical autobiography. He breaks it down in 1-10 page sections describing various things, like one section is friends, enemies, health, appearance, etc, and it’s not chronological. Despite living in such a vibrant time there is no way I’d want to live then. It was dangerous and unhealthy. I’m sure Pepys will portray a similar “dangerous time”, Cardano almost died a bunch of times from diseases and illnesses, he had physical deformities, was almost crushed by buildings and roofs collapsing, drowned by falling into canals, attacked by stray dogs, poisoned by colleagues who wanted his teaching position (wtf?). I’m guessing Pepys portrays a similar time with the plague and fire? Life was pretty precarious for much of history

A fair warning: Don't read more than the first one or two books. It's surprisingly terrible with poorly written characters, bad dialogue, contains an actual mary sue that people delude themselves into thinking they aren't one (Which tends to be the same responses as people who think Katara [Different series] isn't a mary sue), and so utterly repetitive.
Quick note though: If you like feminist theory and marxist drivel, you'll enjoy book 2, and likely won't be able to recognize the problems I'm pointing out so you'll likely enjoy the entire series.

The books other than the Holy Bible are cautionary tales of specific expanded 13 deadly sins I call the 13 beasts. This is to imply they're neither right nor wrong just things you have to survive or adopt.

You don't need the internet to use the device at all and in the event of a blackout it will still function just fine. Also a normal book wouldn't be able to be read in the dark, but an ereader can.

I kept staring at the spines trying see what authors names could fit just by length and structure. Almost like Morse code. Eventually I thought I could recognize 'H. P. Lovecraft' on the last book. That was the key. But since that Anon is Spanish the books were likely to be in Spanish. Lovecraft's most famous work? The Call of Cthulhu (SP: La llamada de Cthulhu). Does it fit? No. Next most famous book? Probably At the Mountains of Madness (SP: En las montañas de la locura). Does it fit? Yes. That was 1 out of 5. Since all those books have the same design, I assume they belonged to the same type of collection. If they have Lovecraft they're likely to have other genre works. I know the usual classic authors. So I did sort of the same for all the others, just intuition when it comes to Spanish titles and what could fit. Unfortunately I haven't been able to track down those specific editions but I'm 100% sure those are the books.

pretty based miller anon, is sayings of the desert fathers, a work a non-christian can appreciate?

I saw someone make a thread on it, last year, and the weird name of the book stuck with me ever since.

I have two books coming soon.
One is 'green henry' by gottfried keller, nietzsche apparently liked this book a lot.

And, I haven't read Rabelais yet, but i found a cheap copy of 'Rabelais and his world'. You and other people here talk about it in high regard, so i figured i'd have to track it down eventually anyway.

Also, stupid question really. How much time in a day do you spend on reading? and is your internet usage only limited to /lit/.

I am a zoomer, but i have worked really hard, and have reduced my internet usage to not more than 30 minutes. But I feel i can't bring myself to read for more than an hour a day. but I guess that's juts the zoomer brain is kicking in,
