>Feist has acknowledged that the Tekumel setting from M.A.R. Barker's Empire of the Petal Throne was the source for much of Kelewan. The original Dungeons & Dragons campaign which he based his books on had an invasion of the Midkemia world by Tekumel. As a result, much of the background of Kelewan - the Tsurani Empire, the lack of metals and horses, the Cho'ja, the pantheons of 10 major and 10 minor gods - come from Tekumel. Feist claims to have been unaware of this origin when he wrote Magician.
But wait a minute Barker was a nazi, does that mean...?

Dianetics is mostly standard self-help with buzzwords that would have sounded shiny and chrome in 1949 but come across as very "silver age" now. You are better off just reading some Buddhism and Crowley if you simply want to be titillated by the mythos/lore, since that is where he cribbed the majority of it from.
That said, I really enjoyed Battlefield Earth as a throwback to what Hubbard calls "Pure Scifi".

I honestly don't know if we read the same book anon. I found the king of elflands daughter to have some of the most beautiful writing and language I have read across all of the genre. I'm not near my bookshelf or I'd grab my copy and quote some of the passages I bookmarked. I can understand where you're coming from with Tolkien, however. I thought The Silmarillion had 'prettier' writing than Hobbit/LotR, although it's hard to know how much of the actual prose/language itself was revised by Christopher as its all compiled from notes iirc. I haven't got around to reading the other Tolkien stuff yet.

It's been a while since I read it too. I just found myself thinking about it again, the ending in particular. As Yatima reaches the end of ver journey, having "climbed" trillions of dimensions upwards to reach undisturbed space and finally witnesses the monument to the transmuters, a cross dimensional "sculpture" going through every universe ve passed through and the final form is a being extending its arm into the unknown. It was such poignant moment, I was genuinely moved to tears by it. Something about the sheer scale of the entire journey and how it ends on such a hopeful note really spoke to me. I've talked to other people who have read it and there seems to be many different reactions to the ending. Personally I think the ending is a bit too much like an orgasm after an extended bout of intellectual masturbation (I don't consider this a bad thing, just too much of a good thing), so I can certainly can understand your emotional reaction. Diaspora was the first Egan novel I read so I was probably too harsh at the time and didn't fully understand which he was going for. Since then I've read most of his work and I think I have a better idea. I agree that it's more of a hopeful ending than not and disagree with those who claim the ending is suicide and nothing more than that. Regardless, it's a good thing that you feel so strongly about it, that's what something you enjoy ought to do and it's unfortunate you don't have someone you can truly express it to.

Publishers are killing their midlists and destroying all lower than than mostly so it's worse than ever for traditional. Gone are the 3 book contracts. If your first book fails to do well enough, you're gone, even if you had planned it to be more. Many of the big SFF publishers are increasingly restricting who and what can be published.

The Webnovel problem is that its extremely saturated and those that pay seem to only want very specific niche content and anything that strays away from that is almost surely doomed to failure.

So, really, it's a pick your poison situation of choosing between two that will almost surely kill you regardless. Statistically, women write better male protagonists than men write female protagonists, at least in my experience. I presume the reason for this is because no man will ever EVER fathom what goes on in a woman's mind, whereas there is a certain group of insightful women who can lay bare the inner machinations of the male brain more incisively and succinctly than men themselves will care to admit. I do not pretend these women are the rule; most women writers are vapid pea-brained narcissists who do not even begin to think that men have meaningful thoughts or feelings at all, but when you have a good one like Lois McMaster Bujold or Francine Rivers or Rosemary Sutcliff who not only strives but succeeds to understand the male psyche and its value, you can get good male heroes from them. The best male writers sensibly avoid writing female protagonists and busy themselves making worthwhile male ones.

Djinn City, Djinn #1 - Saad Z. Hossain (2017)

This is the first book of four in Hossain's Djinn universe, along with four works of short fiction. I started with the second published book and then the fourth, so reading the first was an interesting experience because much is explained about the Djinn that isn't repeated again. Now that I've read all four books, I know that despite being described as standalones, the order in which they're read does matter, but not to where you must start here. Chronologically the next book is Cyber Mage. Each book is different, so if you like one you may not necessarily like the others.

I believe that one of the most important functions of writing these is to give the reader an idea of whether this would be something they'd be interested in or if they're wasting their time. How a story ends can be very important and may ruin everything that came before for some readers. Djinn City has an abrupt ending that's also narratively complete. If you need closure and resolution, you won't find it here. Even if you read everything currently in the setting there remains a few unresolved storylines.

