What's the consensus on the /lit/ philosophy project pdfs on the wiki? I want to use it as a guide to read more of the existentialists but don't really understand if the "secondary reading" is meant to be done first or after you read the primary works. When some of them are biographies, some commentaries, etc. What do?

>> No.23252554

>>23251554
It's a good list overall, very detailed despite some bias, speaking as someone who started with it quite a few years ago and has been studying philosophy formally and informally ever since.

The main list is the primary literature which you should read - the secondary lit is just an assortment of different texts that you can personally decide to read first or after, depending on whether you want a summary/some historical context for the author beforehand, or whether you want to dive deeper into different intepretations after reading the primary literature.

Some good sadness here but it's such a big topic there's plenty more, e.g.
Something Happened (Heller)
Kolyma Tales (Shalamov)
Tobacco Road (Caldwell)

"The Road" is certainly not the right Cormac McCarthy. In fact I would say it's his most optimistic book. Yes, the setting is grim but the ending is moderately upbeat, almost uniquely for him (Suttree being the only other example). Outer Dark is a much better choice.

Hamsun's "Hunger" is another one with a (tentatively) upbeat ending. You get the feeling the MC's life might be about to change for the better.

Tess of the D'Urbervilles is more "classic tragedy" than pure "depression-lit". It's sad but also cathartic. Something like
The Sound and the Fury (Faulkner)
is a better fit I think.
