At what point does a novel cross the line from being merely entertainment to being literary?

You know it when you see it.

That, and instead of using stock devices to elicit predictable emotions and pathos like a blockbuster film, it ventures into territories that are too personal or uncomfortable or plain weird to be entertainment. You may feel relief or catharsis but are just as often left unsatisfied and wondering. Prosody also plays a role, but I don't find it intrinsic to the kind of presentation involved.

I feel like you're using literary as a synonym for depth, so when you find real depth in a novel it becomes literary

In practice, when literary types praise it.
In my opinion, when there is some deeper truth about life you can get from it.
"Notes from the Underground", for example.

Forgot to answer the question. Something that isn't necessarily entertaining. Something that challenges the readers preconceived notions. Some literary works can start off as simple entertainment but with changing times and standards

Then you can make One Piece this because it can be reformatted as a series of scripts, which meet novel form (see DQ, MD, McCarthy), and due to One Piece's political concerns. Anime is great literature.

I mean, it definitely isn't entertaining, and it challenges social norms by sexualizing underage girls. I could see it being studied in a few centuries
