Got this recently, took a peek, and guess I'll be reading it next.
>Last and First Men: A Story of the Near and Far Future is a "future history" science fiction novel written in 1930 by the British author Olaf Stapledon. A work of unprecedented scale in the genre, it describes the history of humanity from the present onwards across two billion years[1] and eighteen distinct human species, of which our own is the first. The book employs a narrative conceit that, under subtle inspiration, the novelist has unknowingly been dictated a channelled text from the last human species.

I read a book and didn't like it and now I'm here to rant

>Fourth Wing, by Rebecca Yarros

The book is marketed as a fantasy novel about dragonrider cadets going through brutal training to prepare for war. This is false advertising. It's actually a shitty romance novel with some dragons on the side. I'd say a solid 50% of the wordcount is spent on a love triangle (two guys fighting over the MC) and developing the MC's relationship with the one she eventually picks. The MC spends an obnoxiously long time going in circles: "OMG he's so hot... but he's 'bad for me' [he objectively isn't]... OMG..." This was almost resolved toward the end, but the last chapter or two has the MC angsting about how "I can't trust you any more because you kept secrets from me". Never mind that (1) she fully agrees that the thing he secretly did was the right thing to do, and (2) if the secret had gotten out, he would have been executed on the spot. So I guess this bullshit will carry on into the sequel.

The dragonrider school here is extremely brutal, and most cadets die before graduation. It's the same idea as Naomi Novik's Scholomance series, except there it's much better motivated: about half of all Scholomance students are eaten by demons before graduating, and wizard parents will literally fight wars for the privilege of sending their kids into this deathtrap because it's so much better than the alternative. In Fourth Wing, the Rider's Quadrant is extremely deadly supposedly to weed out the weak. But in practice, this mostly seems to involve cadets dying due to bad luck or other dumb reasons. One cadet snaps another's neck while sparring, after the instructor tells him to stop, and doesn't even get a slap on the wrist. I guess the other guy is "weak" for losing this one random sparring match and therefore deserves to die. The result is that the Quadrant kills off hundreds of the country's best and brightest every year because the people in charge are too stupid to realize that cadets who aren't cut out for dragon riding might still be useful somewhere else.

Rant continues

>Fourth Wing, by Rebecca Yarros

The dragons are okay, but don't get much in the way of character development. It's implied that dragons have their own relationships independent of humans, like when X dragon has a rivalry with Y dragon and won't shut up to his rider about how some upcoming contest, but this is never really explored.

The story is also inconsistent in its portrayal of how much dragons care about their riders. Dragons who lose a rider are usually devastated and refuse to take a new one for years or decades, but also, a common cause of death for cadets is that they fall off their dragon and the dragon just doesn't bother to catch them. The MC's dragon is ready to eviscerate anyone who looks at her funny starting from minute one, but on the other hand, when So-and-So gets too close to someone else's dragon and the dragon incinerates him on the spot, it's brushed off as nothing—"yep, this place sure is brutal." What does So-and-So's dragon think about this? Shouldn't he be swearing an eternal dragon vendetta, or at least have some kind of opinion on the matter? The story doesn't go into it at all.

The author does give some motivation for the dragons to bother with all this rider business: the dragons want to defend their nesting grounds, and made a deal with the surrounding human kingdom to supoort that. But this motivation seems a bit disconnected from the behavior of the dragons seen in the story. What exactly are the terms of this human/dragon treaty? Is there an anti-rider faction that has a different idea for defending the vale? I want to read about dragon politics, dammit. Also, it seems like thet humans should have bargained at some point to get the dragons to stop randomly killing cadets and just, you know, point out the ones they don't like so they can be thrown out of the school.

One last example of stupidity, just because it annoys me: a major conflict in the middle part of the book is the MC having trouble staying on her dragon without falling off. Somehow, in the 600 year history of dragonriding in this setting, nobody has thought to put a webbing on the dragon and strap themselves in like in Temeraire. They could even (gasp!) put a second person on the same dragon, who can help repel boarders, which are apparently a real concern.

I was expecting a new take on Dragonriders of Pern, and instead I got this shit. Therefore I am mad.

Oh, by the way, apparently this book is a mega best seller with 999 zillion copies and the sequel is too and Amazon bought the movie rights just 6 months after it came out (no joke).

It would be actually pretty interesting to read a more realistic take on the military academy genre where they just focus on turning out loads of 'good enough' grunts assuming they'll get trained up more on the job later.
Would also solve the problem of protagonists already being the best of the best by the time they leave school.

>Bêlit: Conan, do you fear the gods?

>Conan: I would not tread on their shadow. Some gods are strong to harm, others, to aid; at least so say their priests. Mitra of the Hyborians must be a strong god, because his people have builded their cities over the world. But even the Hyborians fear Set. And Bel, god of thieves a good god. When I was a thief in Zamora I learned of him.

>Bêlit: What of your own gods? I have never heard you call on them.

