Paying for scalps is one of the stupidest ideas in the history of making money. How did no one think "wait, how do we know these scalps belong to the people we wanted them to kill?" Not only did mercenaries pass women and children's scalps off as braves, they would take extra-big scalps and then cut them in halves and quarters to inflate their number. They did this shit for DECADES and the people dishing out cash for scalps never caught wise.

I remember listening to some Librivox audiobook about an old man, a trapper, helping a family settle in the dakota area or slightly more south while combating indians and mean cowboys. It was really comf and balanced in its depictions. Though I can't remember its name nor the author sorry about that. But I recommend it nontheless!
