Howard tells you early on what you're in for, anon, I know the introduction by heart:

>He was a man born out of his time; a strange blending of Puritan and Cavalier, with a touch of the ancient philosopher, and more than a touch of the pagan, though the last assertion would have shocked him unspeakably. An atavist of the days of blind chivalry he was, a knight errant in the somber clothes of the fanatic. A hunger in his soul drove him on and on, an urge to right all wrongs, protect all weaker things, avenge all crimes against right and justice

You're in for something pretty great. Howard is one of the better "Dark Romantic" writers. Pessimistic yet highly sentimental, masculine melodrama full of desperate, quixotic, and militant moods. Solomon Kane is by far my favorite of his heroes.

I wish the stories were more random episodes like Conan and not an overarching quest for vengeance against a random criminal.

Why does Germany have such a paltry literary tradition?
There's basically nothing until The Enlightenment and even after that, most of what they produced was Philosophy.
The Grimm Brothers, who only compiled stories, and Franz Kafka, who wasn't German, are probably the only German-language authors widely known outside of Germany.

He kills Le Loup in his first story though?

Honestly Howard's non-conan stories aren't as good, though several Solomon Kane stories are entertaining and I liked his horror stories particularly

Imagine the Witcher stories if they were actually written about Geralt and his hunts, and less about overarching political drama and the annoying child of fate nonsense. Then place it in 18th century Europe, and you have Solomon Kane.

I read 'Beyond the Black River' and its supposedlx one of the best Conan stories. It was actually not very good. People said that Howard sort of instinctively caputured prehistorical social orders and tribal existence, I didnt get any of that, it was one of the first truly lackluster recommendations I got on 4chan

My favourite thing I've read by Howard is The Shadow Kingdom, which is Kull, not Conan. I'd have to read the rest of the Kull stories to say whether I generally prefer Kull as a character, but I might.
