can someone actually explain specifically what in Dune is based on the religion of Islam? Not muslims themselves or the aesthetics of muslims, but the religion itself?

There are some parallels: a figure coming from a humble beginning to unite a people in war (admittedly, Paul's humble beginning is only that he lost all power he had claim to, the Prophet, peace be upon him, could not read when he first received Quran).
The issue is whether one can be a 'messiah' without a divine origin.
Even Jesus, in Islam, was born of Allah's work though both Allah and Jesus state that Jesus is not a messiah, merely a righteous man.

Well, it depends on which branch you are. My folks are Iranian and (very loosely) Shia, so in their faith, they believe that the Mahdi, the 12th Imam, will come back one day with his buddy Jesus by his side, and together they help set up the final kingdom before Judgement Day. Fun fact, the 12th Imam is often referred to as the "hidden" Imam, which comes out in Arabic to be "al-Ghaib," which is a phrase this thread should probably recognize by now.
