As long as your desired aesthetic is something that you are really compelled by then I don't think there is (needs to be) a line between aesthetics and utility. If your aesthetic is something that's fake and your only chasing after because it's what someone else has done before you, and what you're really interested in is emulating that person's aesthetic then you will probably start to cut into utility.