This is a science fantasy tragicomedy with a considerable amount of social and political satire. The story is mostly set roughly around the time of its publication, 2017, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. There are several other places visited, but everything revolves around Dhaka, which happens to be where the author lives. The fantasy mostly comes from the djinn, which aren't the standard sort, and the fantastical things they do to stay amused. Science fiction is presented through the Djinn as well, who have quite advanced technology, though also through some lengthy infodumps. The satire seemed to be more of a general sort rather than needing to know Bangladeshi cultural references or similar. The comedy tends towards the dark, absurd, and wry with a bit of meta.

There are three viewpoint characters. Indelbed, a young boy of who wants much more out of life than what his father allows for him, though that soon becomes the least of his suffering. Kaikobad, his father, explores the deep past of Djinn history. Rais, his adult cousin, learns that Djinn exist and devotes his life to be being involved with them as much as possible, which leads to adventure. How this book ends each character's story could've definitely have been more satisfying, but I also believe it to be a bold choice. I wouldn't want it to be common, though it's fine to read a few that end this way.

The plot is that the villain, a djinn, wants to kill a lot of humans without them having any idea it's anything other than natural disasters literally because of lore reasons. Djinn culture is complicated, though ancient Roman concepts are a primary influence, and they're extremely litigative. There's a lot of questionable narrative choices and flaws, but how everything is executed and written is quite agreeable to my preferences.

Rating: 4/5

Is this just a manifestation of the upwards trend of short-term greed brainrot, squandering their supply chasing best-sellers, or something else?

So you have to break into around the top 50 or so to be making a very modest living, not counting anything you make putting finished books behind a paywall.
Still seems more viable than traditional to me, since the writing skill floor is fanfic-tier and discoverability seems organic and with minimal advertising/networking required on key sites. The main barrier is finding an autist-desired subgenre you can stomach pandering to.

eh i liked it but at the same time i didn't care much for it. i think it was trying to be too deep for its own good, unironically.

i think i don't like john crowley. i tried reading Little, Big, but dropped after being a third or so into it even though i recognized that the prose is fantastic, and i really liked the beginning. and right now i'm reading engine summer and it's the same, good prose and all but i don't think the concept is very engaging and at the same time it takes itself too seriously. i think this one i will finish though

There are several new publishers who are trying to disrupt publishing by giving the authors a far higher share of earnings, but they only want established authors who will almost certainly earn them profits and be successful. Because these big names subsidize every other author at regular publishers with the hopes they get a hit, they are also moving more towards this model. As a result they no longer have the desire to hope for hits and want more likely hits, such as whatever the top thing on social media is, usually TikTok. Having an already established fan base means a higher chance of their debut book succeeding. If it doesn't, they're dropped, as with much else. This is also similar to the model Netflix is using now for new shows, in that if it isn't successful right away it won't be getting a second season.

A lot of it is identity politics, that can't be helped due to the demographics of those in the publishing industry now. That may be starting to relent though based on the what I've seen and read about though. However, it's also about sales. If female authors writing for a female audience sell much more than male authors for a male audience that's what will be published. I wouldn't bet for identity politics winning against profits in the end.

So, yeah, overall self-publishing is the more likely bet for genre stuff. I don't know about literary.

The best-written female protagonist written by a man that I've ever encountered - that is, the one most fully-fleshed out beyond superficial plot contrivance, that has real emotions and motives, and constitutes a principal mover of the plot rather than playing second-fiddle to a man - is Mina Harker from Bram Stoker's Dracula. No fictional woman has been written by a man better than that; at least not while remaining a woman. There are plenty of "write a man, call it a woman" examples that are plenty fine and enjoyable, but they do not fully utilize or encapsulate the female mindset, they are "desexed" in a fashion, or else they are simply not the chief protagonist, such as Polgara in David Eddings' Belgariad who is no more protagonist than Morgan le Fay is in Malory, no matter how well-written she is.

However, pretty much every book I've read that was written by a female author where a man is the main character, has captured the maleness of his body and his worldview as well as any male author can. Of course, with the exception of Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, I've almost exclusively read books by -good- female authors, which is an astronomical stroke of good fortune.