>Conan: Their chief is Crom. He dwells on a great mountain. What use to call on him? Little he cares if men live or die. Better to be silent than to call his attention to you; he will send you dooms, not fortune! He is grim and loveless, but at birth he breathes power to strive and slay into a man’s soul. What else shall men ask of the gods?

>Bêlit: But what of the worlds beyond the river of death?

>Conan: There is no hope here or hereafter in the cult of my people. In this world men struggle and suffer vainly, finding pleasure only in the bright madness of battle; dying, their souls enter a gray, misty realm of clouds and icy winds, to wander cheerlessly throughout eternity.

>Bêlit: Life, bad as it is, is better than such a destiny. What do you believe, Conan?

>Conan: I have known many gods. He who denies them is as blind as he who trusts them too deeply. I seek not beyond death. It may be the blackness averred by the Nemedian skeptics, or Crom’s realm of ice and cloud, or the snowy plans and vaulted hall of the Norheimer’s Valhalla. I know not, nor do I care. Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stringing wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when the blue blades flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being this, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and am content.

That usually only exists for the most popular of authors aside from fan efforts. So, no,i don't. Finding a listing of what an author has mostly done isn't difficult though. What’s the deal with magic in Vance’s Dying Earth? Why does it seem as though spells are forgotten upon use, only for wizards in later stories to turn string into fire with a word, and fling books into the sky instantly? Are wizards actually just people who use spells without actually understanding them?

The biggest takeaway from these stats is that I have highly questionable reading priorities that even I don't understand. Presented like this it makes it more comprehensible, if only because I don't think many consider everything they've read each time they read a new book, or even consider whether a pattern has formed.

For example, I read 126 authors, but I only read a single book from 72 (57%) of them. As to be expected, 98 (78%) were men. I'd read very few female authors before this. The one transman author is Yoon Ha Lee who wrote Ninefox Gambit. Some find an author and then proceed to read everything from them then move to another, or alternate with a few. Apparently I'm much more fickle than that. That raises the question, should I read more from less authors? The answer is that it doesn't matter to me so I probably won't in any intentional way.

I didn't intend for Sanderson to become my most read author, it's simply that I had only previously read Mistborn when it was first published, and he had become surprisingly popular in the intervening years. One thing led to another due to the discussions in the threads and I ended up reading a lot more than I expected. That's only because there's so many and they're so easy to read, if not that good overall. The same goes for Wight. Would if I had read Cradle if it weren't for its consistent promotion? I don't know. Would I have tried to have read any Alastair Reynolds novel again if it weren't for a specific /sffg/ member? I don't know, and I don't know why I felt the need to keep reading, and probably still will.

What I've rated highest goes to show how little I like a lot relative to everything I've read, which is rather disappointing. I'd prefer to have greatly enjoyed much more from many more authors, but it doesn't seem that'll ever be the case.

I've never paid much attention to publishers, though it's surprising to me how many publishers I seem to have only read a single book from. The top 10 there account for 68% of the books I read of the 78 publishers.

Lastly, the 49% of books chosen by me is a matter of definition. I included the entire series if I wasn't the one who entirely decided to read the first book. It seems the total number of books from that from all the contests, polls, requests, monthly books, thread recs, and much else added up over time. A lot of the worst books I read during this time came from doing this, but there were far more that made it very worthwhile. There were several /sffg/ Goodreads profiles and activity that I used for ideas of what I could read. Most of the time it failed and I dropped the book quickly, though that was because I was often picking stuff outside of what I'd normally read out of curiosity. It'd probably be best to focus on what I'd most likely enjoy, but I don't seem to be able to do that. In retrospect it would've been neat if I had listed why I had read each book that I did rather than only rarely having done so.

TL;DR: blog

If you guys are looking for something to scratch your Howard/Lovecraft itch, this book scratched mine.
>Anthony finds all his enemies again, one after the other. He even recognizes some whom he had altogether forgotten; before killing them he outrages them. He disembowels—he severs throats—he fells as in a slaughter house—he hales old men by the beard, crushes children, smites the wounded. And vengeance is taken upon luxury, those who do not know how to read tear up books; others smash and deface the statues, paintings, furniture, caskets,—a thousand dainty things the use of which they do not know, and which simply for that reason exasperate them. At intervals they pause, out of breath, in the work of destruction; then they recommence.
>The inhabitants moan in the courtyards where they have sought refuge. The women raise their tearful eyes and lift their naked arms to heaven. In hope of moving the Solitaries they embrace their knees; the men cast them off and fling them down, and the blood gushes to the ceilings, falls back upon the walls like sheets of rain, streams from the trunks of decapitated corpses, fills the aqueducts, forms huge red pools upon the ground.
>Anthony is up to his knees in it. He wades in it; he sucks up the bloodspray on his lips; he is thrilled with joy as he feels it upon his limbs, under his hair-tunic which is soaked through with it.

