I just saw a translator mention like 40 people in the acknowledgments section. Then another translator just dedicating the translation "To my mom." The latter's translation was better.

First translator probably did it because he was a house translator and his publishing house said, "Translate this or you won't work again." The translator probably had never read the author before and probably had to consult with people who actually read the author and cared about his work. Hence the vast acknowledgements. It's a sad state of affairs. Translators for the major presses (nowadays) don't translate the author because they think readers need to read their work, or because they're passionate about the writer they translate. They do it because the file landed on their desk and their boss said, "Johnson, I expect a full report in the morning."
This is why publishing is now such a soulless industry. There's no passion. It's all profit and engagement.

I don't think this is just a problem of the publishing industry, but the society in general. Everything is about money. You need to sell a great part of your soul just to survive.