My experience with Western novels is highly limited, owing to the fact that so many of them are series with 30+ entries like the Sacketts or whatever, so Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove series hasn't really entered my reading list until I've exhausted my backlog of SF/fantasy trilogies and quadrilogies. I've read a few Louis L'amour and William Johnstone novels, as well as the classics like the Virginian and O Pioneers, and the dimes like Zane Grey stuff. Hondo probably has the best-written female protagonist I've encountered, and I wouldn't dream of comparing Hondo to Dracula.

'Starfish' by Peter Watts.
Rating: 4/5.

This has been the quickest read of this length for me, 2 days for 310 pages, during the work week as well. I think that says something (I've been butting my head on Bertrand and philosophy and this book is *pretty* great).

The good:
A very unique setting
Interesting mental illness plot points
Interesting technology and machines

The bad:
A slow middle section of the book

This book almost became hyperion book 2 for me, in the sense it was almost taking too long to solve all the mysteries that I stopped fucking caring. But this book delivers.

It's definitely worth a read, it's actually good and I will be reading the next book.

In some places it's touching at greatness and in other places it is just fine to good. That's honestly impressive.

This book is better than 'a mote in God's eye', 'hyperion 2', and 'We'.

It's my first Peter Watts, any thoughts on him and the rest of the series?

I've slept it off and have more thoughts.

If you have read snowcrash and liked the ending, read this book.

The visuals of the 'rifters' lungs collapsing as their artifical lung fills with water along with all their other body modifications is awesome, although sometimes you forget and it feels like they are just in dive suits.

At times the weirdness/intrigue factor is cranked up and you are expecting some crazy twist but it never really gets that far fetched, the series stays pretty *grounded* in spite of being at the bottom of the ocean.

The middle section suffers from too much dialogue and character interaction with little result or change in story state.

Now spoilers
I thought surely any minute aliens would show up or something would come out of the rift and talk to them or they'd merge with it in some sort of hive mind, nothing like that happens sorta sadly but the direction with the RNA and smart gel is still cool and as a scientist I enjoy the more realistic in some senses twist Peter developed. At times the novel holds back on being too crazy and I think this hurts it sometimes, I want more abused creepy deep sea life and the like. You lose a lot of the claustrophobia and mystique of the deep sea by the middle of the book as there is no danger outside, the only danger is the rifters themselves. The mental illness abuse theme sort of is tacked on it feels at some points at at others it feels very deliberate and refreshing. I really enjoyed Fischer's story and his ending although I think I surely missed some smaller details of it. Also the ending where the contractors installed all the earthquake safe glass backwards is fucking hilarious and unexpected.

And I read this book because I saw it on a chart on the mega and its cover reminds me of system shock.

one of the main characters is a murderer who is put to death and then later resurrected through some mind-uploading technology or some other technological explanation. When he comes back to life he holds a press conference and tells the world that every human has a shadow self that lives behind the moon, and if you kill someone while alive and then you yourself eventually die, your shadow self is hurled into the sun. Zahler doesn't explore this idea any more in the book and all the other characters think the MC is a looney. yes. however, it's a huge missed opportunity, halfway through the book i was really liking it but then it changed course drastically. spoilers:

what i want is a first contact book where humans are the underdogs, and they eventually get crushed in the inmensity and vastness of space, full of incromprehensible and vastly superior life forms to us, like an ant is inferior to a man. killing star starts presenting humans like mice, pretty smart, pretty resilient, but overwhelmed by alien forces they can barely begin to understand. that should have been the core of the book. i wanted the different groups to keep getting smashed despite all their effords, without even getting to understand how or why they get smashed. that's what would happen in a real scenario where an advanced civ wants to destroy an early civ.

i think a book like this would be fantastic. where slowly but surely you see the underdog getting owned, keeping towards the reader that sense of inferiority, impotence and despair that no matter how hard they try, the playing field is too stacked against them, and they don't even understand the rules. that's a real dark forest scenario, not what's presented in the book.

the book is fine, i enjoyed it still, but it gives too much detail about the aliens and trivializes things, it also shoehorns too many explanations about what's happening, i guess the concept was novel at the time so the author felt he had to spell out everything but i didn't like it. also several concrete things i didn't like at all, the 2 characters letting themselves get abducted is completely retarded, i guess it's there so that we can see the aliens (which as i said it's by itself a huge mistake in my opinion), the star trek references are silly, etc. it's just a pity because it the book could have been so good man

>Of course, fairy-stories are not the only means of recovery, or prophylactic against loss. Humility is enough. And there is (especially for the humble) Mooreeffoc, or Chestertonian Fantasy. Mooreeffoc is a fantastic word, but it could be seen written up in every town in this land. It is Coffee-room, viewed from the inside through a glass door, as it was seen by Dickens on a dark London day; and it was used by Chesterton to denote the queerness of things that have become trite, when they are seen suddenly from a new angle. That kind of “fantasy” most people would allow to be wholesome enough; and it can never lack for material. But it has, I think, only a limited power; for the reason that recovery of freshness of vision is its only virtue.