I also tend to get bogged down in realism and have trouble being what I’ll call ‘narratively confident’ meaning I’ll become preoccupied with formulating justifications for characters to engage in events which don’t even occur in real life. Yes, you are. You can buy the ebooks on there or pirate them. The physical are probably out of print, which may be related to the lawsuits the author filed against the publisher and likewise. No shit, that's pretty much a given. Physical copy was implied. I thought the lawsuits were dropped and the the new books have been released. Now you have a situation were you could bring in new readers, yet the books are not really available to get. It's basically just dumb business.

I went through the Hugo and Nebula nominations for best novel for the last decade or so, and of the 100-ish entries, over 90 of them are either written by a woman or a LGBT, or they're about a woman or an LGBT. All that Sad Puppies shit from 5-10 years ago isn't any better because most of those books suck ass.

Can somebody please recc me something written in the last 30 years that's as enjoyable as the original 6 Dune books were? I tried The Darkness That Comes Before but Kellhus is such a deeply unlikeable Redditor that I could barely make it through the book. I finished it, but I didn't exactly like it. Reading Book Of The New Sun right now and it's outstanding so far, but I already know I'll be done with the five books within the next week. Re-read Lord of Light, that was also sweet. Yeah the good ol’ Quentin Tarantino method. I think one of the largest barriers I need to get past is my obsession with ‘plausible realism’ which severely limits what you can really do in sci fi. I know it’s silly because many other formally trained scientists have been able to write absolute nonsense and make it good, like Asimov, but very often when I think of an idea I’ll aso automatically start thinking through why it wouldn’t ‘actually’ work and I lose confidence in following through with it. It’s silly because I do enjoy very soft sci fi like Star Trek, etc, but there seems to be a difference when it comes to putting my name on it.

Well I do the second one in my actual career, so doing the same thing but in a fictional setting seems superfluous. Let’s compare (what I consider) to be good sci fi to things like jazz or avant garde art. It’s the cliche of someone saying ‘it’s random and anyone can do it’ without knowing the that Picasso was a classically trained painter and jazz musicians could play in classics orchestras if they wanted to. You need to know the rules before you can choose how to selectively break them. I think it’s important to have an understanding of physics, so that when you write a story you can tweet just one or two things only in order to keep the rest of the unaltered world grounded.

I’d say it’s how to craft believable character motivations in a universe that is ‘mostly’ realistic and weave that into a plot that differs enough from simple mundane life so as to be evocative or entertaining for the reader. As an example, let’s assume that the speed of light is the hard limit even in this sci fi setting. In this case the amount of effort and resources that would go into colonizing another star system are so great that it’s difficult to come up with a motivation or impetus that does not feel contrived. Even if you did, things would take place over such vast distances and times that it becomes difficult to write the story from the perspectives of individual people in a narratively satisfying way.

That makes sense. When Tolkien refers to The World, is he talking about Arda or Eä? It is confusing me because Eä is also known as The Created World, but I understand it to be the material universe, as opposed to Arda which is a planet in which exist continents (such as Middle-Earth etc). I'm confused because The World, in my mind, means the place in which the story would take place.

I like characters that I find interesting. I like it when characters are competent and have desires that they try to fulfill. Eg House from House M.D.
I don't care much for character development these days. Character development often means that they take an interesting character and make them into a bumbling idiot in order to show character growth.
Sometimes an interesting story does take precedence over characters for me. Eg The Martian and The Hail Mary Project.
Most of the time I can read almost anything as long as I like something about the characters in the story. Chinese xianxia, harem novels, Japanese light novels, litrpgs etc. I just wish these stories weren't so muted in the characters fulfilling their desires or being so formulaic.

I've started with Elric of Melnibone and I'm enjoying it so far I'm reading it in this order: EOM>TSOTSOF>TWOTWW>TVT>TBOTBS>SB

Definitely dated in parts but I love how melodramatic it is

A few years ago some anon said that the Past Master is a very controversial book that wouldn't come out today. He must've beena schizo, but it's a really good book. I've also read his short storry collection, it was really funny.

>Swords Trilogy
If he's going to read Corum, I think he should at least end the story of the Vadhagh prince with the Silver Hand saga (which rules, btw). He'll be much better off reading these than the early Hawkmoon books.

That's only because you've far surpassed that level of schizo so it seems normal to you.

I read his 'best of' short story collection and was left really underwhelmed. I will still give his novels a go eventually, but so far I find him vastly overrated.

I liked book of the dead because it could have just as easily NOT been a litrpg. The autistic "game mechanics" was done infrequently enough and the author did a good job making them not so jarring. is this at all similar? It doesn't seem like it.

The premise is pretty good, but I feel the author got lost somewhere in the middle, and the new book will never come out because he can't figure out how to continue. I suspect that the whole cuck arc, and him going into the woods next to have sex with some sort of forest succubus, is the product of a bad breakup or reflection of some shit that happened in his life and made him lose his mind
