Just realised he was the same age as my Dad is now when Dance and the Got show were released. It's really been 13 years since release.
This shouldn't make people seethe. He's now he is in his mid 70s and is losing his friends, family and peers every year and the world is getting dark for him. It's tragic. He's trying to cover the main plot points to finish the book in spring, but he doesn't know how exactly to do that yet. So he starts writing and rewriting. Obviously writing the final book would be easier because a ton of loose ends are tied in winds. But the scope of the story got so big that it sucked the motivation out of GRRM. He will release it, eventually. Before S4 of HotD imo.

Sand Kings on the outer limits was some very early sci-fi for me as a small kid, and it came to me the other day and I looked it up to rewatch it. Found out it was written by George which shocked me, as a kid i was fasninated by the idea a normal guy being worshiped as a god by insects, reading the short story was a hoot, very very good. This has been my headcanon for a while with the end game I think it'd be really poetic if GRRM ended it in a bookend sort of way with a Stark and Targaryen alliance setting things right after one pretty much almost damaged the kingdom beyond repair.

About even for me I really liked a good chunk of Dance but largely the northern chapters and Victarion's the rest were mid to forgettable. Feast I think had far more interesting POVs like Brienne, Jaime, Cersei, Sam, Kingsmoot etc.

Part of me thinks one of the reason Davos is going to Skagos in search of Rickon is not only to get the child but to be offered as a sacrifice as payment for giving Rickon back to the mainland. Maybe Manderly cut a deal with the natives if he gave them a suitable sacrifice,and Davos just so happens to be that person who fits all the requirements. Can't shake the feeling that a lot of Davos's storyline in Winds seems to be inspired by The Wicker Man. He's essentially going to an island in search of a missing child who may or may not even be there with the power of a king(Stannis). He's just not a virgn, but maybe a fool.

Maybe they'll find out he's lowborn enough not to be sacrificed.

The Fist of the First Men wasn't actually from the First Men but was actually a sidhe mound. That's why the Night's Watch was attacked there. Martin straight up compared to the Others to the sidhe, who are beings from Irish mythology who were banished to the Otherworld by the Irish. The reason why all the families in Westeros are thousands of years old is because the family names were just categorizations for people who came from certain areas for blood sacrifice. So if you came from Winterfell you would be a Stark or Casterly Rock would be a Lannister or Casterly. This changed when the Andals invaded and established aristocratic houses based on these former regional names.
