It depends where you are, they've actually made some progress on this one recently. Recently certain jurisdictions have come around to the fact that balanced literacy (trying various methods) just doesn't work, and phonics just fucking does, and are re-tooling teaching guidance/expectations accordingly. The key is for the student to realize that the concept or idea itself, the spoken word denoting same, and the written word denoting same are all "the same thing", more or less. Of course, all this is ultimately for naught when Quantavious is the student, but even he can pick up on things a bit faster with phonics as opposed to other approaches.

Sure, there are differences between individuals, and obviously, statistically speaking, there are probably a couple white kids who are illiterate. But literacy has been functionally 100% for white people for many, many years, and I have not personally ever encountered an illiterate white kid. lol did the people replying to this just come from Reddit? They should read the salo post about teaching black kids. From personal experience (Chicago public school) I can attest that they're awful. I remember the gifted kids were like 90% white in a ~40% white school and so the program got shut down for raycism. Black kids constantly fought the teacher, threw chairs, got into fights in class. Schools are staffed mostly by libtard whites or blacks, and both will cover for the worst of the worst black kids. I teach at a big R1 university and for essay assignments, both research papers and smaller reading responses, I include a requirement that they must critique or otherwise object to the authors they are discussing (that way it's not just a big summary for the full paper). Super simple essay structure: intro -> brief summary of author's position -> implications of the position -> criticism/objection to author's position -> overall evaluation. What I notice from all students is that they cannot wrap their heads around bringing up an objection or criticizing what they read. As soon as they read something, they just believe it is unassailably true. I've had dozens of conversations in office hours with students asking what I mean when I ask them to come up with an objection to something they read. "Do you agree with the author? Does something seem wrong about what they said? Explain what seems wrong to you." Blank stares. At least this is limited to the really low level intro courses; things are better for the classes that have prerequisites.

A lot of undergrads come into college lacking in analytical skills. They don't know how to read a book, the basics of logic, or how to formulate an argument. Colleges don't bother teaching these skills either. One thing I've seen are students regurgitating bits and pieces of academic writing almost like a chatbot. i.e. they'll tell you something is essentialist, but when you ask them what essentialism means or why it's bad they can't really tell you or they'll churn out phrases like "hegemony" or "lived experience" but don't really know where they come from or what they mean. Some of the younger Gen Z kids really don't like their preconceived opinions being challenged and will get hostile and there's this sense that debate is a bad thing. I had a really nasty experience in class when I was pointing to some of the problems I have with Judith Butler which led to a student accusing me of being a transphobe and derailing everything. When asked how she couldn't really explain and just defaulted to her emotions and how she felt uncomfortable. It wasn't even a harsh criticism and had nothing to do with her work on gender.

Social media has really transformed the way people engage with written content. Its more fleeting, less analytical, and more like consumption and people hitch themselves to certain trends or ideas in a way that's very performative and disingenious. People don't sit and think anymore. Its all about dogmatic alignment and consuming infotainment that reinfroces your existing worldview.

Basically every single respectable study that has come out in the last two decades supports the idea that genetics play a much, much larger role than we thought and that we were massively overestimating the importance of socio-economic factors. Just make plans to stay somewhat mobile and have some assets / skills that sell in any economy so that you can sense where the winds are blowing and get the hell out of dodge whenever things get bad. You can always up and relocate to some other small city or state. That sounds unappealing now but when the difference is between the city you're in, which has 3-4 George Floyd / '92 LA Riots per year, and struggling to prosper in some rural area but at least having a guaranteed roof over your head and food on the table, you will appreciate the simple things.

I tutor my girlfriend's sister, 7, and she's hardly literate. They transitioned to teaching English phonetically at some point and it's crippled students.
I became concerned when I realized her reading homework was little more than counting: "1 apple, 2 apples, a bag of 3 apples..." Are you a dunce? Black schools in impoverished city neighborhoods have 500x the budget other schools get. Interesting that you mention the STEM zealots, because one of the worst places this is true is the military. I was enlisted, but worked a lot side-by-side with officers of various ranks in my job. Now I’m in college and toying with the idea of commissioning, but the bizarre hard-on every service branch has for STEM degrees is tripping me up. Yes, I suppose a nuclear engineer officer on a submarine should be STEM, but for the majority of officers, their duties are personell management, tactical decision-making, contingency planning, leading the enlisted, and logistics. None of those require advanced STEM study, and in fact I have argued before that a comprehensive study of the humanities and liberal arts (in its original definition) would actually create a better officer than another compsci drone. I would bet money that an officer who had to, say, read and debate Thucydides and Plutarch, or compare and defend Kant vs Aquinas, would make a much more capable and well-rounded officer who could adapt to virtually any role the military wanted him to be. I’ve literally worked with field officers who, in wargaming exercises, were astounded when an enlisted colleague and I copied Walter Model’s concept of elastic defense and fire brigades, like it was some alien concept. Do they just not read history books? Our overconfidence in technological superiority is going to bite us in the ass in the next war if we keep maintaining an officer corps of midwits who can’t think critically or understand how their work fits into the big picture.

Here's what I think the problem is from overhearing secondhand stories of people I am not involved in teaching myself but know peolpe who are involved in it I'm UK based but it seems liike we're having the same issues as America.

I think it's because the traditional nuclear family is pretty much dead or slowly dying whatever way you want to look at it. Ask yourself next time you go into your job how many of the kids acting up are from single parent backround, with no father figure around, and a mother living on benefits? She doesn't care about teaching them anything when she is more than likely getting railed by Chads, or Brads off of dating apps. There's no strong white male role model anymore left for younger people to look up too, they just want instant gratifaction, or validation while getting rich through the easy methods possible without any real lack of discipline or hard work being put into it.

You could blame phones I guess. It's an easy answer but I don't think that's the root cause of the problems, I'm also pretty sick of seeing mothers push their kids around in a pram while they are glued to it not taking their eyes off the screen, or lazy parents using tablets, or smartphones as a way to stop their kids from acting up whenever they can't be controlled. It' just all around shitty parenting mixed in with shitty teachers who aren't seen as threatning anymore because the kids are allowed to walk all over them.

Partly I blame the welfare system too because it phased out the need for a father figure at home. Why should there be a dad involved now when the state, and single mothers could just raise them without any influence from them.
