Books about this phenomena: people have much stronger feelings about 19th, 20th, and 21st century figures like Marx, Stalin, Mao, Hitler, Bush, Putin etc. compared to older figures like Napoleon, Alexander the Great, Martin Luther, or Joan of Arc? They sort of just accept the latter ones and what they stood for, even though they could be ideological opposites, and "it's just history" or even a part of a nation's, continent's, or humanity's culture and identity. But the former group they either worship or think they're literally the devil incarnate, there's almost no in-between. People seem to stop moralizing when it comes to older figures. Does nuance just disappear the closer you come to the present? What's the deal with that?

Why would someone have stronger feelings about a figure that still has clear direct impact on your life and the world?

It's not. People feel more strongly about others who have a direct impact on their life, as >>23253066 said. The farther geographically, genetically, and temporally removed a person is, the less likely you are to care about them, or even know who they are.

How do you feel about King Gudea of ancient Sumeria?
>exactly

I think part of it has to do with morality being different. In the ancient world it was seen as noble to conquer and subjugate another nation, whereas now that is deemed colonialism.

>direct impact on their life
But that's just false. Hitler and Stalin have just as much of an impact on your life as Martin Luther and Napoleon: none. So why the strong feelings about the former but not the latter?
