Hey /lit/ just read this for the first time. Is it just me, or is Kurt Vonnegut kind of a jerk?

Please, explain your thinking.

You probably just didn't get his deadpan sarcasm.

>> No.2321364

There just seems to be so much bitterness and defeatism lurking just underneath the surface of this book. The satire seems like just a thin way of him to mask his raging disgust with a sheen of sanctimonious, self-righteous moralizing. I've read breakfast of champions a couple of times, and kind of got the same vibe.

Hello, my friend! Welcome to satire!

ALL OF IT.

This is kind of how satire works.

Are you Fox News?

And he can come across as an asshole. You either find it hilarious or you don't.

If you think Vonnegut is a jerk, don't read Bukowski.

I would say moralising over the events of WWII is perfectly excusable. Everyone does it and should!

I would say it immediately comes across as fatalistic but it's hardly rage or disgust. Defeatism isn't characterised by protest but acceptance.

OP here. I always thought satire tried to ridicule the world for the purpose of of ultimately making it a better place. I don't see how vonnegut vomiting up hopelessness at every turn really achieves anything more than wallowing in misery.

nope

However the novel is of course anti-war. It's a protest in it's own way. I would hardly call that wallowing in misery

if every vonnegut hater is like you, then they're more irritating than the fans.

Pic sums up how I feel about Vonnegut's work.

Only analogy I can think of is snack food: I enjoy them but it never leaves me feeling satisfied or content when I finish - like: oh this is nice, oh wait I'm done, is that it?

Some misguided shit in this here thread. Thoughts on the movie? Saw it before the book when I was about 11. Ski masks are still haunting, though I only saw it once...