Excerpts from something I read:

In 1936, anthropologist Ralph Linton said “the last thing a fish would ever notice would be water”. If fish were contemporary sff readers, the last thing they would notice is squeecore. Squeecore is the dominant literary movement in contemporary SFF; a movement so ubiquitous, it’s nearly invisible.

Squeecore tends to be uplifting and upbeat. There’s a weird, like, YA-ish, young-adult fiction tone to it, even when it’s supposed to be for adults. Characters feel weirdly young: they always think and act and feel like they’re in their late teens or early twenties.

"Squee” is a culture term for a sound or expression of excitement or enthusiasm. It’s a close kin to “amazeballs” and “epic sauce”. It represents a specific feeling, a type of frisson that readers value; the tingle of relatability as a beloved character does something cool, or says something “epic” and snarky. The essence of squee is wish fulfillment. Squeecore lives for the “hell yeah” moment; the “you go, girl” moment; the gushy feeling of victory by proxy.

It’s not enough to deconstruct something; they have to tell you “see? Look, I’m deconstructing it! See? See what I’m doing here? Do you get it? Do you get – you’re so smart. You’re so smart for enjoying this.”

There have been many, many response stories to The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. Most of these responses are terrible because they just take it as a surface-level plot, going “I’d rescue the kid!” The purpose is it’s a philosophical question to make you think about who you are, and what your values are, and who you are in society.

There’s the “stuck in the past”, there’s the “great influences are from TV and movies, and not from literature”. A lot of great genre writers like John Langan; if you’re reading The Fisherman, it’s clear that he fucking loves Moby-Dick. Tolkein read the old Icelandic sagas. There was this immense curiosity for the world and from older literature that goes in there, and now it’s lacking. There’s an intense refusal to look beyond a narrow group of canonical genre works, and the only way we’re going to look at it either is for cheap, lazy references, or to say “I defeated it! I won! I beat HP Lovecraft by writing a response story to him! I defeated a dead person! Hurray for me!”

A major feature of squeecore is treating the act of making or consuming squeecore fiction as a heroic political act.

There's an inability to see fiction any other way, except as reassurance, safety, and relatability. Things that are outside of that are suspicious and maybe contemptuous.

Squeecore disallows the unhappy ending; the disappointment; the rawness; the hopelessness; the truth that sometimes you never get what you want, and the discomfiting possibility that maybe you don’t deserve it. It disallows waste and relapse and pointlessness. It disallows a huge spectrum of the human experience.

>Those who disparage it often say "they wrote a man but called it a woman".
Man, writing good women characters is such a lost art form for western authors. She's either too womanly and basically only exists as a love interest or too manly and basically isn't even a woman. The average CGDCT protagonists have more endearing qualities and complexity than 95% of female characters that any sffg author writes. I guess there's also an idea that in the west, readers want to self insert as the protagonists (which is why westerners who watch CGDCT are commonly trannies) and in the East maybe it's more like you're hanging out with the characters instead of seeing yourself as them, at least as far as men watching female characters goes.

I read Gardens of the Moon recently but found it kind of confusing to follow maybe because of the cultural stuff Erikson throws around or if maybe I'm being swamped with too many characters but I found it kind of clunky in several places. I think you're right, the distinction between "I like these characters" vs "I want to be these characters" are further breaking down in the west too, which reduces the diversity of characters because the west now has a limited range of archetypes that people can relate to (usually some kind of anti-authoritarian, possibly genderqueer character thrust from their meek life, a coward but can also be really brave when they need to be!) rather than Japs making up interesting or eccentric characters you'd like to go on adventures with. In fact I think the latter actually has better self-insert value because you can imagine yourself for who you are hanging out with them rather than aligning yourself with some author's idea of a bland western one-size-fits-all insert character.

