At what point does a novel cross the line from being merely entertainment to being literary?

You know it when you see it.

That, and instead of using stock devices to elicit predictable emotions and pathos like a blockbuster film, it ventures into territories that are too personal or uncomfortable or plain weird to be entertainment. You may feel relief or catharsis but are just as often left unsatisfied and wondering. Prosody also plays a role, but I don't find it intrinsic to the kind of presentation involved.

Forgot to answer the question. Something that isn't necessarily entertaining. Something that challenges the readers preconceived notions. Some literary works can start off as simple entertainment but with changing times and standards

Then you can make One Piece this because it can be reformatted as a series of scripts, which meet novel form (see DQ, MD, McCarthy), and due to One Piece's political concerns. Anime is great literature.