Pic related might be just 1 notch above slop but as far as female protagonists go, there is nothing on the west that compares. And this is just a random example I happened to have open. the East actually *tries* to do it. And does so without blatant feminist overtones.

Kek I thought my Piranesi post would get this response.
But while we're on the subject, the female cop in it has to be one of the worse examples of a modern, poorly written western female character, the part where the male cop questioning Piranesi's disappearance suddenly goes on this gushing tangent about how amazing, scary but thoughtful femalecop is is the most bizarre and cringe part of the entire book, especially when malecop has a lot of cause to take the interrogation seriously and believe that Piranesi might have killed a man who's just gone missing.
Admittedly all the characters in the book are pretty one dimensional and just there to serve a purpose, but femalecop and this one part in particular are just horrendously bad.

Dellia is fairly conventional portal fantasy, but the female lead is a fully-realized heroine in the sense of heroism and femininity. She's just not particularly unique.
Dun Lady's Jess/Changespell/Changespell Legacy is a radically unconventional portal fantasy that is completely deranged, considering the literary conceit involved is a completely animal animal becoming a completely human human and coming to grips with the thoughts and emotions and experiences that this two-legged, furless thing with fleshy tubes where her hooves should be containing her personhood now entails. - as well as falling desperately in love with her human rider, and yes they do have sex (not as a horse) regrettably
The Forgotten Beasts of Eld is effectively The King of Elfland's Daughter in reverse, except far more visceral and real despite the dreamlike language.

Any prog fantasy like picrel? No chink slop or lit-rpg stuff please. No isekai or gamelit either. So far I've read the cradle series, Sufficiently Advanced Magic, picrel, supreme magus (didn't finish it because it got too cringe for my comfort) and mage errant. My lit-rpg rule is kinda loose so long as it isn't too overt and doesn't have actual dnd stats all over the place. Cheers

Earlier novels were surprisingly decent because creators actually cared how they expanded the setting.

Let's not get carried away here. He may be a schizophrenic mass murderer but he's not so far gone to be a chinkposter.

I need to complain, guys. I need to vent.
I read most of alastair reynolds' revelation space stuff years ago, when it was fairly new. Then I find out he's come back to it, years later, and... fuck.

I know he can write complete shit, I read terminal world and hated it, but god damn inhibitor phase was terrible. Just a chase from macguffin to macguffin, while masturbating over his ageing author fav character. I am genuinely mad about how bad it was.

Because he was born to be chad, but he is raised as a country bumpkin where his adoptive father is a woodsman that fortune would have it, is one of the most dangerously skilled men of martial skill in the world. But Rand learns basic survival and village ettiquette, being thrust into the limelight where he meets people so far above his station he spills full italian dinners worth of pasta and spaghetti because he's a bumpkin. Then he has to develop further from the farm with voices in his head GET OUT OF MY HEAD LEWS, various factions wanting to use him or kill him.
If anything his bursts of competence and random wills to power in climactic moments instead of insanity and failure is outlier. *le swordfights in the sky with forsaken with muh HERON blade*

Rand is kino and when he starts to pull rank and put bitches in their place it's a great payoff.

You say that like revelation space wasnt complete shit. I read it after house of suns and was amazed the same man wrote both. Just how much worse is inhibitor phase?

>how much worse is it?
a lot worse. He goes back and fills in a bunch of mysteries and questions with bad answers, the plot is meant to happen after absolution gap's main plot but before the greenfly shit kicks off, and it basically just jumps from set piece to set piece chasing the item they need to get the next item to find the thing that can get them the other thing.
There's none of the "multiple plots happening in different places, waiting to crash together", there's no new worldbuilding, just explaining things that were fine being left unexplained, and then there's masturbating over Nevil Clavain who is, like palpatine, back somehow.

And then at the end they find a mysterious, physics-ruining mystery device that does something spooky to the inhibitors and that hurts to look at.

So it's not even anything fucking new

it's a couple hundred pages of shitty "hey 'member this event? I'm doing it again!" followed by "what if the hypometric weapon... but scarier!!"

I finished it but I wish I hadn't. All it did was make what came before worse by association or Authorial Headcanon.

Weirkey Chronicles is like the one remotely good prog fantasy series you have left
Changeling is also good but I'd give it like 2 years wait to build up chapters, calamitous bob by the same author is solid but has too many stat boxes for you
